Neisserial adhesin A (NadA) binds human Siglec-5 and Siglec-14 with high affinity and promotes bacterial adhesion/invasion.

Neisserial adhesin A (NadA) is a meningococcal surface protein included as recombinant antigen in 4CMenB, a protein-based vaccine able to induce protective immune responses against Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B (MenB). Although NadA is involved in the adhesion/invasion of epithelial cells and human myeloid cells, its function in meningococcal physiology is still poorly understood. To clarify the role played by NadA in the host-pathogen interaction, we sought to identify its cellular receptors. We screened a protein microarray encompassing 2,846 human and 297 mouse surface/secreted recombi

Impact of twelve immunization-preventable infectious diseases on population health using disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) in Spain.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study is to estimate the burden of selected immunization-preventable infectious diseases in Spain using the Burden of Communicable Diseases in Europe (BCoDE) methodology, as well as focusing on the national immunization programme and potential new inclusions. METHODS: The BCoDE methodology relies on an incidence and pathogen-based approach to calculate disease burden via disability-adjusted life year (DALY) estimates. It considers short and long-term sequelae associated to an infection via outcome trees. The BCoDE toolkit was used to populate those trees with

HPV vaccine behaviors and intentions among a diverse sample of women aged 27-45 years: implications for shared clinical decision-making.

BACKGROUND: The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices issued a shared clinical decision-making (SCDM) recommendation for HPV vaccination in persons aged 27-45. Since expanded eligibility for the vaccine was issued, little information has been available about HPV vaccine behaviors and intentions among women in this age group. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional online survey among women aged 27-45 years recruited through a Qualtrics™ respondent panel (N = 324) to answer the following questions (1) What is the prevalence of HPV vaccination among a diverse sample of adult women aged 2

The quality-adjusted life-years loss due to serogroup B invasive meningococcal disease in Spain.

INTRODUCTION: Despite its impact on a patient's life, there is a paucity of evidence on the humanistic burden of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) due to serogroup B (MenB) in Spain. This study estimates the total quality-adjusted life-year (QALY) loss due to MenB-IMD in Spain from a societal perspective. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A previously published incidence-based Excel tool adapted to the Spanish setting was used to estimate total QALY losses over a patient's lifetime horizon, including direct and indirect impact on patients and families/caregivers, respectively. A 3% discount rate was

Potential impact of replacing the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine with 15-valent or 20-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine in the 1 + 1 infant schedule in England: a modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Paediatric pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) programmes in England using seven-valent PCV (PCV7) in 2006 and 13-valent PCV (PCV13) in 2010 have reduced vaccine-type invasive pneumococcal disease, but the overall effect has been reduced by an increase in invasive pneumococcal disease due to non-vaccine serotypes and serotype 3. We developed pneumococcal transmission models to investigate the potential effect on invasive pneumococcal disease of higher valency PCVs covering an additional two (ie, 15-valent PCV [PCV15]) or seven serotypes (ie, 20-valent PCV [PCV20]) in England. Risk factors associated with meningitis outbreak in the Upper West Region of Ghana: A matched case-control study.

The Northern part of Ghana lies within the African meningitis belt and has historically been experiencing seasonal meningitis outbreaks. Despite the continuous meningitis outbreak in the region, the risk factors contributing to the occurrence of these outbreaks have not been clearly identified. This study, therefore, sought to describe the clinical characteristics and possible risk factors associated with meningitis outbreaks in the Upper West Region (UWR). A 1:2 matched case-control study was conducted in May-December 2021 to retrospectively investigate possible risk factors for meningitis ou

Preferences of US adolescents and parents for vaccination against invasive meningococcal disease.

BACKGROUND: Percentage uptake of some meningococcal vaccines is low in the US. Understanding what drives vaccination preferences may help to increase vaccination rates. OBJECTIVES: To determine how attributes of meningococcal vaccines and the availability of a pentavalent (MenABCWY) vaccine profile drive adolescents' and young people's (AYP's) willingness to be vaccinated and parents' and legal guardians' (PLG') willingness for their child to be vaccinated (WTV). To also explore how preferences for meningococcal vaccines vary by participant characteristics. METHODS: Vaccine preferences were

Effectiveness of a serogroup B meningococcal vaccine against gonorrhea: A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Outer membrane vesicle (OMV) meningococcal serogroup B (MenB) vaccines might be protective against gonorrhea. We evaluated the effectiveness of MenB-4C, an OMV MenB vaccine, against gonorrhea. METHODS: We identified gonococcal mono-infections, chlamydial mono-infections, and gonococcal/chlamydial co-infections among persons aged 15-30 years in the electronic health records of Kaiser Permanente Northern California during 2016-2021. We determined MenB-4C vaccination status (vaccinated [≥1 MenB-4C vaccine dose] or unvaccinated [MenB-4C vaccine naïve]) at each infection. We used log-b

Inequalities in the risk and prevention of invasive meningococcal disease in the United States - A systematic literature review.

Vaccination remains the most effective strategy to prevent invasive meningococcal disease (IMD), with MenACWY, MenB and MenABCWY recommended for adolescents/young adults in the United States (US). However, vaccination coverage remains suboptimal, which could be related to population inequalities. To understand the impact of IMD risk, prevention and control inequalities, a global systematic literature review (Medline, Embase, 2012-2022) was conducted on individual, socioeconomic, and environmental inequalities associated with IMD risk, prevention and control in all ages. Studies on IMD risk (n

[Recent evolution of the epidemiology and burden of invasive meningococal disease].

RECENT EVOLUTION OF THE EPIDEMIOLOGY AND BURDEN OF INVASIVE MENINGOCOCAL DISEASE. The landscape of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) has changed considerably since the COVID-19 pandemic. The number of cases has decreased significantly following the non-pharmaceutical interventions employed to counter the pandemic, but vaccination rates were also lower during the pandemic than pre-pandemic levels. Once the health restrictions were lifted, IMD rapidly rebounded, initially with a resurgence in adolescents/young adults, then in other age groups, reaching a higher number of cases in 2023 than in

Health Technology Assessment of Vaccines in Italy: History and Review of Applications.

Background/Objectives. Many vaccines have been developed in recent decades, and many more will be available in the future. When new safe and effective vaccines are available, decision-makers must extensively assess them before including them in the national immunization plan and issuing recommendations. The Health Technology Assessment (HTA) could be an objective, transparent, and comprehensive approach to guiding the decision-making process for the use of vaccines. Objectives and Methods. The aim of this study was to review the indications for HTA use contained in Italian institutional docume

Life After Invasive Meningococcal Disease: Insights from Survivors and Their Caregivers.

INTRODUCTION: Invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) has a low incidence but is a life-threatening illness that is preventable via vaccination. Even with treatment, up to 10-15% of cases are fatal, and many survivors may experience severe long-term sequelae. Building upon the acute-phase findings presented in the Part 1 manuscript for this study, we describe the long-term physical, social, psychological, and economic burden of IMD on US survivors and their caregivers in this Part 2 manuscript. METHODS: This was a novel, non-interventional, mixed-methods study among US survivors and their caregi
