BACKGROUND: In the United States (US), meningococcal serogroup B (MenB) vaccination is currently recommended under shared clinical decision-making for 16-23-year-olds to prevent invasive meningococcal disease; the MenB vaccine may be co-administered with other vaccines recommended for this age group.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of two US health insurance claims databases was conducted to estimate the proportion of commercially insured and Medicaid-insured 16-23-year-olds with potential missed opportunities for MenB vaccine series initiation via co-administration. Pot

Complement inhibition is a highly effective strategy for preventing relapse and disability accumulation in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD). Invasive infection with Neisseria meningitidis, the principal risk of complement inhibition, is largely mitigated by adequate vaccination. However, vaccination in the context of treatment sequencing from other immunosuppressive therapies, in particular rituximab, presents unique challenges. We present a 17-year-old woman with a severe NMOSD relapse despite B-cell depletion, who subsequently developed meningococcal sepsis after treatment with

BACKGROUND: Non-pharmaceutical interventions to mitigate the spread of SARS-CoV-2 were implemented across the United States in 2020. These public health measures might influence pneumococcal colonization in younger children and their subsequent risk of invasive pneumococcal disease. Our objective was to evaluate pneumococcal colonization rates in children ≤ 5 years of age with and without respiratory symptoms during the first 12 months of SARS-CoV-2 pandemic (April 2020 - March 2021).
STUDY DESIGN: This is a retrospective cross-sectional study evaluating pneumococcal colonization rates, densi

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: In France, non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) implemented to control COVID-19 led to a significant decline in invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) cases. However, a rebound in cases, particularly for serogroups W and Y, was observed after the gradual lifting of NPIs, raising questions about an "immunity gap" due to reduced circulation of the bacteria. During the study period, vaccination against MenC was mandatory from 2018, and vaccination against MenB has been recommended since 2022.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective seroepidemiological study using 166 normal

Neisseria meningitidis colonizes the human upper airway mucosa, which can progress into invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) upon breaching the epithelial barrier. Some serogroups and lineages are associated with IMD, whereas others rarely infect patients. Although multiple virulence factors have been described, it is unclear what makes some lineages hyperinvasive. Here, we examined meningococcal infection of air-to-liquid interface (ALI)-differentiated primary epithelial cells to assess host- and strain-dependent differences in colonization that could explain hyperinvasiveness. BACKGROUND: The incidence of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) increases rapidly with age. In the UK, adults aged 65 years are eligible for the 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPV23) as part of the national immunisation programme, and a 20-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV20) was recently licensed for adults. Residents of care homes for older adults have a higher risk of IPD and death than the general population. We estimated the potential effect of an additional dose of PPV23 or PCV20 for new residents entering older adult care homes.

Evaluating the persistence of antibody titers produced by quadrivalent meningococcal vaccines is crucial for determining the optimal timing for primary and booster doses. Using 3 - 7-year persistence data after a single priming dose of MenACYW-TT to fit a statistical model of antibody decay over time (10 years), this analysis modeled long-term antibody persistence for this vaccine in toddlers (12-23 months), adolescents/young adults (13-26 years), and older adults (≥ 56 years), comparing it with other vaccines (MCV4-TT, MenACWY-CRM, MPSV4). The statistical model is based on a Bayesian approach

BACKGROUND: A publicly funded 4CMenB program has been implemented in South Australia since 2018. We aimed to evaluate vaccine effectiveness (VE) and vaccine impact on invasive meningococcal B (MenB) disease and gonococcal infections 5 years after the program introduction.
METHODS: Vaccine impact was assessed using a Poisson or negative binomial regression model, and VE was estimated using both cohort screening and case-control methods. VE against the subsequent gonococcal infection was measured using a Cox regression model.
RESULTS: Relative reductions of 72.7% (95% confidence interval [CI],

Invasive meningococcal disease is associated with high fatality rates and disabling sequelae. The aims of this study were to describe the phenotypic and genotypic characteristics of invasive Neisseria meningitidis isolates in Argentina, determine the genomic population structure and evaluate the potential coverage of vaccines targeting N. meningitidis serogroup B (MenB). During the period 2015-2022, a total of 444 isolates of N. meningitidis causing invasive disease were assessed through laboratory surveillance; 344 isolates were available for whole genome sequencing characterization. In this article, we provide pediatric primary care providers (PCPs) with evidence-based recommendations to reduce the risk of life-threatening bacterial infections in pediatric patients with sickle cell disease (SCD). Standard practice guidelines for SCD comprehensive care are lacking in comparison to other chronic diseases. There is a need for continued advocacy for quality healthcare for patients with SCD, including updated standard-of-care guidelines. As a result of these concerning inequities, PCPs and specialty providers are forced to reference and compare recommendations across several d

BackgroundCOVID-19 pandemic-related disruptions in primary care caused delays in in-person well visits for patients that were age-eligible to receive recommended preventive healthcare services. Vaccine schedules impacted by disruptions led to delays in administration of human papillomavirus (HPV), tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis (Tdap), and quadrivalent meningococcal (MenACWY) vaccines, but some studies report inconsistent findings. Our study sought to characterize changes in HPV vaccination patterns during the COVID-19 pandemic by birth cohorts in South Central Pennsylvania, comp

OBJECTIVES: Collectively, the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages draw >30 million pilgrims to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) each year. Before Hajj 2024 (14 to 19 June), the meningococcal serogroup W ST-11 complex (W:cc11) Hajj-strain sublineage caused multiple international cases of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) associated with travel to the Middle East and Asia. Here we identify and characterise the strains responsible.
METHODS: All Hajj strain sublineage genomes on PubMLST.org underwent core genome MLST comparisons (PubMLST.org).
RESULTS: Isolates from 30 cases, across seven countries,

BACKGROUND: Meningococcal serogroup distribution evolves globally. In China, meningococcal polysaccharide vaccine (MPSV)-A is included in the National Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) for infants at 6 months of age, while meningococcal polysaccharide conjugate vaccines (MPCV)-AC/ACYW are classified as non-EPI (self-paid) vaccines administered starting at 3 months of age. This study aimed to investigate the knowledge, perception, and practice of meningococcal vaccines among healthcare practitioners (HCPs) at points of vaccination (POVs) and caregivers of infants aged 3-7 months.

Oropharyngeal carriage of Neisseria meningitidis (N.m.) is a prerequisite for invasive meningococcal disease. As such, genomic surveillance of disease-causing carriage strains can inform targeted public health responses. However, whole-genome sequencing (WGS) from isolates is often precluded due to the high rates of culture failure for N.m. samples collected in carriage studies. This study outlines an alternative method to sequence N.m. directly from oropharyngeal specimens that enables high-resolution molecular fine typing. We performed direct probe-capture enrichment WGS (dWGS) of N.m. on oro

Neisseria meningitidis (N. meningitidis) is an opportunistic pathogen that typically colonizes the mucosal surfaces of the nasopharynx. Under certain conditions, N. meningitidis can lead to invasive meningococcal disease (IMD). Nevertheless, whether invasive and non-invasive isolates of N. meningitidis exhibit distinct virulence characteristics remains unresolved. In this study, we investigated the differences in pathogenicity between non-invasive and invasive isolates with highly similar genomic information from an outbreak belonging to CC4821. The isolates were assessed for adhesion and inva

We report the case of a 15-year old boy admitted for febrile episodes lasting over 4 months without any other clinical signs. On the basis of a positive blood culture, chronic Neisseria meningitidis bacteremia, without associated meningitis, was highly suspected. Further work-up revealed no immunosuppression or terminal complement deficiency. A 7-day intravenous treatment of ceftriaxone resulted in complete recovery. This case highlights chronic Neisseria meningitidis as a rarely encountered pathology and describes an atypical presentation, compared with descriptions in the literature.

Disseminated gonococcal infection (DGI) is a rare complication of Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection. Eculizumab, a complement C5 inhibitor used in conditions such as paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria, increases the risk of invasive Neisseria spp. infections. Although previous reports have described DGI in eculizumab-treated patients, evidence involving individuals with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is limited, and all cases occurred weeks to months after treatment initiation. In the present case, the patient received a quadrivalent meningococcal vaccine before receiving eculiz

On 01 August 2025, the United Kingdom became the first country in the world to implement a targeted immunisation programme using a meningococcal vaccine (4CMenB) for protection against gonorrhoea. 4CMenB is a recombinant, protein-based vaccine licensed for prevention of serogroup B meningococcal disease but, because Neisseria meningitidis is genetically closely related to Neisseria gonorrhoeae, observational studies estimate that the vaccine also provides some (30-41%) protection against gonorrhoea. Given the rising incidence of gonorrhoea and increasing antimicrobial resistance, the UK progra

PURPOSE: Invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) is a rare but potentially fatal infection caused by Neisseria meningitidis. In adults requiring admission to intensive care unit (ICU), IMD typically presents with two distinct clinical presentations: neurological (meningitis) and hemodynamic (sepsis). These presentations are often conflated, despite the differences in pathophysiology and outcome.
METHODS: RETRO-MENINGO is a nationwide, multicentre, retrospective cohort study conducted in 102 French ICUs between January 1, 2016, and December 31, 2024. Adults (≥ 18 years) admitted to the ICU with a
