Psychiatric disorders, impulsivity and borderline personality in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine condition in women. Studies have shown that PCOS is associated with poor quality of life, anxiety, sadness, dissatisfaction with one's appearance, and sexual dysfunction. OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to determine whether a strong psycho-pathological personality is related to PCOS and whether this personality is related to the hyperandrogenic state. METHODS: Anthropometric, metabolic, hormonal, clinical, and psychological characteristics were examined in 90 Bahraini women with PCOS. After confirming the diagnosis of

Metformin use in prediabetes: A review of evidence and a focus on metabolic features among peri-menopausal women.

The prevalence of prediabetes has more than doubled over the past two decades. Although hormones associated with the menstrual cycle may offer some protection against diabetes by enhancing insulin sensitivity and suppressing gluconeogenesis, the prevalence of diabetes among women remains high at 10.5%. Notably, among the perimenopausal population, the prevalence catches up to-and even surpasses-that of men starting from the 70-74 age group, according to the 2021 International Diabetes Federation (IDF) report. This narrative review examines the benefits and potential risks of metformin across d

Human oocyte quality and reproductive health.

Declining female fertility is a health issue that has received broad global attention. Oocyte quality is the key limiting factor of female fertility, and key processes affecting oocyte quality involve the secretion of and response to hormones, ovarian function, oogenesis, oocyte maturation, and meiosis. However, compared with other species, the research and understanding of human oocyte quality and human reproductive health is limited. This review highlights our current understanding of the physiological factors and pathological factors related to human oocyte quality and discusses potential t

PREGNANCY DISORDERS AND MATERNAL CONSEQUENCES: Maternal pre-pregnancy risks and postpartum consequences of gestational diabetes.

IN BRIEF: Maternal morbidities both unmodifiable (genetics and prior history) and modifiable (insulin resistance and obesity) are associated with gestational diabetes. This review discusses common risk factors and postpartum consequences. ABSTRACT: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as glucose intolerance of varying severity with first recognition or onset during pregnancy. It can be caused by excess insulin resistance, a failure to augment insulin secretion in response to pregnancy, or both. The risk of developing GDM is affected by several

Obesity, ovarian GLUT4 expression, and reproductive dysfunction: Insights from Zucker fatty rat.

The impact of obesity on female reproductive health is considerable; despite the well-established association between nutritional status, obesity, and reproductive health, the mechanisms through which obesity impacts the reproductive axis remain poorly understood. For this reason, this study aims to investigate the expression of protein glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4) in the ovary and their association with morphophysiological alterations in the ovaries and uterus in a genetic obesity model, the Zucker fatty (fa/fa) rat. Various parameters were evaluated, including zoometric and metabolic measur

The role of anti-Müllerian hormone: insights into ovarian reserve, primary ovarian insufficiency, and menopause prediction.

This review highlights the role of Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) in ovarian insufficiency and as a predictor of menopause. AMH, produced by granulosa cells in growing follicles, is a key marker of ovarian reserve, reflecting the remaining pool of viable follicles. In cases of primary ovarian insufficiency (POI), AMH levels are significantly reduced, aiding in diagnosis and distinguishing POI from other causes of amenorrhea. AMH levels below 8 pmol/L have shown high sensitivity (85%) and specificity (100%) for diagnosing POI in women with secondary oligomenorrhea. Regarding ovarian aging, AMH de

Effect of 4-nitrophenol on the reproductive capacity of female mice.

Diesel exhaust particle-derived 4-nitrophenol (PNP) has been demonstrated to exhibit anti-androgenic and estrogenic effects, as well as the potential to disrupt the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis in male rats. Studies have also confirmed PNP's toxicity in various tissues; however, its harmful effects on the female reproductive system remain unclear. Therefore, this study investigated PNP's reproductive toxicity in female mice. While PNP exposure did not significantly affect body weight, it disrupted follicular development by altering ovarian homeostasis. A high level of apoptosis was obse

Not your mother's hormone therapy: Highly selective estrogen receptor beta agonists as next-generation therapies for menopausal symptom relief.

Although the menopausal transition causes a panoply of unpleasant and disruptive symptoms, many women are reluctant to use estrogen-based treatments due to risks of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and stroke. As we learn more about how estrogens regulate the cellular and circuit mechanisms underlying menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes and brain fog, drug development that specifically targets these mechanisms could provide the therapeutic benefits of estrogens without adverse health effects. This review discusses the rationale for targeting estrogen receptor beta (ERß) with highly selectiv

Enhanced maturation of mouse immature oocytes using a novel three-dimensional culture system.

The effective utilization of immature oocytes holds promise for improving conception rates in women with low ovarian reserve. The oocyte microenvironment, comprising the extracellular matrix and intercellular communication with somatic cells, is crucial for supporting oocyte maturation. This study hypothesizes that a three-dimensional (3D) culture system, constructed with hydrogels modified by laminin-mimetic peptides-a major component of the extracellular matrix-and granulosa cells (GCs) from mature mouse oocytes, can replicate the biomechanical microenvironment required for oocyte maturation

Impact of Body Fat Distribution and Insulin Sensitivity on In Vitro Fertilization Outcomes: A Prospective Observational Study.

Background: Since overweight is increasing worldwide, the interest in its potential impact on fertility treatment has increased. Whilst the body mass index (BMI)-based overweight classification is simple, BMI cannot measure body fat distribution. In this research, we aim to investigate whether waist circumference (WC) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) are better predictors of ovarian response in IVF cycles than BMI. Methods: This prospective observational study included 265 couples undergoing their first IVF/ICSI treatment. BMI, WC, WHR, and insulin sensitivity (measured with homeostatic model asse

Endocrine Disorder: Advance in Understanding Diabetes and Obesity A Review.

One of which is several endocrine abnormalities, which are associated with obesity due to changing the hypothalamic-pituitary hormone axis and include growth hormone insufficiency, hypothyroidism, and Cushing disease and hypogonadism. Apart from storing energy, adipose tissue is involved in numerous other critical functions that can be catalyzed by adipocytes secretion of hormones (i.e., adiponectin) and chemicals (i.e., leptin). In addition, polycystic ovarian syndrome is due to the hyperinsulinemia and contributes to Obesity, as hyperinsulinemia is the main cause of obesity, and the function
