A soluble membrane extract was prepared by a hypotonic extraction method from a cultured cell line, CKS, derived from serous cystadenocarcinoma of the ovary. The leukocyte migration inhibition assay in agar was used to determine the cell-mediated immune response with this extract in patients with ovarian carcinoma in comparison with patients with other benign or malignant tumors and normal healthy subjects. Indicine N-oxide is a pyrrolizidine alkaloid isolated from Heliotropium indicum, one of the widely used herbs in Ayurvedic medicine. Thirty-seven patients with solid tumors received the drug: 15 men and 22 women (mean age, 53 years). All had had prior chemotherapy, and 25 had had prior radiotherapy. Eighty-four percent had a performance status of 0-3 (Cancer and Leukemia Group B criteria). The drug was given as a short infusion over 15 minutes and repeated with a median interval of 4 weeks. Endometrial biopsy was used to study the luteal phase in patients with Fallopian ring (Yoon ring) tubal ligation. Luteal phase insufficiency was found in 9.3% of patients in the study group and in 3.4% of patients in the control group. THe differences are statistically not significant (p = 0.5). The patients with histological evidence of poor luteal phase after tubal ligation presented with oligomenorrhea and dysfunctional uterine bleeding. These results exclude the possibility of some interference with the utero-ovarian circulatory system caused by Fallopian rings.

A sensitive new method to assay bleomycin (BLM) metabolism was developed using an ion-paired, reverse-phase high-pressure liquid chromatography technique in conjunction with fluorescence detection that allowed levels of BLM less than 20 ng/ml to be detected. The initial diagnosis was based on any single serum follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) concentration of greater than 40 mIU/ml in karyotypically normal women under 35 years of age with irregular menses or amenorrhea. The influence of ovulatory dysfunction and timing of insemination on the success of AID with either fresh or cryopreserved semen was investigated. A total of 238 patients were inseminated, resulting in 170 pregnancies during 1201 insemination cycles, an average of 5.0 cycles per pregnancy. Pregnancy rates were similar in those patients receiving either fresh or cryopreserved semen, but the number of cycles required for pregnancy to occur was doubled in the latter group. A series of 252 patients with abnormalities of pubertal development are reported. Ovarian failure, followed by Rokitansky syndrome and then physiologic delay, are the most frequently encountered etiologies. Other etiologies are diverse and numerically less frequent. Ewes with permanent phyto-estrogenic infertility show oestrus less regularly than normal ewes, and the present study examines the extent to which this results from abnormal ovarian function.
