IntroductionVaccination has played a pivotal role in mitigating the burden of meningitis in the African meningitis belt. However, outbreaks have continued due to the emergence of new serogroups, and logistical barriers. This scoping review synthesizes published evidence on health impact of meningitis vaccine delivery strategies to guide policy and programmatic decision-making and maximize the impact of the new meningitis vaccines.MethodsThe review followed PRISMA extension for scoping reviews. Eligible studies published between 2004 and 2024 in English or with an English translation examining

Meningitis, an acute and life-threatening inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord caused primarily by bacterial, viral, fungal, or parasitic infections, remains a major global health challenge, causing significant morbidity and mortality, particularly among children and vulnerable populations. The Sri Lankan epidemiological unit reported approximately 1000-1500 meningitis cases annually. This review summarizes current knowledge on meningitis in Sri Lanka, drawing on global evidence and locally published studies to examine epidemiology, clinical presentation,

The article is devoted to important section of pediatric combustiology, i.e. generalized meningococcal infection characterized by severe course, high risk of disabling complications, life-threatening conditions and high mortality. Pathogenesis of disease is briefly described. Clinical examples demonstrate late diagnosis of meningococcal infection, problems in intensive care for septic shock. Methods for surgical restoration of damaged skin and underlying tissues following generalized meningococcal infection are substantiated. Indications and timing for amputation are defined.

BACKGROUND: Hajj is associated with an increased risk of invasive meningococcal disease, because of close contact among large numbers of pilgrims from diverse geographic regions.
AIM: To recommend evidence-based vaccination strategies for strengthening the prevention of invasive meningococcal disease during Hajj.
METHODS: We convened a panel of experts from 4 medical societies to review epidemiologic data, immunisation policies and other evidence on PubMed on meningococcal vaccines, including the quadrivalent conjugate vaccine against serogroups A, C, W and Y and meningococcal serogroup B va

MenACYW-TT, a quadrivalent meningococcal tetanus toxoid-conjugate vaccine, is approved for prevention of invasive meningococcal disease in infants ≥ 6 weeks of age in the USA. This Phase III study (NCT03673462; September 17, 2018 - March 16, 2023) evaluated the safety of MenACYW-TT compared with a licensed quadrivalent meningococcal oligosaccharide diphtheria CRM197-conjugate vaccine (MenACWY-CRM) when administered concomitantly with routine pediatric vaccines in healthy infants and toddlers in a four-dose series (3+1 schedule). Participants were randomized 3:1 to receive MenACYW-TT (Group 1;

Neisseria meningitidis is a bacterium that can cause high-mortality invasive infections. Asymptomatic carriage can serve as a source of infection. This study aimed to determine the meningococcal colonisation rate and risk factors for colonisation among children aged 1-6 years attending eight childcare institutions in three regions in the Northern part of Hungary. Oropharyngeal swab specimens were obtained from 180 children, and risk factors for carriage were assessed by questionnaires filled out by parents. qPCR was applied to detect meningococci and determine the serogroup. The meningococcal

INTRODUCTION: Routine meningococcal vaccination campaigns have substantially reduced the burden of invasive meningococcal disease in pediatric individuals, leading to relative increases in burden in older age groups. There is a need for safe, effective meningococcal vaccines that can be used across broad age ranges. MenACYW-TT, a quadrivalent tetanus-toxoid-conjugate meningococcal vaccine indicated for individuals aged ≥6 weeks, is one such option.
AREAS COVERED: This narrative review summarizes safety data from industry-sponsored pre- and post-licensure clinical trials of MenACYW-TT, includi

BACKGROUND: Invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) remains a critical threat during Hajj. Following a 2024 resurgence of travel-related IMD cases, assessing domestic adherence to mandatory quadrivalent (MenACWY) meningococcal vaccination has become a public health priority. While international compliance is high, data on domestic pilgrims who constitute 25-40% of the population remain limited.
AIM: To assess Meningococcal vaccine coverage and identify the sociodemographic determinants, motivators, and barriers among domestic pilgrims.
METHODS: We analyzed data from a large-scale cross-sectiona

BACKGROUND: Although meningococcal serogroup B (MenB) causes most invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) cases in United States (US) infants, MenB vaccination is not currently approved for this age group. This study sought to better understand US healthcare providers' (HCPs') views regarding IMD and a potential MenB vaccine for children ≤18 months old.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: An online survey was conducted in November 2024 among US board-certified HCPs who provided care to children ≤18 months old. Responses were analyzed descriptively.
RESULTS: Among N = 506 HCPs, 97.8% responded that, if

In the United States (US), the highest incidence of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) is among infants aged ≤ 1 year (y). While most IMD cases in US infants are caused by meningococcal serogroup B (MenB), there is no MenB vaccine approved or recommended for US children < 10 y. This study sought to understand general attitudes toward vaccination, knowledge of IMD, and MenB vaccine preferences among parents/caregivers of children ≤ 18 months. An online survey was conducted in November-December 2024 among US parents/caregivers of children ≤ 18 months. Survey responses were analyzed descriptive

SUMMARYAtypical pathogenic Neisseria infections, including disseminated gonococcal infection, primary meningococcal conjunctivitis, and urogenital meningococcal infection, are clinically important yet under-recognized syndromes that challenge traditional species-disease paradigms. The increasing use of whole-genome sequencing has revealed adaptive convergence within the Neisseria genus, providing new insights into the evolution, pathophysiology, and tissue tropism of these infections. This review aims to outline current epidemiological, clinical, and genomic evidence to define transmission, ri

BACKGROUND: Meningococcal meningitis (MM) cases are increasing in 2024. The infection spread widely during mass gatherings, including religious activities like Umrah. In 2023, the total number of Indonesia's Umrah pilgrims was 1.2 million people, much larger than the Hajj pilgrims (209.782 people). Thus, it is estimated that the number of meningococcus carriers also increased. Besides, there is no surveillance system for the Umrah pilgrimage to prevent Neisseria meningitidis from entering the country. The conducted study aimed to describe the proportion of meningococcal carriers among Indonesi

BACKGROUND: Facet joint tropism is asymmetry in orientation of the bilateral facets. Some studies have shown that tropism may increase the risk of disc degeneration and herniations, as well as degenerative spondylolisthesis (DS). It remains controversial whether tropism is a pre-existing developmental phenomena or secondary to progressive remodeling of the joint structure due to degenerative changes. As such, the following study addressed the occurrence of tropism of the lower lumbar spine (i.e. L3-S1) in a degenerative spondylolisthesis patient model.
METHODS: An international, multi-center

We describe a culture-confirmed case of severe meningococcaemia initially resembling severe leptospirosis, characterised by sepsis, purpura fulminans, meningitis and multiorgan failure. In a tropical setting where leptospirosis is endemic, overlapping clinical features might obscure diagnosis, particularly when facing uncertainty in rapid serological testing interpretation and atypical cerebrospinal fluid findings. Although the patient twice tested positive for rapid Leptospira IgM, blood culture ultimately confirmed Neisseria meningitidis Early administration of appropriate antibiotics and su

Atomoxetine (Strattera(R)) is a selective norepinephrine (noradrenaline) reuptake inhibitor that is not classified as a stimulant, and is indicated for use in patients with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Atomoxetine is effective and generally well tolerated. It is significantly more effective than placebo and standard current therapy and does not differ significantly from or is noninferior to immediate-release methylphenidate; however, it is significantly less effective than the extended-release methylphenidate formulation OROS(R) methylphenidate (hereafter referred to as osm

BACKGROUND: "Dry mouth" syndrome (chronic hyposalivation) can be caused by a number of pathophysiological conditions such as acute and chronic stress exposure, abnormal body weight (both too high and too low ones), eating disorders (such as anorexia nervosa), metabolic syndrome(s), Sjögren's and Sicca syndromes, drugs and head/neck radiotherapy application. In turn, the chronic hyposalivation as a suboptimal health condition significantly reduces quality of life, may indicate a systemic dehydration, provokes and contributes to a number of pathologies such as a strongly compromised protection o
