The occurrence of both autoimmune endocrinopathies and endocrinopathies caused by other reasons is called polyglandular autoimmune syndrome (PAS-syndrome). In a 34 years old man with weakness, weight loss and erectile dysfunction we found low cortisol caused by an autoimmune adrenalitis and low testosterone caused by a hypophysitis with impaired gonadotropin secretion. Thyroid autoantibodies and islet cell autoantibodies without any hormone deficiencies were further signs of a broad endocrine autoimmune syndrome. In the following 11 years the patient developed three autoimmune disorders: parad

Addison-Biermer's anaemia is an autoimmune disease. It may coexist with other auto-aggressive diseases, precede them or join the other existing autoimmune diseases. It most often accompanies the Hashimoto disease but also may coexist polyglandular autoimmune syndrome (PGA). Three types of PGA are distinguished: PGA1--Blizzard's Syndrome, PGA2--Schmidt's Syndrome, and PGA3. The latter, unlike the remaining ones, is characterized by normal function of adrenal glands. Addison-Biermer's anaemia occurrence may be often difficult to diagnose as coexisting illnesses might ouflage its clinical symptom

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune polyglandular syndromes (APS) are a series of disorders characterized by autoimmunity against two or more endocrine organs. Premature ovarian failure (POF) may also have an autoimmune origin and, when accompanied by other autoimmune endocrinopathies, may be part of the APSs. Onset of autoimmune ovarian failure usually occurs in childhood, adolescence, or adulthood, and as a result, fertility may be severely compromised.
CASE REPORT: A 26-year-old women with secondary amenorrhea, Addison's disease, and autoimmune hypothyroidism requested infertility evaluation. Examinati

Coeliac disease (CD) is a permanent intolerance to gluten that results in damage of the small intestinal mucosa, and it is one of the common causes of chronic malabsorption in children. It is well known that patients with CD are at great risk of malignant complications, but in patients with CD many other disorders have been recognized. Autoimmunity diseases, such as type 1 diabetes mellitus, thyroid diseases, and autoimmune polyglandular syndromes are known to be associated with CD, and they seem to be related to gluten exposure. Growth, bone metabolism, and fertility can be affected in patien

Addison's disease is due to an insufficiency of corticosuprarrenal hormones to maintain the peripheral needs and its clinical sign is a constitutional syndrome with cutaneous hyperpigmentation and low blood pre-assure. The ethiology has drastically variated in the last century; being the origin almost exclusively tuberculous at the beginning of 1900 and mainly autoimmune actually. Nowadays it is difficult to understand Addison's disease out of the context of autoimmune polyglandular syndromes in view of the frequent association to other endocrinopathies. The present article pretend to realize

As many as 5% of women may experience menopause at or before age 45 (POF). Four causes are known for POF: (1) Genetic. Clear-cut X chromosome deletions, particularly those in the critical region, result in truncation of reproductive lifespan. Creation of a central genetic data bank for women with POF may assist in defining the genetic contribution to this condition. (2) Autoimmune. POF coexists with virtually all of the permutations of the autoimmune polyglandular failure syndromes, most often in linkage with antithyroid and antiadrenal antibodies. (3) Iatrogenic. Iatrogenic POF results from r

The neonatal-thymectomy-induced mouse model of autoimmune oophoritis has two important similarities with human autoimmune oophoritis. First, in both cases there is some defect in the immune system that permits the development of organ-specific autoimmunity. Second, in both there is some ovarian target under attack. In neither case do we fully understand the nature of the immune defect or the ovarian target. Because of its strong analogy with the human disease, murine experimental postthymectomy autoimmune oophoritis may provide insight into the pathogenesis of autoimmune premature ovarian fail

A brief overview of the most important steps leading to our present knowledge of hypercorticism is given. The adrenals were described in 1563 and the pituitary had been known since Antiquity. Until Addison's description of adrenal insufficiency in 1855 virtually nothing was known of their function. Cushing in 1912 described his famous patient with hypercorticism but assumed it to be a polyglandular disorder. For almost 40 years the etiology was disputed, though Bauer early had postulated that hypercorticism ultimately reflected adrenal hyperfunction, either primarily or secondarily. Though Kra

A case of polyglandular autoimmune syndrome (PGA) in a 14-year-old boy presented is. The case syndromes included hyperthyreosis with a high titre of antithyreoglobulin and antimicrosomal antibodies and hypofunction of adrenal glands confirmed by the test with ACTH. The boy was admitted to the clinic in an average general condition. Marked insufficiency of the body mass in comparison to the height, many pigmented moles on the skin and features of thyroid hyperfunction confirmed by laboratory examinations were observed. Thyreostatic and b-blocker were applied for treatment. The boy was discharge

Autoimmunity is a well-established mechanism of premature ovarian failure and may be the dominant cause of reversible premature ovarian failure. Because of its strong analogy with the human disease, murine experimental post-thymectomy autoimmune oophoritis may provide insight into the pathogenesis of autoimmune premature ovarian failure in women and might open new avenues to specific diagnostic and therapeutic methods. We reviewed the literature on murine experimental post-thymectomy autoimmune oophoritis in order to compare and contrast it with human autoimmune premature ovarian failure, to w

Autoimmune polyglandular syndrome (APS) type I is a disorder that consists of three primary diseases: hypoparathyroidism (HPT), adrenocortical insufficiency (ACI) and chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis. Several other disorders may be associated. The diagnosis of APS type I was made in a 16-year-old patient with HPT, Hashimato's thyroiditis and ACI in our department. She has been observed for more than four years for other possible endocrine and non-endocrine disorders.

Autoimmune (lymphocytic) hypophysitis has emerged as a distinct and specific clinical and pathological disease entity. Although relatively rare compared with other autoimmune endocrine diseases, nearly a hundred cases have been described. The condition is much more common in females (9:1) and appears to have a particular predilection for the pregnant and postpartum states. The anterior pituitary, and less often the neurohypophysis, appear to be the target for inflammatory autoimmune destruction. During the evolution of the disease process, pituitary hyperfunction (usually hyperprolactinemia) h

Autoimmune oophoritis develops in some patients despite evidence of impaired cellular immunity. Here, using the murine postthymectomy model of autoimmune oophoritis, we investigate the hypothesis that neonatal thymectomy induces autoimmune oophoritis by disrupting the normal postnatal balance of T helper cell regulation. Stimulated CD4+ splenic lymphocytes from adult mice sham-operated as neonates produced the expected T helper type 1 (Th1) predominant response normally seen in adult mice (low levels of interleukin-4 and high levels of interferon gamma). In contrast, cells from adult mice thym

We extracted gammaglobulins from the serum of 10 patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) to investigate their effect on anterior pituitary hormone secretion using cultures of rat anterior pituitary cells. Three of the 10 patients also had the polyglandular autoimmune syndrome (PGA) type III with an isolated failure of anterior pituitary hormone secretion. The gammaglobulin from each of the 3 patients with PGA and an isolated failure of secretion of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) or gonadotropin inhibited the secretion of ACTH, TSH or gona

UNLABELLED: In a retrospective case finding study we collected data from patients with polyglandular autoimmune syndrome type II (PGAS Type II) who had been treated in our endocrine outpatient clinic between 1975 and 1989. 31 adult patients (25 females and 6 males) fulfilled the criteria for PGAS Type II (association of autoimmune endocrine disease with at least one other--usually endocrine--autoimmune disease or autoantibodies against another organ). Among these patients, 18 had hypothyroidism due to autoimmune thyroiditis, 8 were hyperthyroid (Graves' disease), and 4 had silent autoimmune th

A 21-year-old female with autoimmune polyglandular failure (APG) manifested by insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM), hypothyroidism and pernicious anaemia developed severe malabsorption due to exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. Supplemental pancreatic enzymes resulted in marked improvement of steatorrhea. There was also an incidental finding of gastric carcinoid tumour. We identified only 13 other patients in our institution with either type 2 or 3 APG, one of which had significant steatorrhoea. Another patient with IDDM, hypothyroidism and pernicious anaemia had an asymptomatic gastric

Autoimmune polyglandular syndromes originally defined by Blizzard, Maclaren and Neufeld were classified into three constellations based on the clinical clustering of the various component diseases. Type I and type II are reasonably well circumscribed entities with type III being an ill-defined group. The autoimmune nature of these diseases has been based on the presence of lymphocytic infiltration in the affected gland, organ specific autoantibodies in the serum, cellular immune defects and an association with the HLA DR/DQ genes or immune response genes. Autoantibodies to the various endocrin

The coexistence of Graves' disease and insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus is well known among autoimmune polyglandular syndromes and sustained by common underlying immune pathogenic factors. Hyperthyroidism itself may lead to impaired glucose tolerance in subjects with intact beta-cell function through various not well clarified mechanisms and treatment of thyroid hyperfunction, on the other side, generally ameliorates the degree of metabolic control when diabetes is pre- and/or coexisting. We report a case of Graves' disease associated with diabetes mellitus, in which a partial recovery of i

Three aspects of the possible relationships between adrenocortical function and mycoses are considered: a) abnormal steroid hormone concentrations that may favour onset and/or clinical course of mycotic diseases; b) presence of granulomas in the adrenal glands during systemic mycoses; c) effects of antifungal drugs on steroidogenesis. Glucocorticoids are potent inhibitors of T-lymphocyte proliferation, in that they affect both the production of IL-1 from monocytes/macrophages and IL-2 from activated T-lymphocytes. Consequently opportunistic fungal infections are frequently observed in patients

Autoimmune endocrinopathies belong to so-called organ specific autoimmune diseases. These diseases combine very often and from the polyglandular autoimmune endocrine syndrome (PAES), where autoantibodies either destroy or stimulate individual endocrine glands or hormone receptors in target tissues. Thus a wide range of combinations of hypofunctional or hyperfunctional clinical syndromes develops. PAES is a good natural model of endocrine polyautoaggressiveness. In its development the following aetiopathogenetic factors participate: 1. Hereditary familial disposition, expressed e.g. by certain
