Histopathologic changes in bovine fetuses after repeated reintroduction of a spirochete-like agent into pregnant heifers: association with epizootic bovine abortion.

A spirochete-like organism was found in the plasma of bovine fetuses affected with epizootic bovine abortion (EBA). The spirochete-like organism was frequently found in abattoir-collected fetuses as an inapparent infection, and EBA was found in cattle on foothill rangeland where the vector tick Ornithodorus coriaceus could repeatedly reintroduce the infectious agent into pregnant cattle (superinfection). Epizootic bovine abortion resembled a naturally acquired superinfection in circumstances where the agent was frequently present in the environment under conditions favoring transmission. There

Effect of short-term inhalation exposure to 1,3-butadiene on murine immune functions.

Interest in 1,3-butadiene (BD) as a potential immunomodulator was prompted by reports of an increased incidence of neoplasia in humans exposed to BD during the manufacture of styrene-butadiene synthetic rubber, and by a recent study which demonstrated a high incidence of thymic lymphomas in B6C3F1 mice. B6C3F1 mice were exposed to 1250 ppm BD by inhalation 6 hr per day, 5 days per week, for 6 or 12 weeks. Immune function assays were selected to evaluate specific humoral and cell-mediated immunity and spontaneous cytotoxicity; lymphoid organ histopathology was also evaluated. A slight decrease

Thymectomy in myasthenia with pure ocular symptoms.

Eighteen patients with exclusively ocular symptoms of myasthenia were thymectomised. Suspected thymoma, resistance to pyridostigmine therapy or relapse following immunosuppressive therapy were taken as indications for surgery. The mean preoperative observation period before operation was 40 months, and after operation was 26 months. There was no operative or postoperative morbidity or mortality. Histological thymic abnormalities were found in all patients (in one case, thymoma; in four, persistent thymus; in 13, thymic hyperplasia). The histological abnormalities were identical to those found

Role of the thymus in streptococcal cell wall-induced arthritis and hepatic granuloma formation. Comparative studies of pathology and cell wall distribution in athymic and euthymic rats.

Systemic administration of an aqueous suspension of group A streptococcal cell wall fragments to susceptible rats induces acute and chronic polyarthritis, as well as noncaseating hepatic granulomas. To gain insight into the role of the thymus in the pathogenesis of this experimental model, pathologic responses and cell wall tissue distribution were compared in congenitally athymic rats (rnu/rnu) and their euthymic littermates (NIH/rnu). Within 24 h, both rat strains developed acute arthritis, characterized by polymorphonuclear leukocytic exudate in the synovium and joint spaces. This acute pro

Thymic hyperplasia following successful chemotherapy. A report of two cases and review of the literature.

True thymic hyperplasia is rare in adults. The authors have encountered this entity in two patients who were deemed disease-free following combination chemotherapy for malignant disease. It cannot be assumed that the development of a mediastinal mass or its persistence following chemotherapy is due to recurrent or residual disease. The interrelationship between the immunosuppressive effects of neoplasia and chemotherapy with the resultant thymic overgrowth remains to be clarified.

Failing transcervical thymectomy in myasthenia gravis. An evaluation of transsternal re-exploration.

Twenty cases of failing transcervical thymectomy are reported. They were selected for transsternal re-exploration from a series of 95 patients who had previously undergone transcervical thymectomy because of myasthenia gravis (MG). A specific method for pre-operative detection of remnants of the non-tumorous thymic gland is lacking, but the applied clinical selection criteria were so far reliable: generalized, disabling, fluctuating MG despite cholinesterase inhibitor and/or immunosuppressive treatment, and no or inconsistent improvement after transcervical thymectomy. At transsternal re-explo

Immunologic studies in two patients with persistent lymphocytic thyroiditis, thyrotoxicosis, and low radioactive iodine uptake.

Two patients with persistent lymphocytic thyroiditis and thyrotoxicosis were studied. Both patients presented with severe hyperthyroidism of nine months' duration and had nontender, small thyroid glands. Uptake of radioactive iodine (131I) was consistently low. Serum thyroxine and triiodothyronine levels remained elevated without remission until thyroidectomy. The serum thyroglobulin level was normal, but testing for microsomal antibody gave weakly positive results in one case. Thyroglobulin and thyroid stimulatory antibodies were not found. The ratio of helper to suppressor T cells was elevat

Recurrence of thymic hyperplasia after thymectomy in myasthenia gravis. Its importance as a cause of failure of surgical treatment.

Persistence of symptoms in patients with myasthenia gravis who have undergone previous thymectomy has been attributed to thymus remnants. Patients with partial or no recovery were studied 40 +/- 31 months (mean +/- SD) after surgery, which had been carried out by the transcervical approach in 20 and trans-sternal approach in four. Lateral x-ray tomography of the mediastinum after injection of air showed images compatible with residual thymus gland in 18 patients (75 percent). Thirteen of these underwent reoperation by the trans-sternal approach, and thymic tissue was found in 11 (85 percent).

The thymus dependency of acquired resistance to Trichophyton mentagrophytes dermatophytosis in rats.

Congenitally athymic "nude" (RNU/RNU) rats and euthymic (+/RNU) rats were cutaneously inoculated with Trichophyton mentagrophytes. Dermatophytosis, as evidenced by erythema and scaling, was observed in both athymic and euthymic rats by day 7 postinfection. Macroscopic lesions in +/RNU rats became intensely erythematous (climax days 10-14), were limited in spread and alopecia (days 16-20), and healed with hair regrowth by day 35. In nude rats, however, erythema peaked early (days 8-10) and a persistent, mild erythema and scaling spread over the animals' backs. Viable T. mentagrophytes was cultu

[The significance of the 5th gland as a cause of primary hyperparathyroidism. Case report and review of the literature].

Of 140 patients surgically treated for primary hyperparathyroidism one patient had persistent hypercalcemia due to an abnormal and ectopic fifth parathyroid gland (0.7%). The possibility of an abnormal fifth gland as the cause of primary hyperparathyroidism should be considered when four glands of normal size and histology have been found in the neck, and of such a gland should be thought in all patients with diffuse hyperplasia after subtotal parathyroidectomy suffering from persistent hyperparathyroidism. The fifth gland is usually found in the lower neck or upper mediastinum, frequently wit

Effect of thymectomy on peripheral lymphocyte subsets in myasthenia gravis: selective effect on T-cells in patients with thymic atrophy.

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disease affecting nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. The clinical improvement that follows thymectomy in some myasthenic patients implicates thymic factors as well in the pathogenesis of MG. We have studied circulating immunoregulatory T cell subsets before and after thymectomy in 11 adult patients with MG. Six patients had thymic hyperplasia and five patients had atrophic thymus at the time of thymectomy. Before thymectomy, patients who subsequently were shown to have an atrophic thymus, had lower lymphocyte counts than either patients later shown to ha

Tree shrew (Tupaia) herpesviruses.

Five Tupaia herpesviruses have been isolated until now: four in our laboratory which were termed THV-2, 3, 4, and 5, whereas THV-1 has been isolated by Melnick and his colleagues. THV-2 was isolated from tumour cell culture of a high-grade malignant lymphoma of a Tupaia, THV-3 was released from a cell culture of another Tupaia lymphoma, THV-4 from a spleen tissue culture of a moribund animal with finely granulated liver cirrhosis, and THV-5 from cultured spleen cells of an apparently healthy tree shrew. THV-1 to 5 were efficiently propagated, plaque-purified and cloned on Tupaia embryonic fibr

BCG-induced changes in size of thymic cortex and thymus-dependent areas in spleen and lymph nodes of mice.

Significant changes in the size of thymic cortex and of thymus-dependent areas (TDA) in spleen and lymph nodes, were revealed by histomorphometry after intraperitoneal injection of BCG into young-adult BALB/c mice. Reactions of the thymic cortex were found to be biphasic with initial involution and subsequent hyperplasia. TDA in the spleen showed a transient involution with almost complete regeneration at the end of the experiment. The response of TDA in lymph nodes was characterized by pronounced and persistent hyperplasia. The functional significance of these BCG-induced changes of lymphoid

[Computer tomographic characteristics of space-occupying processes in the anterior mediastinum and their differential diagnosis (author's transl)].

Histological diagnosis of space-occupying lesions in the anterior mediastinum is rarely possible using conventional radiological diagnoses; computer tomography in our opinion often makes this possible. Our experience is based on 47 tumours which have been investigated histologically. In the anterior upper or middle mediastinum there were thymic tumours (thymona, thymus hyperplasia or persistence of the thymus), retrosternal thyroids, malignant lymphomas, teratoid cysts, one seminoma and one aneurysm. In the anterior inferior mediastinum, we found pericardial cysts, lipomas and one Morgagni her

Comparative study of the histologic reactions to intravenous injections of heat-killed Pseudomonas aeruginosa and of BCG.

Intravenous injection (i.v.) of heat-killed Pseudomonas aeruginosa in mice produced histologic changes in the thymic cortex, some of which resembled, while others differed from, those produced by i.v. injection of living BCG. The changes that were similar consisted of pyroninophilia of cortical lymphocytes and hyperplasia of epithelial cells in the medulla and at the corticomedullary junction with increased PAS positive cells and secretions. Major differences, however, in the sequence and nature of the histologic events were observed. Pseudomonas injections produced thymic epithelial cell hype

[The radiological evaluation of the abnormal thymus and its frequency in myasthenia gravis (author's transl)].

The radiological evaluation of the thymus is discussed and the results of 159 pneumomediastinums are described. Amongst these patients, 28.5% had a persistent thymus, 41.1% showed partial involution of the thymus, 22.5% showed total involution and in 7.9% a thymoma was found. Comparison of patients with myasthenia gravis with a group suffering from autoimmune diseases showed a similar incidence of abnormal thymuses. The value of radiology in assessing the need for thymectomy as a treatment is stressed.

Penicillamine-associated myasthenia gravis, antiacetylcholine receptor and antistriational antibodies.

Myasthenia gravis with thymic hyperplasia developed in a patient with Wilson's disease after eight years of penicillamine treatment. Four months prior to the onset of myasthenia, penicillin hypersensitivity was observed. Immunofluorescence on the excised thymus revealed immunoglobulin and complement deposition, but the myasthenia persisted after thymectomy and continuation of penicillamine therapy. Increased antiacetylcholine receptor antibody was demonstrable throughout. This patient subsequently became pregnant, enabling studies to be performed on the transplacental transfer of the immunoglo

Histologic reactions of the thymus, spleen, liver and lymph nodes to intravenous and subcutaneous BCG injections.

The tissue reactions of non-tumor-bearing F1 (DBA/2 X C57B16) mice to i.v. and s.c. injected BCG were studied in animals sacrificed at planned intervals following the injection. No appreciable changes were observed prior to day 6, when the thymic cortex and medulla began to show hyperplasia of epithelial cells; many of them had PAS positive cytoplasm and some of these cells were contiguous with the walls of small blood vessels and large cystic spaces containing PAS-positive secretions. The thymic cortical lymphocytes showed, on day 6, a pronounced pyroninophilia and increased mitotic activity

[Iniencephalus apertus. Report of a case (author's transl)].

A macro and microscopic study carried out on an iniencephalic fetus weighing 650 g. is reported. This fetus is especially interesting as it presents anencephaly, supporting the view of classifying together iniencephaly and anencephaly with retroflexion. The main malformations present were: supernumerary ectopical thymus, esophageal atresia with inferior T-E fistula (Type V of Ladd), pulmonary hypoplasia with accessory lung, transposition of the large vessels, rectal atresia, single kidney, persistence of the urogenital sinus and single umbilical artery. The possible etiopathogenic causes are d

The influence of thymic and bursal lymphoid systems in avian tuberculosis.

Intact and immunologically deficient chickens inoculated with M avium were examined for structural changes in the spleen, the tuberculin reactions and antibody formation. Intravenous inoculation caused miliary tuberculosis of spleen and liver but not brain; intracerebral inoculation caused massive lymphocytic tuberculosis meningitis with later spread to spleen and liver. Neonatal bursectomy and thymectomy did not significantly alter the disease in terms of survival and lesion structure. Cortisone induced earlier development of lesions. In spleen, bacilli were first seen 5 days after inoculation
