Phenolic acids from Anisopus mannii modulates phosphofructokinase 1 to improve glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes: A double-blind, randomized, clinical trial.

Phenolic acid-rich fraction from Anisopus mannii (PhAM) contains abundance of ferulic acid, gallic acid, protocatechuic acid, and syringic acid. Among other glycolytic enzymes, in vitro, PhAM counteracted the binding of sodium orthovanadate to phosphofructokinase 1 (PFK-1), improving its activities. In a rat model of diet-induced diabetes, PhAM monotherapy reduced HbA1c by an average of 0.63 % and fasting plasma glucose by 25 mg/dl. This herb rescued β-cells from streptozotocin-mediated destruction, thereby improving glycemic control. Supported by the preclinical trial, eighty-five patients wi

Towards a better registration of neuroendocrine neoplasms: The results of the Italian retrospective population-based study.

BACKGROUND: The increasing incidence, rapidly evolving classification, rarity and heterogeneity of neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) pose challenges to NEN registration including difficulty in distinguishing neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) and neuroendocrine tumours (NETs). Thus, in Italy a higher NEC incidence was reported. Focusing on gastroenteropancreatic (GEP) NEN, we aimed to review GEP NEN, and in particular cases of neuroendocrine carcinoma, not otherwise specified (NOS) and estimate the incidence of NEN, NET and NEC of the GEP.MethodsWe launched a pilot study examining cases of neuroendo

Perioperative Risks and Outcomes in Asian American Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and/or Metabolic Syndrome: a Systematic Scoping Review.

Asian Americans (AA) have an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) compared to non-Hispanic White Americans, yet over half of AA patients with T2DM are underdiagnosed or untreated. Surgical stress, known to exacerbate hyperglycemia in T2DM, is also associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Thus, AA patients may be at elevated risk of experiencing poor outcomes following surgery. This review aims to summarize the available literature on the perioperative (defined as before, during, and after surgery) risk and outcomes of T2DM in AA s

Postoperative nutritional support after pancreaticoduodenectomy in adults.

BACKGROUND: Resection of the head of the pancreas is most commonly done by a pancreaticoduodenectomy, known as a Whipple procedure. The most common indication for pancreaticoduodenectomy is malignancy, but can include benign tumours and chronic pancreatitis. Complete surgical resection, with negative margins, provides the best prospect of long-term survival. Pancreaticoduodenectomy involves specific and unique alterations to the digestive system and maintaining nutritional status (optimising outcomes and achieving resumption of a normal diet) in patients with cancer after major surgery is a ch

An integrated multi-omics biomarker approach using molecular profiling and microRNAs for evaluation of pancreatic cyst fluid.

BACKGROUND: Classification and risk stratification of pancreatic cysts are challenging because of limited radiographic and cytomorphologic features. Although molecular profiling has emerged as an ancillary test for pancreatic cyst fluid (PCF), additional high-sensitivity and -specificity biomarkers are still needed for improved classification. METHODS: In this study, PCF from 93 patients, including intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (n = 65), mucinous cystic neoplasms (n = 9), serous cystadenomas (n = 9), pancreatic cyst not otherwise specified (n = 8), and pseudocysts (n = 2), were eva

Fluoroscopy Time of Radiologist-Monitored Modified Barium Swallow Exams in Oncology: A 3-year Single Institution Retrospective Study.

Fluoroscopy time is an important metric for radiation safety, but how it is related to dysphagia severity as graded by Dynamic Grade of Swallowing Toxicity (DIGEST) criteria and other factors in oncology practice is undocumented. We evaluated the fluoroscopy time for the bolus protocol used at the originating institution of the DIGEST method and assessed the relationship between fluoroscopy time and DIGEST grade, exam indication, and additional parameters. Eleven trials, including specified VARIBAR® barium volumes, were included in the standard bolus protocol. Electronic health record (EHR) 20

Shedding light on eating disorders in adolescents with type 1 diabetes: insights and implications.

Eating disorders (EDs) are complex medical conditions that pose a considerable health burden for individuals with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). EDs in individuals with T1DM are linked to poor metabolic control, which heightens the risk of diabetes complications. Consequently, regular screening for EDs is essential. This study investigates the prevalence of EDs in adolescents with T1DM, investigating the associations with diabetes duration, pubertal stage, glycemic control, and diabetes-related complications. In this cross-sectional study, 350 adolescents (155 males, 195 females) with T1DM,
