To gain insights into the interrelationships among childhood undernutrition, the gut microbiota, and gut mucosal immune/barrier function, we purified bacterial strains targeted by immunoglobulin A (IgA) from the fecal microbiota of two cohorts of Malawian infants and children. A pattern of changes in the microbiome composition have been observed in the normal maturation of the human gut. Perturbations from this pattern have been described in malnourished humans and reproduced in animal models of severe malnutrition. Treatment and prevention of malnutrition in the future may be more effective if the interventions not only restore body composition, but the composition of the microbiome as well.

Objective. This study investigated the treatment outcomes and determinant factors likely to be associated with recovery rate. Methods. A retrospective chart review (RCR) was performed on 348 patients who were enrolled in the outpatient care (OPC) during the study period. Results. Of the 348 cases, 33.6% recovered (having MUAC ≥125 mm), 49.1% defaulted, and 11.5% transferred to other OPC units to continue with treatment. Although several cases of severe hypoalbuminemia resulting from rice milk have been described in the past, today the use of rice milk without nutritional counseling to treat eczema is still a continuing, poor practice. Bacillus rubiinfantis sp. nov. strain mt2(T) is the type strain of B. rubiinfantis sp. nov., isolated from the fecal flora of a child with kwashiorkor in Niger. Bacillus andreraoultii strain SIT1(T) (= CSUR P1162 = DSM 29078) is the type strain of B. andreraoultii sp. nov. This bacterium was isolated from the stool of a 2-year-old Nigerian boy with a severe form of kwashiorkor. Bacillus andreraoultii is an aerobic, Gram-positive rod. We describe here the features of this bacterium, together with the complete genome sequencing and annotation. The 4 092 130 bp long genome contains 3718 protein-coding and 116 RNA genes.
