Strain Marseille-P1302 was isolated from the stool of a 2-year-old Nigerian boy suffering from Kwashiorkor, a form of severe acute malnutrition. The strain grows in aerobic atmosphere and bacterial cells are Gram-positive cocci ranging in diameter from 0.8 to 1 μm. Among species with standing in nomenclature, strain Marseille-P1302 exhibited a highest 16S rRNA sequence similarity of 94.97% with Brevilactibacter flavus strain VG341T, but was phylogenetically-closest to Brevilactibacter sinopodophylli strains KCTC 33808T. The draft genome of strain Marseille-P1302 was 2,934,258-bp-long with a 70

BACKGROUND: Patients affected by poverty-related infectious diseases (PRDs) are disproportionally affected by malnutrition. To optimize treatment of patients affected by PRDs, we aimed to assess the influence of malnutrition associated with PRDs on drug pharmacokinetics, by way of a systematic review.
METHODS: A systematic review was performed on the effects of malnourishment on the pharmacokinetics of drugs to treat PRDs, including HIV, tuberculosis, malaria, and neglected tropical diseases.
RESULTS: In 21/29 PRD drugs included in this review, pharmacokinetics were affected by malnutrition.

Kwashiorkor syndrome is a form of severe protein-energy malnutrition characterized by protein deficiency and bilateral extremity swelling. Worldwide, most affected regions include Southeast Asia, South Africa and Central America; it is rare in developed countries such as the USA. We report a case of profound kwashiorkor in a 38-year-old male with an underlying psychiatric disorder and restricted diet who presented with extensive abdominal distention and systemic findings indicative of protein malnutrition.

Metabolic diseases are common worldwide and include diseases of overnutrition, such as obesity, or undernutrition, such as kwashiorkor. Both the immune system and the microbiota contribute to a variety of metabolic diseases; however, these two processes have largely been studied independently of one another in this context. The gastrointestinal system houses the greatest density of microbes but also houses one of the largest collections of immune molecules, especially Abs. The IgA isotype dominates the Ab landscape at mucosal sites, and a number of studies have demonstrated the importance of t

BACKGROUND: Undernourished children in low- and middle-income countries remain at elevated risk of death following hospital discharge, even when treated during hospitalisation using World Health Organisation recommended guidelines. The role of community health workers (CHWs) in supporting post-discharge recovery to improve outcomes has not been adequately explored.
METHODS: This paper draws on qualitative research conducted as part of the Childhood Acute Illnesses and Nutrition (CHAIN) Network in Bangladesh and Kenya. We interviewed family members of 64 acutely ill children admitted across fo

BACKGROUND: It is well documented that treatment for severe acute malnutrition (SAM) is effective. However, little is known about the long-term outcomes for children treated for SAM. We sought to trace former SAM patients 11 to 30 years after their discharge from hospital, and to describe their longer-term survival and their growth to adulthood.
METHODS: A total of 1,981 records of subjects admitted for SAM between 1988 and 2007 were taken from the archives of Lwiro hospital, in South Kivu, DRC. The median age on admission was 41 months. Between December 2017 and June 2018, we set about ident

BACKGROUND: Severe acute malnutrition (SAM) is a major cause of childhood mortality in resource-limited settings. The relationship between clinical factors and adherence to the 'WHO 10 Steps' and mortality in children with SAM is not fully understood.
METHODS: Data from an ongoing prospective observational cohort study assessing admission characteristics, management patterns and clinical outcome in children aged 6-36 months admitted to a tertiary hospital in Malawi from September 2018 to September 2019 were analysed. Data clerks independently collected data from patients' charts. Demographics

Michael Woodworth focuses on translational microbiome therapeutic research. In this mSphere of Influence article, he reflects on how "Gut microbiomes of Malawian twin pairs discordant for kwashiorkor" by Michelle Smith et al. (M. I. Smith, T. Yatsunenko, M. J. Manary, I. Trehan, et al., Science 339:548-554, 2013, https://doi.org/10.1126/science.1229000) made an impact on him by revealing the causal influence of microbial communities in the development of severe malnutrition.

Parents and caretakers are increasingly feeding infants and young children plant-based "milk" (PBM) alternatives to cow milk (CM). The US Food and Drug Administration currently defines "milk" and related milk products by the product source and the inherent nutrients provided by bovine milk. Substitution of a milk that does not provide a similar nutritional profile to CM can be deleterious to a child's nutritional status, growth, and development. Milk's contribution to the protein intake of young children is especially important. For almond or rice milk, an 8 oz serving provides only about 2% o

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Chronic amino acid (AA) deficiency, as in kwashiorkor, reduces the size of the pancreas through an effect on mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1). Because of the physiological importance of AAs and their role as a substrate, a stimulant of mTORC1, and protein synthesis, we studied the effect of acute protein and AA deficiency on the response to feeding.
METHODS: ICR/CD-1 mice were fasted overnight and refed for 2 hours with 4 different isocaloric diets: control (20% Prot); Protein-free (0% Prot); control (AA-based diet), and a leucine-free (No Leu). Protein synt

Acute malnutrition is a nutritional deficiency resulting from either inadequate energy or protein intake. Children with primary acute malnutrition are common in developing countries as a result of inadequate food supply caused by social, economic, and environmental factors. Secondary acute malnutrition is usually due to an underlying disease causing abnormal nutrient loss, increased energy expenditure, or decreased food intake. Acute malnutrition leads to biochemical changes based on metabolic, hormonal, and glucoregulatory mechanisms. Most children with primary acute malnutrition can be manag

Undernutrition remains a major public health concern, especially in developing countries. Despite being rich in resources, Malaysia is still home to children suffering from severe undernutrition. This paper presents the case of a 5-month-old boy with kwashiorkor stemming from improper weaning which was overlooked. This case highlights the importance of recognizing the early signs of kwashiorkor to allow for early referrals for proper management and prevent its possible complications.
