Determinants of Undernutrition among Children Admitted to a Pediatric Hospital in Port Sudan, Sudan.

Severe acute undernutrition (SAU) is still a crucial global health issue in the 0-59 months population, increasing the risk of mortality as well as of long-term consequences. In Sudan, 3.3 million children suffered from acute malnutrition between 2018 and 2019. This study was planned to evaluate, in the area of Port Sudan, the prevalence of acute undernutrition after the COVID-19 pandemic and to identify the most important factors favoring the development of acute undernutrition. The available clinical records of all the under-five children (n = 1012) admitted to the Port Sudan Emergency Pedia

Profile of Children with Undernutrition Admitted in Two Secondary-Level Hospitals in Maputo City, Mozambique.

Mozambique has one of the highest child undernutrition rates in Sub-Saharan Africa. The aim of this study was to characterize the profile of children from 1 to 14 years old hospitalized for undernutrition and to explore associated risk factors. Clinical, demographic, socioeconomic, and environmental data were collected. Anthropometric measurements and stool samples were collected from a child and their caretaker. The wealth index was determined using Principal Components Analysis. A total of 449 children and their caretakers were enrolled. The children had a median age of 1.0 year [IQR: 1.0-2.

Dermatological changes in a prospective cohort of acutely ill, hospitalised Malawian children, stratified according to nutritional status.

RATIONALE: Since the first documentation of skin changes in malnutrition in the early 18th century, various hair and skin changes have been reported in severely malnourished children globally. We aimed to describe the frequency and types of skin conditions in children admitted with acute illness to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, Blantyre, Malawi across a spectrum of nutritional status and validate an existing skin assessment tool. METHODS: Children between 1 week and 23 months of age with acute illness were enrolled and stratified by anthropometry. Standardised photographs were taken, and

Epidemiology and clinical characteristics of acute malnutrition among under-5 children attending a rural hospital in the Democratic Republic of Congo: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition, a public health problem in a low-income country such as the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo), is a major killer among children under 5 who are most at risk of acute malnutrition. This study aims to describe the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of acute malnutrition in children under 5 years old. METHODS: The authors conducted a retrospective and descriptive cross-sectional study on children under 5 with acute malnutrition from April 2022 to April 2023. A total of 287 malnourished children were consulted, hospitalized in a rural hospital, and regist

Behind the Protein Battle Lines in the 1970s: Nutritional Turmoil in the Postwar World.

This study examines the development of international debates about the perception of nutrients, particularly protein, with a focus on the "Protein Debate" of the late 20th century. The nutritional obsession with protein has been ongoing since the early 19th century, when scientific nutrition was established, and has been at the center of debates surrounding food, agriculture, healthcare, and the environment, changing in shape and form over time. In addition to being a nutrient necessary for optimal physical and mental performance, protein has been a marker of poverty and discrimination at the

Measuring Food Insecurity in Children under 5 Years of Age with Acute Undernutrition in Valle Del Cauca-Colombia.

UNLABELLED: Malnutrition is a global problem that affects all countries in one or more of its forms, representing one of the greatest challenges worldwide. One of the key contributing factors is food insecurity, which must be evaluated in children with moderate and severe acute malnutrition, as they are at imminent risk of death. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to assess food insecurity among children under 5 years old with moderate, and severe malnutrition from Valle del Cauca, a state located in the southwestern region of Colombia. METHODS: A descriptive observational study was conducted, inc

Kwashiorkor and sarcopenic obesity: Two Sides Of The Same Coin?

Kwashiorkor is a form of protein energy malnutrition, while obesity usually occurs due to overnutrition. These syndromes, therefore, are considered to be poles apart. However, there are many similarities between the two conditions. Both are forms of malnutrition, and have common features in causation, clinical presentation, comorbidities and complications, as well as strategies for management. In this review, we discuss whether kwashiorkor and obesity, especially sarcopenic obesity, are two sides of the same coin or not.

Prediction of inpatient mortality in hospitalised children in low- and middle-income countries: An external validation of paediatric mortality risk scores.

BACKGROUND: Risk prediction tools for acutely ill children have been developed in high- and low-income settings, but few are validated or incorporated into clinical guidelines. We aimed to assess the performance of existing paediatric early warning scores for use in low- and middle-income countries using clinical data from a recent large multi-country study in Africa and South-Asia. METHODS: We used data (children across three nutritional strata) from the Childhood Acute Illness and Nutrition (CHAIN) Network cohort study (n = 3101). We assessed 10 scores where similar predictor variables were

Trends in severe acute malnutrition admissions, characteristics, and treatment outcomes in Malawi from 2011 through 2019.

BACKGROUND: Community-based Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) has been successfully implemented across Malawi, yet trends in admissions, characteristics, and treatment outcomes in children with severe acute malnutrition (SAM) have not been examined. The objective was therefore to investigate trends in admissions, characteristics including percentage of children with SAM with HIV and oedema, and treatment outcomes across the decade following implementation of CMAM. METHODS: This research involved a retrospective analysis of existing data routinely collected across Malawi by the Ministry

Malnutrition stratified by marasmus and kwashiorkor in adult patients with heart failure.

Malnutrition is classified into marasmus and kwashiorkor in children. However, the clinical significance of these aspects is unclear in adult patients with heart failure (HF). We divided 2308 adult patients with HF into four groups according to marasmus type (body mass index < 18.5 kg/m2) and kwashiorkor type (serum albumin < 3.4 g/dL) malnutrition: Group C (no malnutrition, n = 1511, 65.5%), Group M (marasmus type malnutrition, n = 133, 5.8%), Group K (kwashiorkor type malnutrition, n = 554, 24.0%) and Group MK (marasmic-kwashiorkor type malnutrition, n = 110, 4.8%). Group M showed the lowest

Longitudinal Evaluation of Developmental Protein Malnutrition Resembling Marasmic-Kwashiorkor Condition in Wistar Rats.

OBJECTIVES: Protein malnutrition (PMN) is a significant public health concern that can aggravate pathological states. The impact of early malnutrition on metabolism needs extensive evaluation. Current models employ short-term diet restriction and are neither ethically correct nor clinically relevant. This study aimed to develop a PMN rat model to evaluate the effects of a low-protein diet (LPD) on physiological, hematological, biochemical, and histological changes affected by malnourishment from postweaning to the 40th week. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The PMN model was developed in Wistar rats (p

The Spectrum of Pathogens Associated with Infections in African Children with Severe Acute Malnutrition: A Scoping Review.

Understanding the interplay between infections and severe acute malnutrition is critical in attaining good clinical outcomes when managing malnourished children. However, review studies describing the profile of the associated pathogens in the malnourished African paediatric population are sparse in the literature. We aimed to identify the spectrum of pathogens from studies reporting infections in severely malnourished African children, as well as the antibiotic resistance pattern and clinical outcomes. A systematic literature review of the PubMed database was conducted following PRISMA guidel

Case report: Cystic fibrosis with kwashiorkor: A rare presentation in the era of universal newborn screening.

BACKGROUND: Universal newborn screening changed the way medical providers think about the presentation of cystic fibrosis (CF). Before implementation of universal screening, it was common for children with CF to present with failure to thrive, nutritional deficiencies, and recurrent infections. Now, nearly all cases of CF are diagnosed by newborn screening shortly after birth before significant symptoms develop. Therefore, providers often do not consider this illness in the setting of a normal newborn screen. Newborn screening significantly decreases the risk of complications in early childhoo

Kwashiorkor after gastric bypass.

Gastric bypass has grown in popularity in recent years due to its high efficacy in achieving long-term weight loss in patients with morbid obesity. Gastric bypass has been described to further exacerbate baseline nutritional deficiencies due to reduced gastric capacity and malabsorption. In rare cases, when protein deficiency is severe, Kwashiorkor disease may arise. The incidence of Kwashiorkor specifically following gastric bypass is rare, with an incidence of 4.7%. We report a case of a female patient who underwent a gastric bypass and subsequently developed Kwashiorkor. Physicians' suspici
