A study of some changes of cell-mediated immunity in protein energy malnutrition.

This work was done to assess both monocytic and lymphocytic functions and to identify their role in the altered immunocompetence in protein energy malnutrition (PEM). This was accomplished through the evaluation of the phagocytic function and the in vitro production of interleukin 1 and interleukin 2 (IL-1 and IL-2) from cultured mononuclear cells. Forty patients with PEM within the age of (5-20 months) and twenty normal healthy subjects of matched age and sex were studied. They were subjected to complete blood picture, total serum protein, serum albumin, C3, C4, monocyte phagocytic function a

Mortality in severe protein-energy malnutrition at Nchelenge, Zambia.

At St Paul's Hospital, Nchelenge district, north-eastern Zambia, routine clinical management of 299 children up to 5 years of age with severe and/or complicated protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) was monitored and predictors of outcome analysed. PEM was typed according to a modified Wellcome classification. Overall mortality was 25.8 per cent with 13.4 per cent for kwashiorkor, 17.8 per cent for marasmus, 28.0 per cent for marasmic kwashiorkor, and 48.3 per cent for untyped cases of PEM. Mortality up to 18 months of age was related to the presence of dehydration, pneumonia or another infectious

Protein-energy malnutrition in urban children: prevalence and determinants.

Between February and April 1995, 669 under-five children living in Jimma town were randomly selected and had their nutritional status assessed. Risk factors for protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) were also studied. About half (48%) of the children were found to be malnourished. The prevalence of underweight, wasting and stunting were 36%, 9% and 36%, respectively. Severe protein-energy malnutrition, i.e., marasmus, kwashiorkor and marasmic-kwashiorkor, was detected in 2%. The prevalence of malnutrition was lowest in infants. While underweight and wasting peaked by the second and third years of

Assessment of plasma fibronectin in malnourished Nigerian children.

BACKGROUND: Severe malnutrition is associated with septic infections. The concentrations of fibronectin, albumin, and transferrin in plasma were measured in three groups of children with protein-energy malnutrition, aged 1-3 years, each group comprising 20 children. The aim of which was to test whether plasma fibronectin, being an opsonic protein, was reduced in such children, and if it was a useful index for assessing the severity of malnutrition. METHODS: The concentrations of fibronectin, albumin, and transferrin in plasma were studied by enzyme immunoassay/ immunoblotting, spectrophotomet

Whole-body protein kinetics in children with kwashiorkor and infection: a comparison of egg white and milk as dietary sources of protein.

This study tested the hypothesis that during treatment of kwashiorkor (including marasmic kwashiorkor) with infection there is a lower rate of amino acid oxidation when the dietary intake of amino acids resembles the amino acid composition of acute phase proteins (APPs). Twenty-two children in Blantyre, Malawi, with kwashiorkor and acute infection were fed an isoenergetic, isonitrogenous diet with either egg white or milk as a protein source. The whole-body amino acid oxidation rate was measured after 24 h by determining the plasma urea rate of appearance, and whole-body protein breakdown and

Trends in admission and case fatality for acute malnutrition (Kingston 1982-1991).

The case fatality ratio (CFR) in acute protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) achieved in the Tropical Metabolism Research Unit (TMRU) was compared with that of other tertiary care facilities in Kingston. Trends in admission and fatality rates, case severity and complications were also examined. From ward admission registers for Bustamante Hospital for Children (BHC), the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI), children's wards and the TMRU all cases of PEM admitted from 1982 through 1991 were enumerated and there was a docket search for random subsamples. Ten-year mean CFR% for BHC was 8.8

Urinary tract infection in malnourished rural African children.

During an 8-month period from 1 September 1992 to 30 April 1993, 134 children less than 5 years of age admitted with all grades of malnutrition to a rural hospital were investigated for urinary tract infection. Thirty-five (26.1%) had proven infection. Incidence rates amongst malnutrition categories did not vary significantly. Antibiotic sensitivities with reference to ongoing surveillance and antimicrobial usage is discussed. The value of dipstick screening tests was analysed for predictability and found to be an unreliable alternative to traditional culture techniques. This study emphasizes

Glyoxalase I activity in erythrocytes from severely malnourished children.

The enzyme glyoxalase I (Glyox I) is involved in metabolic detoxification, and requires glutathione (GSH) as a cofactor. Given the low concentration of whole blood GSH in children with oedematous malnutrition, it is possible that the function of this pathway may be compromised in these children. Glyox I activity was therefore assayed in erythrocytes taken from 133 severely malnourished children and 21 age-matched controls. The mean values (+/- SEM) for the marasmic group (Marasmus: 105 +/- 4/u/gm Hb) and the group with kwashiorkor (Kwash: 103 +/- 4/u/gm Hb) were not significantly different fro
