BACKGROUND: Group B Streptococcus (GBS) colonization is one of the major causes of severe neonatal infections. The study was intended to identify GBS colonization in pregnant women, explore its potential risk factors, and analyze the impact of GBS on outcomes for both mothers and newborns.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective research was carried out on pregnant women who had undergone GBS screening and delivered from June 2020 to December 2022. Pregnant women between 35 and 37 weeks of gestation had GBS screening using real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The clinical characteristi

This review summarizes key virulence factors associated with group B Streptococcus (GBS), a significant pathogen particularly affecting pregnant women, fetuses, and infants. Beginning with an introduction to the historical transition of GBS from a zoonotic pathogen to a prominent cause of human infections, particularly in the perinatal period, the review describes major disease manifestations caused by GBS, including sepsis, meningitis, chorioamnionitis, pneumonia, and others, linking each to specific virulence mechanisms. A detailed exploration of the genetic basis for GBS pathogenicity follo

Group B Streptococcus (GBS; Streptococcus agalactiae) is a gram-positive colonizer of the healthy intestinal and genitourinary microbiota. During and shortly after birth, neonates and infants can be opportunistically infected leading to sepsis, pneumonia, or meningitis among other illnesses. GBS is the leading cause of neonatal meningitis globally, and while prophylactic treatments have been successful for reducing early-onset disease, no decrease in the incidence of late-onset disease has occurred and no vaccine is currently available. In this review, we describe GBS both from a clinical and

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B Streptococcus, GBS) is a leading cause of neonatal sepsis in high-income countries. While intrapartum antibiotic screening reduces this risk, increasing resistance to macrolides and lincosamides in Europe since the 1990s has limited therapeutic options for penicillin-allergic patients. Reports of reduced beta-lactam susceptibility in GBS further emphasise the need for robust antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance. However, broth microdilution (BMD) methods are unsuitable for large-scale antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST).

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a Gram-positive pathobiont that commonly colonizes the gastrointestinal and lower female genital tracts but can cause sepsis and pneumonia in newborns and is a leading cause of neonatal meningitis. Despite the resulting disease severity, the pathogenesis of GBS is not completely understood, especially during the early phases of infection. To investigate GBS factors necessary for bloodstream survival, we performed a transposon (Tn) mutant screen in our bacteremia infection model using a GBS mariner transposon mutant library previously developed by our group. We id

BACKGROUND: Presence of a prosthetic joint entails a life-long risk of haematogenous periprosthetic joint infection (hPJI) during bacteraemia. For bacteraemia with Staphylococcus aureus the hPJI frequency has been described to be up to 40% and for streptococci up to 20%, with large variation among reported frequencies.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the hPJI frequency from bacteraemia with virulent gram-positive cocci in patients with hip and/or knee prosthesis.
METHODS: A population and register based approach was used. Through cross-matching of blood cultures positive for virulent gra

OBJECTIVES: The long-term risk of child and adolescent psychiatric disorders (PDs) after neonatal invasive group B Streptococcus disease (iGBS) and the modifying factors are poorly understood.
METHODS: A population-based matched cohort study, including 1548 infants with iGBS diagnosed during the first 3 months of life from 1997 through 2020 and follow-up until 2022, based on data from Danish national health and administrative registers. A general population comparison cohort of infants without iGBS was randomly sampled and matched 1:10 by sex, the child's birth year and month, and gestational

BACKGROUND: Neonatal sepsis is a major cause of infant mortality, and it accounts for a significant consumption of antimicrobials in paediatrics. This is the first comprehensive study on neonatal sepsis in Hong Kong.
METHODS: From 2014 to 2023, all neonates admitted to a single institution with culture-proven infections from the blood and/or cerebrospinal fluid were selected and reviewed retrospectively. The infecting organisms, their antibiotic nonsusceptibility pattern, and the concordance of empirical antimicrobial therapy with the microbiological profiles were described and were further c

OBJECTIVES: Colonization with Group B Streptococcus (GBS) during pregnancy can lead to invasive GBS disease (iGBS) in neonates, including meningitis, pneumonia or sepsis, which carries a high mortality risk. American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends universal GBS screening for all pregnant individuals between 36 0/7 and 37 6/7 weeks of gestation. However, due to the insufficient population-based studies on universal screening and GBS colonization rates in late periods of pregnancy in Türkiye, we aimed to evaluate the prevalence of GBS and its antibiotic resistance t

BACKGROUND: Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is one of the leading causes of neonatal early-onset sepsis, resulting in high mortality and significant comorbidity. Intrapartum penicillin prophylaxis is recommended for pregnant women with GBS colonization to prevent vertical transmission. For pregnant women at high risk of anaphylaxis to penicillin, clindamycin is recommended only if the susceptibility of GBS isolates has been identified. We retrospectively examined the GBS detection rate and clindamycin resistance among Korean women of reproductive age over the last 20 years.
METHODS: Microbiologic

Invasive neonatal Group B streptococcal (GBS) disease is a globally recognised serious condition. Its most devastating impact is during perinatal and postnatal periods. Epidemiological studies from high-income countries (HICs) showed that maternal rectovaginal GBS colonisation is the leading cause. It was estimated that world-wide, there were 20 million pregnant women with rectovaginal GBS colonisation which has caused 46,200 stillbirths, 40,500 cases of invasive maternal diseases, and 231,800 cases of early-onset and 162,200 cases of late-onset sepsis in neonates/infants. Among neonates/infan

OBJECTIVES: Streptococcus agalactiae, or group B Streptococcus (GBS), is a significant pathogen associated with severe infections in neonates, particularly sepsis and meningitis. The increasing prevalence of antibiotic resistance among GBS strains is a growing public health concern, necessitating a comprehensive meta-analysis to evaluate the prevalence of this resistance globally.
METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive systematic search across four major scientific databases: Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, and EMBASE, targeting articles published until December 13, 2023. This meta-analysis fo

BACKGROUND: Pyomyoma is a rare, but potentially fatal, complication of uterine leiomyoma. Most cases occur in postpartum or postmenopausal patients with vascular disease and arise due to infarction and infection of existing fibroids. The proposed diagnostic triad for pyomyoma includes 1) sepsis or bacteremia; 2) uterine leiomyomata; and 3) no other apparent source of infection. We present a case of a postmenopausal patient who presented with the aforementioned triad and was found to have a pyomyoma, positive for Streptococcus agalactiae.

BACKGROUND: Group B Streptococcus (GBS) infection is a leading cause of neonatal morbidity. Maternal rectovaginal GBS colonization is a primary risk factor for early onset neonatal GBS infection. In Belgium, pregnant women are screened and, if positive or at risk of transmission, offered intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis (IAP). We aimed to provide the first comprehensive overview of Belgian data and identify possible risk factors of maternal GBS colonization and neonatal infection.
METHODS: We calculated proportions of maternal screening, colonization and incidence of all neonatal GBS infect

OBJECTIVE: The impact of maternal group B Streptococcus (GBS) colonization on outcomes of expectant management in late preterm prelabor rupture of membranes (PPROM) is debated. This study examined maternal and neonatal infectious outcomes in women with late PPROM at 34-36.6 weeks of gestation, stratified by GBS colonization status.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 412 women admitted for expectant management of late PPROM. Outcomes were compared between GBS-positive (n = 73) and GBS-negative (n = 339) groups. Co-primary outcomes were clinical chorioamnionitis and latency durat
