Streptococcus agalactiae (group B Streptococcus, GBS) is a major pathogen in neonates and adults causing neonatal sepsis, pneumonia, and meningitis. Although penicillin is the first-line treatment, GBS infections have developed multidrug resistance, including non-susceptibility to penicillin. Given a lack of molecular genetic research, further characterization of clinical isolates is essential. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to advance our understanding of their resistance profiles and molecular epidemiology of penicillin-non-susceptible GBS isolates. We conducted a comprehensive analysis

BACKGROUND: Early-onset Group B Streptococcus (EOGBS) infection is a leading cause of early-onset neonatal sepsis with significant morbidity and mortality. EOGBS is preventable with the administration of intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis (IAP), recommended in New Zealand (NZ) for laboring women with clinical risk factors for infant infection. Given that there are alternative approaches to IAP eligibility, understanding the current epidemiology of infant Group B Streptococcus (GBS) infection in NZ is essential for optimizing prevention.
METHODS: A retrospective study (2012-2021) was conducted

Early onset sepsis (EOS) is a blood stream infection that occurs, by varying definitions, during a neonate's first 3 or 7 days of life. In the United States, Streptococcus agalactiae and Escherichia coli are the most common pathogens associated with EOS. Worldwide, Klebsiella, Acinetobacter, and Staphylococcus aureus are also common etiologies. Early recognition of risk factors and clinical concerns for EOS facilitates timely treatment. Current research is focusing on ways to reduce unnecessary treatment of infants with risk factors for EOS without true infection, while still appropriately det

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is the most common cause of neonatal sepsis. Screening for vaginal-rectal colonization of the mother is important to prevent exposure. The current standard diagnostic method for GBS is to collect a vaginal-rectal swab and inoculate in LIM broth to increase sensitivity. Use of flocked swabs such as Eswabs has become the recommended collection device due to their increased recovery rates and potential for automation. Despite being the recommended collection device, there is a lack of adequate literature providing guidance on processing of Eswabs for GBS cultures. This

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a human pathogen and a leading cause of neonatal meningitis, pneumonia, and sepsis in newborns and adults. Group B Streptococcal meningitis is caused when blood-borne GBS interacts with and disrupts the blood-brain barrier, causing inflammation. The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is comprised of highly specialized brain endothelial cells (BECs) that serve as the interface between the circulation and the central nervous system (CNS), creating a tight endothelial cell barrier. Modeling the BBB using an induced pluripotent stem-cell (iPSC)-derived brain-like endothelial

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) causes severe neonatal infections, leading to high mortality rates. This study aimed to investigate the genetic characteristics of GBS isolates in a hospital setting. Nineteen isolates were identified through a review of preservation and cultivation processes since January 2022, followed by antibiotic susceptibility testing. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) was used to investigate genetic relationships. Among 19 isolates, serotype V was the most prevalent (n = 7), followed by Ib (n = 6) and III (n = 6). Genomic sequence analysis revealed that 19 isolates belonged to fo

Arcanobacterium haemolyticum (A. haemolyticum), a Gram-positive, anaerobic, rod-shaped bacterium, is typically associated with pharyngitis and skin infections but can also cause severe, life-threatening infections such as sepsis and necrotizing fasciitis (NF), particularly in immunocompromised patients. We report a case of severe NF of the lower extremity caused by a mixed infection with A. haemolyticum and Streptococcus agalactiae (S. agalactiae) in a patient with diabetes mellitus. A 51-year-old male with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus presented with extensive swelling, necrosis, and bu

Group B streptococcus (GBS) or Streptococcus agalactiae is a beta-hemolytic, Gram-positive coccus that can colonize the genitourinary and gastrointestinal tract of pregnant people. GBS can transition from asymptomatic colonization to pathogenic bacterium which can then lead to adverse pregnancy, maternal and neonatal outcomes. While much of the literature focuses on outcomes affecting the neonate, such as early- and late-onset neonatal sepsis, GBS is also thought to be associated with specific pregnancy and fetal adverse outcomes including preterm birth, preterm premature rupture of membranes,

Streptococcus agalactiae (group B Streptococcus; GBS) is a leading cause of neonatal sepsis and meningitis. Despite advances in molecular microbiology, GBS genome engineering remains laborious due to inefficient mutagenesis protocols. Here, we report a versatile and rapid Cas12a-based toolkit for GBS genetic manipulation. We developed two shuttle plasmids-pGBSedit for genome editing and pGBScrispri for inducible CRISPR interference-derived from an Enterococcus faecium system and optimized for GBS. Using these tools, we achieved targeted gene insertions, markerless deletions, and efficient, tem

Invasive neonatal GBS infections constitute a major cause of sepsis and meningitis in Western countries. Vaginal/rectal GBS colonization during pregnancy is the main risk factor for the development of early-onset infections (GBS-EOD) in newborn by vertical transmission at birth, in addition to prematurity and stillbirth. In Italy, intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis (IAP) to prevent GBS-EOD is offered to pregnant women who tested as GBS-positive in late pregnancy. Passive surveillance in Italy showed that a non-negligible number of GBS-EOD cases (about 50%) occurred from GBS-negative pregnant w

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) colonisation affects around 13% of pregnant women and increases the risk of peripartum infection in newborns, preterm delivery and premature rupture of membranes. GBS infections are a major cause of neonatal sepsis. Early onset GBS (EOGBS) infections in the first seven days of life are particularly dangerous for newborns. Prevention is achieved by intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis following a positive GBS screening during pregnancy. Screening strategies in pregnant women include universal GBS screening using a rectovaginal swab, assessment of maternal risk factors

Background/Objective: Early-onset neonatal sepsis (EOS), defined as infection occurring within the first 72 h after birth, remains a major contributor to neonatal morbidity and mortality worldwide. Although advances in perinatal care have improved overall outcomes, the diagnosis of EOS continues to be challenging. Clinical presentations are often nonspecific, laboratory confirmation is often delayed, and immune responses vary considerably among neonates. Expanding our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying EOS is essential in enhancing early detection, refining risk stratificatio

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a normal constituent of the female genital and gastrointestinal flora but remains a leading cause of perinatal bacterial infections, including endometritis, bacteremia, chorioamnionitis, and urinary tract infections in pregnant women. In Ethiopia, reported GBS colonization rates among pregnant women range from 7.2 to 25.5%. This study aimed to determine the prevalence, antimicrobial susceptibility patterns, and associated factors of GBS colonization among pregnant women attending antenatal care (ANC) at Debre Markos Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Northwest E

Group B Streptococcus (GBS), or Streptococcus agalactiae, is a significant cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality, with late-onset disease (LOGBS) typically manifesting as bacteremia or meningitis. Osteoarticular infections, particularly septic polyarthritis, are exceedingly rare but potentially devastating complications of LOGBS. We report a rare case of LOGBS presenting as septic polyarthritis in a 28-day-old term male neonate. The infant presented with a 15-day history of progressive swelling in the left knee and right shoulder, accompanied by irritability and feeding difficulties. Ultra

Vaginal colonization by Streptococcus agalactiae, also known as Group B Streptococcus (GBS), is a major risk factor for ascending infections, preterm birth, and neonatal sepsis. Current GBS prevention efforts include routine GBS perinatal screening and intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis, which decrease the rate of early-onset neonatal sepsis, but have drawbacks that include impacting the infant's developing microbiome. Lactobacillus-dominant vaginal microbiomes provide protection against pathogens such as GBS, and using probiotics as an antibiotic-free approach to limit GBS colonization is of

Microbiome disruption is a proposed mechanism for the observed differences in child health outcomes by maternal HIV status, but the early neonatal microbiome of HIV-exposed (HE) newborns is not well-studied. We used 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid sequencing to analyze the microbiome composition of nasal, skin, and rectal samples collected ≤72 h after birth from 57 hospitalized neonates in Botswana, 33% of whom were HE. Beta diversity differed by anatomic compartment (P = .001) and days since birth; however, interindividual differences were greater than those by anatomic site (P = .001). There

AIM: The aim of this study was to clarify whether the detection rate of group B Streptococcus (GBS) in screening tests for pregnant women at 35-37 weeks of gestation increases using the selective enrichment media available in Japan.
METHODS: Vaginal-rectal swabs were collected from pregnant women at 35-37 weeks of gestation from nine obstetric medical institutions in the Nagasaki Prefecture. The collected swabs were inoculated into selective enrichment media and directly plated onto blood agar to investigate the differences in the isolation frequencies of GBS.
RESULTS: We collected vaginal-r

UNLABELLED: Streptococcus agalactiae or Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is an opportunistic pathogen that asymptomatically colonizes the vaginal tract of up to 30% of healthy individuals. However, during pregnancy it is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, and GBS can be transmitted to the fetus in utero , or the newborn during vaginal birth, resulting in invasive neonatal disease. Previously we identified that Akkermansia muciniphila alters the dynamics of GBS vaginal colonization. However, the global effect of A. muciniphila in the female genital tract remains largely unknown, as it has p
