Vitamin D deficiency and duration of COVID-19 symptoms in UK healthcare workers.

OBJECTIVES: Vitamin D has a role in the innate immunity against pathogens and is also involved in mechanisms for reducing inflammation. VD deficiency (VDD) may increase COVID-19 infection susceptibility, however research is limited on the association between VDD and COVID-19 symptom prevalence and duration. The study aimed to determine whether VDD is a risk factor for the presence and extended duration of COVID-19 symptoms. METHODS: Data was analyzed from NHS healthcare workers who isolated due to COVID-19 symptoms as a part of the COVID-19 convalescent immunity study between 12th to 22nd May

The correlation between serum vitamin D status and the occurrence of diabetic foot ulcers: a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis.

The association between vitamin D concentrations and the occurrence of diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) remains a topic of ongoing debate. In order to provide a comprehensive and updated review, we conducted this meta-analysis to further investigate the relationship between vitamin D concentrations and DFUs occurrence. The following databases, including Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Web of Science, PubMed, CBM, CNKI, WANFANG DATA and VIP Database, were systematically searched for studies published up to Dec. 20th, 2023. The combined estimation was calculated using both fixed-effects and random-effects

Serum vitamin D levels and the severity and clinical course of COVID-19.

Low vitamin D levels are associated with different pulmonary diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchial asthma, and obstructive sleep apnea. In this study, we aimed to assess the relation between vitamin D levels and COVID-19 severity. Positive COVID-19 patients were subjected to clinical examination, computed tomography of the chest, and laboratory investigations. Serum vitamin D level was measured and correlated with the severity and the clinical course of the disease. The study included 72 patients, classified into four groups according to the severity of the disease

The importance of individual beliefs in assessing treatment efficacy.

In recent years, there has been debate about the effectiveness of treatments from different fields, such as neurostimulation, neurofeedback, brain training, and pharmacotherapy. This debate has been fuelled by contradictory and nuanced experimental findings. Notably, the effectiveness of a given treatment is commonly evaluated by comparing the effect of the active treatment versus the placebo on human health and/or behaviour. However, this approach neglects the individual's subjective experience of the type of treatment she or he received in establishing treatment efficacy. Here, we show that

Current or recent malaria infection is associated with elevated inflammation-adjusted ferritin concentrations in pre-school children: a secondary analysis of the BRINDA database.

Inflammation and infections such as malaria affect micronutrient biomarker concentrations and hence estimates of nutritional status. It is unknown whether correction for C-reactive protein (CRP) and α1-acid glycoprotein (AGP) fully captures the modification in ferritin concentrations during a malaria infection, or whether environmental and sociodemographic factors modify this association. Cross-sectional data from eight surveys in children aged 6-59 months (Cameroon, Cote d'Ivoire, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Nigeria and Zambia; n 6653) from the Biomarkers Reflecting Inflammation and Nutritional D

Evaluation of vitamin D status in adult patients with newly diagnosed immune thrombocytopenia.

It has been shown that 25-OH vitamin D not only preserves calcium and bone homeostasis but also has immunomodulatory effects. The purpose of this study was to assess the association between adult patients with recently diagnosed immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) and vitamin D levels. Retrospective technique was employed in this study. The associations between 25(OH)D value and platelet count, as well as the clinical symptoms of ITP upon diagnosis and 25(OH)D value, were our main findings. A total of 60 patients diagnosed and followed up in our clinic were included in the study. Forty-one patients

A Study of Serum Ferritin and Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone Levels in Male Patients with Androgenetic Alopecia.

BACKGROUND: Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is a multifactorial disorder expressed by several genes and various environmental factors apart from nutritional and endocrinological factors. Although association of iron deficiency (ID) as well as thyroid disorder has been evaluated in females, this is still an untouched topic as far as male pattern hair loss (MPHL) is concerned. This study tries to establish if any association of MPHL with ID and thyroid dysfunction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This case-control study comprised 30 consecutive cases of MPHL and equal numbers of age-matched healthy controls

Hypersensitive reaction due to ferric carboxymaltose in a post-partum mother experienced in a tertiary care hospital in West Bengal, India: A case report.

Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) is highly associated with insufficient nutrition, chronic renal failure and congestive heart failure. Post-partum anaemia is also very common with a high mortality rate. Ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) is a non-dextran third-generation intravenous (IV)-iron preparation. FCM is an effective means of correcting IDA and improving haemoglobin (Hb) concentration in IDA. Incidence of IDA is common in low socio-economic groups. Clinical research has shown that the risk of hypersensitivity reaction (HSR) with FCM is low. An 18- year-old female has faced post-partum anaemia. I

Efficacy of weekly versus daily cholecalciferol for repleting serum vitamin D (25(OH)D) deficiency: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND/RATIONALE: Weekly cholecalciferol can replace daily supplementation to reduce pill burden in patients with complex medication regimens and hypovitaminosis D, but evidence supporting this switch is unclear. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine whether weekly cholecalciferol was superior to daily cholecalciferol to replete patients with hypovitaminosis D. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of randomized controlled trials involving participants with baseline hypovitaminosis D (<30 ng/ml) comparing weekly versus daily cholecalciferol dosing and where serum cholecalciferol was measu

The Interplay between Liver and Adipose Tissue in the Onset of Liver Diseases: Exploring the Role of Vitamin Deficiency.

The deficiency of vitamins, a condition known as "hidden hunger", causes comprehensive pathological states. Research over the years has identified a relationship between liver diseases and hypovitaminosis or defects in vitamin metabolism. The exact mechanisms remain elusive; however, the crucial involvement of specific vitamins in metabolic functions, alongside the reclassification of liver disease as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), has prompted researchers to investigate the potential cause-effect dynamics between vitamin deficiency and liver disease. Vitamin D Supplementation Does Not Enhance Gains in Muscle Strength and Lean Body Mass or Influence Cardiorespiratory Fitness in Vitamin D-Insufficient Middle-Aged Men Engaged in Resistance Training.

BACKGROUND: This study checked whether vitamin D (Vit-D) supplementation improves the efficacy of resistance training (RT) in terms of increasing muscle strength and lean body mass (LBM), and influencing cardiorespiratory fitness (VO2max) in Vit-D-deficient middle-aged healthy men. METHODS: Participants (n = 28) were quasi-randomly assigned to one of two groups, which, in a double-blind manner, supplemented their diet daily with either Vit-D (8000 IU; VD) or placebo (PLC) during participation in a 12-week supervised RT program. RESULTS: During the intervention, serum Vit-D concentrations inc

Serum Vitamin D3 as a Potential Biomarker for Neuronal Damage in Smoldering Multiple Sclerosis.

Permanent inflammatory demyelinating and neurodegenerative processes lead to neurological disability in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). The anti-inflammatory properties of vitamin D3 (VitD) are well established, but its role in neurodegeneration is still uncertain. The usefulness of the serum concentration of VitD as a potential biomarker in evaluating brain injury in terms of recently known smoldering MS was under consideration. Methods: We assessed the concentrations of the parameters of brain injury (NF-H, GPAF, S100B, UCHL1) in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of relapsing-remitting (R

[Scurvy-A now forgotten previously widespread disease].

From the sea voyages of the fifteenth century often lasting for years with provisions only of fish, salted meat and biscuits reports came of fatal health alterations of the seamen which were characterized by prostration, loss of teeth and bad breath.Reports on comparable endemic illnesses soon came from the Netherlands, North Germany, the Baltic area, France, Lorraine, Geneva, Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia, Swabia and Russia: the so-called land scurvy. The first medical specification was found in a letter from 1541 by Johann Echt to colleges in the area of Lower Germany, which was published four t

Evaluating vitamin D status in Chinese pre-school children using dried blood spots coupled with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.

AIM: Vitamin D is an essential micronutrient for multiple physiological processes, and its deficiency remains a world-wide public health problem that cannot be ignored. Dried blood spot (DBS) is a convenient tool in large-scale epidemiological studies, but its application in evaluating vitamin D status in Chinese population is still scarce. Herein, we aimed to determine the vitamin D status in Chinese pre-school children using DBS coupled with LC-MS/MS method. METHODS: We first developed a sensitive and reliable method for the determination of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) in DBS samples usin
