Pro-Vitamin A Biofortified Cavendish Banana: Trait Stability in the Field.

Vitamin A deficiency (VAD), a major global health concern, has driven efforts to develop staple crops with enhanced pro-vitamin A (pVA) content. Delivering meaningful nutritional benefits, however, requires technologies that maintain elevated carotenoid levels under field conditions. Previous proof-of-concept work demonstrated that pVA content can be substantially increased in Cavendish bananas through genetic modification, providing a platform for transferring the technology into East African Highland banana (EAHB) cultivars relevant to reducing VAD in Uganda. To evaluate performance under ag

Transcriptomic and targeted metabolomic insights into carotenoid-mediated color formation in sorghum grains.

INTRODUCTION: Sorghum is a major staple crop in semi-arid regions; however, its generally low grain carotenoid content limits its potential contribution to alleviating vitamin A deficiency. Elucidating the regulatory mechanisms underlying carotenoid accumulation is therefore essential for the nutritional improvement of sorghum. METHODS: Five sorghum varieties with distinct grain colors (white, gray, yellow, red, and black) were analyzed using integrated targeted carotenoid metabolomic and transcriptomic approaches to characterize carotenoid composition and its molecular regulation. RESULTS A

Dietary intake and vitamin A deficiency among children aged 6 to 23 months in the Province of Sanmatenga, Burkina Faso.

BACKGROUND: Micronutrient deficiencies are a serious public health problem in sub-Saharan Africa and have particularly devastating consequences for children’s health. In Burkina Faso, this burden, which is particularly marked by vitamin A deficiency, is exacerbated in certain areas where security and humanitarian problems are reducing access to health and nutritional services. One of the solutions most promoted at the national level to address these micronutrient deficiencies is the use of Small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplements (SQ-LNS). To understand the extent of this burden of maln

Boosting β-carotene in rice and wheat grains through seed-specific expression of a modified wheat or gene.

Vitamin A deficiency is a major public health problem affecting up to 50% of the world's population, as staple food crops like wheat and rice, which are often poor in many essential micronutrients such as vitamin A, are major staple food crops. Biofortification of cereal crops with β-carotene (provitamin A) through genetic engineering is a potential solution to overcome vitamin A deficiency. The Orange (Or) protein is involved in the regulation of carotenoid accumulation and previous studies demonstrated high carotenoid accumulation due to a single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the CDS lead
