Keratomalacia in a Neonate Born to a Mother with Night Blindness: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Xerophthalmia, caused by vitamin A deficiency, is a significant public health problem that can lead to severe ocular surface damage, including keratomalacia and permanent blindness if not promptly treated. CASE: A 26-day-old male neonate presented with bilateral corneal clouding ten days after birth. Ocular examination revealed corneal xerosis in both eyes and a corneal perforation in the right eye, which was sealed with iris tissue. The mother reported a history of night blindness during the third trimester of pregnancy, suggestive of maternal vitamin A deficiency. OBSERVATION

Xerophthalmia and bilateral optic neuropathy secondary to nutritional deficiency in a patient with autism spectrum disorder: Case report and literature review.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), chronic vitamin A deficiency is the leading preventable cause of childhood blindness.1 Patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) represent a high-risk group because they may present eating disorders that lead to severe nutritional deficiencies. We present the case of a pediatric patient diagnosed with ASD who developed xerophthalmia and bilateral optic neuropathy in the context of vitamin A deficiency, associated with vitamin B12 deficiency and anemia, who was managed and followed up through a multidisciplinary approach. The aim of this work

Prevalence of Xerophthalmia and Associated Factors Among Pregnant Women in Tigray Region, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Xerophthalmia during pregnancy is a major public health problem, associated with an increased risk of morbidity and mortality among pregnant women. Studies indicated that Ethiopia is a country with the highest rates of xerophthalmia. However, most studies emphasize biochemical deficiency or night blindness rather than the full clinical spectrum. This study was intended to assess all clinical forms of xerophthalmia. OBJECTIVE: The study assessed the prevalence and associated factors of xerophthalmia among pregnant women attending antenatal care in general and referral public hospit

Vitamin A Status in Cystic Fibrosis in the Current Era of CFTR-Directed Therapies.

Vitamin A plays an important role in multiple homeostatic functions such as vision, immunity, epithelial cell integrity and differentiation, cell signaling, pulmonary function, reproduction, growth, and development. Vitamin A deficiency was described in people with cystic fibrosis (pwCF) due to a multitude of causes, such as suboptimally managed exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, advanced cystic fibrosis-related liver disease (aCFLD), and a history of intestinal resection, and is generally rare in contemporary practice. Apart from true vitamin A deficiency, low vitamin A levels may also be not

Xerophthalmia and ocular manifestations of vitamin A deficiency in children in high-income countries: A systematic review.

Xerophthalmia is a vision-threatening eye condition caused by vitamin A deficiency (VAD). Cases of xerophthalmia in high-income countries (HICs) are vulnerable to misdiagnosis, causing delays in treatment and adverse visual outcomes. We define the features, causes and complications of VAD and xerophthalmia in children of HICs. Our study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses guidelines (CRD42024492023). We performed a search for eligible articles on Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane, PubMed and Medline. Cases reporting on children under 18 years of age r

The Increasing Prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder in the U.S. and Its Implications for Pediatric Micronutrient Status: A Narrative Review of Case Reports and Series.

INTRODUCTION: Micronutrient deficiencies are considered uncommon in the United States. However, children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are at higher risk due to food selectivity and restrictive eating patterns. The prevalence of ASD in the U.S. has quadrupled over the past two decades, amplifying the need to address nutritional gaps in this population. OBJECTIVE: This narrative review examines the prevalence and clinical impact of underreported micronutrient deficiencies beyond vitamin C in children with ASD using case reports and series. METHODS: Case reports and case series reporting

Multiple Hypovitaminoses Presenting as Optic Disc Swelling in a Child with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Restrictive Eating.

Optic disc swelling, frequently associated with vitamin A toxicity, is infrequently linked to vitamin A deficiency. This report describes a 6-year-old male with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and avoidant restrictive food intake disorder who presented with xerophthalmia, optic disc swelling, vision changes, and deficiencies in vitamins A, B1, and iron. The patient's behavioral dysregulation posed important challenges for the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of his hypovitaminoses. This case underscores the importance of considering multiple nutritional deficiencies as the etiology of optic

Value of vitamin A supplements in increasing macular thickness in a patient with vitamin A deficiency and nyctalopy.

Although vitamin A deficiency is a rare cause of nyctalopia, its detection is crucial since vitamin A supplementation can improve vision. This is the case of a 69-year-old woman with progressive night blindness, a past medical history of intestinal surgery, and low vitamin A levels. After vitamin A treatment, her visual acuity improved, along with an increase in macular thickness. Vitamin A is essential for photoreceptor function, and its deficiency is associated with conditions such as xerophthalmia and keratopathy. OCT proved useful in monitoring treatment response. It is important to suspec

Serum Vitamin A Levels and Xerophthalmia among Children with Protein Energy Malnutrition in Zaria, Northwest Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) is one of the major risk factors for vitamin A deficiency (VAD), which may be complicated by xerophthalmia. There have been several interventions employed to tackle VAD in our environment. However, there are limited recent local studies assessing the interplay between VAD and the burden of xerophthalmia in under-five children with PEM. The study aims to determine the association between serum vitamin A levels and xerophthalmia among under-five children with PEM. METHODOLOGY: This was a prospective cross-sectional study conducted among 200 children
