Nepalese journal of ophthalmology : a biannual peer-reviewed academic journal of the Nepal Ophthalmic Society : NEPJOPH2026eng
INTRODUCTION: Xerophthalmia, caused by vitamin A deficiency, is a significant public health problem that can lead to severe ocular surface damage, including keratomalacia and permanent blindness if not promptly treated.
CASE: A 26-day-old male neonate presented with bilateral corneal clouding ten days after birth. Ocular examination revealed corneal xerosis in both eyes and a corneal perforation in the right eye, which was sealed with iris tissue. The mother reported a history of night blindness during the third trimester of pregnancy, suggestive of maternal vitamin A deficiency.

Xerophthalmia is a vision-threatening eye condition caused by vitamin A deficiency (VAD). Cases of xerophthalmia in high-income countries (HICs) are vulnerable to misdiagnosis, causing delays in treatment and adverse visual outcomes. We define the features, causes and complications of VAD and xerophthalmia in children of HICs. Our study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses guidelines (CRD42024492023). We performed a search for eligible articles on Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane, PubMed and Medline. Cases reporting on children under 18 years of age r

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Vitamin A deficiency is a public health problem in developing countries including Ethiopia. Thus, its prevalence and associated factors in each locality is essential for tackling the problem since the cause differs across geographical areas and community to community. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of clinical vitamin A deficiency and associated factors among preschool children aged 24-59 months in Finote Selam Town, Northwest Ethiopia, 2022.
METHODS: A Community-based cross-sectional study design was conducted from April 1 to April 30/2022. A total of

BACKGROUND: The influence of pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and gestational weight gain (GWG) on perinatal outcomes of women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) remains unclear. Therefore, we explored how the above indicators influence pregnancy outcomes in women with PCOS.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted involving the baseline characteristics, laboratory data, and pregnancy outcomes of 722 pregnant women with PCOS. Subjects were grouped in a way to find out risks in their pregnancy outcomes. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to investigate how BMI a

Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) can manifest as xerophthalmia, a spectrum of eye conditions ranging from night blindness to severe outcomes like keratomalacia and corneal scarring. We report two cases of a seven-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy in Japan with xerophthalmia caused by VAD associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The first case demonstrates severe complications of prolonged VAD, including optic disc edema and irreversible corneal damage, which then results in blindness. The second case identified and treated earlier in the stage of corneal xerosis shows favorable prognosis. T

BACKGROUND: The clinical manifestations of vitamin A deficiency (VAD) involve night blindness, bitot's spots, corneal xerosis, and corneal scars. It is the most important cause of preventable childhood blindness among children and causes morbidity and mortality. Even though Ethiopia implemented high-potency vitamin A supplements, the occurrence of VAD remains significant. This study was to identify determinants of clinical VAD among preschool-aged children (PSC) in southwest Ethiopia.
METHOD: A community-based survey was conducted among 411 randomly selected PSCs. A pretested and structured q

BACKGROUND: Respiratory and gastrointestinal manifestations are the main causes of mortality and morbidity in cystic fibrosis. Although these symptoms are well recognized, ophthalmic involvement of cystic fibrosis secondary to vitamin A deficiency is uncommon and has been reported very rarely in the medical literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we report a 2.5-year-old Iranian boy who presented with bilateral corneal xerosis and corneal opacity secondary to vitamin A deficiency related to cystic fibrosis malabsorption.
CONCLUSION: Malabsorption of fat-soluble vitamins is a common presentation

Xeropthalmia refers to a range of ocular symptoms caused by vitamin A deficiency (VAD), ranging from night blindness and Bitot's spots to corneal xerosis, ulceration, and keratomalacia, which can lead to blindness. We report two cases of xerophthalmia in children with intellectual disabilities. Ocular examination revealed generalized conjunctival xerosis, corneal xerosis, and dense superficial punctate keratopathy. Both share a history of a strict self-selective diet of mainly rice and noodles. Serum vitamin A levels for these children showed a very low level (<0.10 µmol/L) and were categorize

We report a rare presentation of xerophthalmia due to partial pancreatic exocrine insufficiency following Frey's surgery (pancreatic resection) in a 12-year-old girl. The child had undergone this surgery for chronic calcific pancreatitis 3 years before and presented with ocular irritation and decreased vision of 3 months duration. Ocular examination showed severe conjunctival and corneal xerosis. Her serum retinol levels and 25-hydroxyvitamin D were tested and were extremely low. The condition rapidly reversed following high-dose replacement therapy with vitamin A and D. This case highlights t

Delayed recognition and treatment of vitamin A deficiency (VAD) in adults leads to devastating complications. A 24-year-old woman presented with diarrhea, malaise, and shortness of breath. Her medical history included blunt abdominal trauma for which, she had bowel resection surgery and revision surgery within a year of the last surgery at the age of 8 years. She had difficulty in night vision and dry eyes. The best-corrected visual acuity was 6/18 in the BE. On slit-lamp examination in the both eyes (BE), the conjunctiva was thick, dry-looking with wrinkling, and the cornea had diffused super

Vitamin A has an essential role in the maintenance of corneal and conjunctival epithelization, as well as photoreceptor transduction in the retina. A deficiency of vitamin A causes keratinization of the surface epithelium, and night blindness is often the first symptom. This report describes a case of chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (CIPO), a rare and potentially fatal disease, diagnosed following detection of a vitamin A deficiency in an ophthalmological examination. A 25-year-old female patient presented with a 3-month history of dryness, a burning sensation, and decreased vision, espe

Xerosis is a corneal and ocular surface disease caused by vitamin A deficiency. It is a rare disease in developed countries, but in third world countries it is a common cause of blindness. We describe a typical xerosis in patient with vitamin A deficiency and long-term malnutrition and alcoholism in our case. In spite of initially serious presentation of the disease, the patients response to treatment was prompt and there was complete regression of the disease. Key words: xerosis, vitamin A deficiency.
