Bilateral keratomalacia secondary to xerophthalmia.

INTRODUCTION: Vitamin A deficiency leads to a wide spectrum of ocular manifestations ranging from conjunctival xerosis to corneal ulceration and perforation. Penetrating keratoplasty along with vitamin A supplementation can save the eye and useful vision. CASE: A 10-year-old boy presented with decreased vision in both eyes for 3 months. Slit-lamp examination with diffuse light revealed bilateral corneal thinning with iris prolapse at inferior aspect of cornea. He underwent therapeutic penetrating keratoplasty in both eyes. Vitamin A supplementation was given as per national protocol. Till 1 y

Amniotic membrane grafting for traumatic complete spectaculectomy and keratomalacia in a Boelen's python (Simalia boeleni).

OBJECTIVE: To describe the surgical repair of traumatic complete spectaculectomy and keratomalacia in a snake. ANIMALS: A 10.5-year-old, female, Boelen's python (Simalia boeleni) was presented with iatrogenic, near-complete spectaculectomy associated with bacterial keratitis, keratomalacia, and hypopyon. PROCEDURES: Corneal samples for cytological evaluation and bacterial culture were collected. Following medical stabilization of the bacterial keratitis, a double-layered dry amniotic membrane graft was placed. The first amniotic membrane layer was placed over the cornea with the edges tucked

Dynamics of Serum Retinol and Alpha-Tocopherol Levels According to Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Status.

The available data on the association between micronutrients in the blood and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are limited. To investigate the clinical implications of this relationship, we sought to identify the difference in the serum levels of vitamins A and E according to NAFLD status using data from the seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. In this cross-sectional study of the Korean population, NAFLD and its severity were defined using prediction models. Differences in the prevalence and severity of NAFLD were analyzed according to serum retinol (vitami

Evaluation and Clinical Course of Keratomalacia With Descemetocele in a Child With Autism and Vitamin A Deficiency.

Autistic children with selective diets have an elevated risk for vitamin A deficiency. The authors present the case of a 7-year-old boy with keratomalacia resulting from dietary vitamin A deficiency. Optical coherence tomography and ultrasound biomicroscopy can provide useful details of the cornea and underlying structures. Vitamin A supplementation can result in significant resolution, obviating the need for surgical intervention. [J Pediatr Ophthalmol Strabismus. 2020;57:e1-e3.].

Bilateral Keratomalacia Leading to Blindness Secondary to Diet-Induced Vitamin A Deficiency in Infants.

Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin that plays an important role in the development of the immune system, and a deficiency can cause blindness associated with xerophthalmia and premature mortality. Blindness from vitamin A deficiency is avoidable if supplements such as breast milk and other food fortification are provided to neonates at the time of weaning. The authors describe two infants who presented with keratomalacia and subsequent blindness. [J Pediatr Ophthalmol Strabismus. 2020;57:e12-e14.].

COVID-19: Endogenous Retinoic Acid Theory and Retinoic Acid Depletion Syndrome.

This study presents two new concepts and definitions to the medical literature. One of those is "endogenous retinoic acid theory" and the other "retinoic acid depletion syndrome". A new classification will be provided for the immune system: "retinoic acid-dependent component" and "retinoic acid non-dependent component". If this theory is verified, all the diseases where the retinoic acid metabolism is defective and retinoic acid levels are low will be identified and new approaches will be developed fortreating such diseases. When the need for retinoic acids increases, such as acute infection,

Coffee polyphenols extracted from green coffee beans improve skin properties and microcirculatory function.

Coffee polyphenols (CPPs), including chlorogenic acid, exert various physiological activities. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of CPPs on skin properties and microcirculatory function in humans. In this double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 49 female subjects with mildly xerotic skin received either a test beverage containing CPPs (270 mg/100 mL/day) or a placebo beverage for 8 weeks. The ingestion of CPPs significantly lowered the clinical scores for skin dryness, decreased transepidermal water loss, skin surface pH, and increased stratum corneum hydration and the r

Vitamin A-Deficiency Eye Disease Among Soldiers in the U.S. Civil War: Spectrum of Clinical Disease.

During the U.S. Civil War, nutritional night blindness was a common problem among soldiers forced to subsist of nutritionally inadequate diets, but medical officers typically attributed this complaint to malingering and did not suspect or appreciate a dietary basis. More than 8,000 cases of night blindness were recorded among Union troops, but many cases were not tabulated because of incomplete data for black soldiers and prisoners of war. From 1864 to 1865, during which comparable data were available for both whites and blacks, the average annual cumulative incidence of night blindness was 4.

Anterior Segment Findings in Vitamin A Deficiency: A Case Series.

Vitamin A deficiency is a rare but vision threatening disorder in the developed world, which can lead to blindness for severe keratomalacia with cornea scarring and perforation or night blindness due to impaired dark adaptation. Conversely, the disease is quite common in developing countries, as a consequence of chronic malnutrition. The correct diagnosis and therapy with prompt vitamin A supplementation avoid blindness. We report a series of 3 local cases with different age and causes for vitamin A deficiency. The diagnostic workup, therapy, and prognosis are discussed.

Similar appearance, different mechanisms: xerosis in HIV, atopic dermatitis and ageing.

Xerosis is one of the most common dermatologic disorders occurring in the elderly and in patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Xerosis has been linked to an impaired skin barrier function of the stratum corneum. Using Raman microspectroscopy, we concentrated on deeper skin layers, viable epidermis and dermis of 47 volunteers and associated molecular alterations to the evolution of xerosis and the skin barrier, for example, lipid, water and antioxidant content. A decrease in lipids within the viable epidermis is found for elderly and HIV-patients
