Prevalence of Xerophthalmia and Associated Factors Among Pregnant Women in Tigray Region, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Xerophthalmia during pregnancy is a major public health problem, associated with an increased risk of morbidity and mortality among pregnant women. Studies indicated that Ethiopia is a country with the highest rates of xerophthalmia. However, most studies emphasize biochemical deficiency or night blindness rather than the full clinical spectrum. This study was intended to assess all clinical forms of xerophthalmia. OBJECTIVE: The study assessed the prevalence and associated factors of xerophthalmia among pregnant women attending antenatal care in general and referral public hospit

Fundus albipunctatus-like retinopathy in hypovitaminosis A-related optic neuropathy with skull hyperostosis.

A young man presented with progressive night blindness, optic neuropathy and bilateral retinal flecks, initially suggestive of an inherited retinal dystrophy. Genetic testing identified a heterozygous pathogenic variant in USH2A alongside multiple variants of uncertain significance, none of which fully explained the phenotype. Further investigation revealed severe vitamin A deficiency and cranial hyperostosis with narrowing of the optic canals. Retinal findings improved following vitamin A supplementation. This case illustrates the diagnostic complexity of retinal dystrophies, emphasises the n

Xerophthalmia and ocular manifestations of vitamin A deficiency in children in high-income countries: A systematic review.

Xerophthalmia is a vision-threatening eye condition caused by vitamin A deficiency (VAD). Cases of xerophthalmia in high-income countries (HICs) are vulnerable to misdiagnosis, causing delays in treatment and adverse visual outcomes. We define the features, causes and complications of VAD and xerophthalmia in children of HICs. Our study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses guidelines (CRD42024492023). We performed a search for eligible articles on Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane, PubMed and Medline. Cases reporting on children under 18 years of age r

An avoidant restrictive food intake disorder in a 7-year-old male came with nutritional deficiencies: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) is a recently recognized feeding and eating disorder characterized by restricted or avoidance of food intake due to the sensory characteristics of the food or fear of the unpleasant consequences of eating without concerns about body image. It commonly presents in childhood and can lead to serious nutritional and developmental outcomes. While reports from high-income countries are increasing, data from low-resource settings remain scarce. In such settings, malnutrition is often attributed to food insecurity or infection, making ARFID

Dark Adaptometry as a Diagnostic Tool in Retinal Diseases: Mechanisms and Clinical Utility.

Dark adaptometry is a non-invasive functional test that assesses the retina's ability to recover sensitivity in low-light conditions following photobleaching. This review explores the physiological mechanisms underlying dark adaptation (DA), including photopigment regeneration and the critical role of the retinal pigment epithelium in the visual cycle. We detail clinical protocols for dark adaptometry using modern instruments such as the AdaptDx, highlighting methodological advances that improve testing efficiency and reproducibility. The clinical utility of dark adaptometry is examined across

Infrared Photography: A Novel Diagnostic Approach for Ocular Surface Abnormalities Due to Vitamin A Deficiency.

Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) remains a significant cause of preventable blindness worldwide, with ocular surface changes representing early manifestations that require prompt recognition and treatment. Conventional examination methods are capable of detecting advanced changes; however, subtle conjunctival abnormalities may be overlooked, potentially delaying the administration of appropriate interventions. We herein present the case of a 5-year-old Japanese boy with severe VAD due to selective eating patterns. This case demonstrates the utility of infrared photography as a novel diagnostic appro

Selective Impairment of Rod-Driven Vision in Vitamin A Deficiency: Insights From Examining the Effect of Desensitizing Backgrounds.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore whether nyctalopia in vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is attributable to simple reduction in quantal catch or to an "equivalent background" phenomenon. METHODS: Five individuals were recruited for experimental electroretinograms (ERGs), including three healthy participants (aged 21 to 47 years), one patient with VAD (aged 70 years), and one patient with GNAT2-associated achromatopsia (aged 43 years). Recordings used conductive fiber electrodes and followed dark adaptation and mydriasis. Dim flashes of varying strengths were delivered in the dark to

Nyctalopia Due to Vitamin A Deficiency Secondary to Short Bowel Syndrome: When the Electroretinogram Is the Diagnostic Key.

Background: Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) can occur due to malnutrition or reduced intestinal absorption, such as in short bowel syndrome (SBS). The main causes of SBS in adults include post-radiotherapy and surgery (e.g., repeated bowel resections). VAD mostly involves rods producing nyctalopia and reduced amplitudes of the electroretinogram (ERG) in scotopic conditions, with a characteristic negative ERG pattern (b/a < 1). Case Report: We report a 67-year-old woman with a history of gastric adenocarcinoma and several surgeries, who developed a progressive 3-month clinical picture of night blind

Value of vitamin A supplements in increasing macular thickness in a patient with vitamin A deficiency and nyctalopy.

Although vitamin A deficiency is a rare cause of nyctalopia, its detection is crucial since vitamin A supplementation can improve vision. This is the case of a 69-year-old woman with progressive night blindness, a past medical history of intestinal surgery, and low vitamin A levels. After vitamin A treatment, her visual acuity improved, along with an increase in macular thickness. Vitamin A is essential for photoreceptor function, and its deficiency is associated with conditions such as xerophthalmia and keratopathy. OCT proved useful in monitoring treatment response. It is important to suspec

Symptomatic vitamin A deficiency in a paediatric patient with short bowel syndrome.

Vitamin A deficiency-which leads to xerophthalmia-is rarely observed in developed countries. However, it can be triggered by malabsorption conditions such as short bowel syndrome (SBS). Herein, we present an early-adolescent boy with hypoganglionosis-related SBS receiving long-term supplemental parenteral nutrition who presented with night blindness, bilateral conjunctival xerosis and Bitot's spots. The patient's serum retinol level was 4.2 (normal: > 20) µg/dL. Thus, 100 000 IU of vitamin A was administered intramuscularly on days 1, 2 and again after 2 weeks. The ocular signs and night blind

Vitamin A Deficiency in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) can manifest as xerophthalmia, a spectrum of eye conditions ranging from night blindness to severe outcomes like keratomalacia and corneal scarring. We report two cases of a seven-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy in Japan with xerophthalmia caused by VAD associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The first case demonstrates severe complications of prolonged VAD, including optic disc edema and irreversible corneal damage, which then results in blindness. The second case identified and treated earlier in the stage of corneal xerosis shows favorable prognosis. T
