Vitamin A status in a sample of pregnant and lactating women living in several representative regions of Congo was assessed and compared between August and September 2004. This survey was conducted using a randomized two-stage cluster-sampling method with stratification on 90 clusters, each consisting of at least 15 women. Vitamin A status was determined in a total of 1,054 individuals, using the impression cytology with transfer (ICT) test, the modified relative dose response test (MRDR test) on dried blood spots (DBS), and clinical examination to detect signs of xerophthalmia. The clinical c

Vitamin A deficiency is one of the most prevalent nutritional deficiencies worldwide, mainly affecting children and women. The cause of vitamin A deficiency is insufficient intake, especially in presence of infection and the consequences of the deficiency are xerophthalmia, night blindness, anemia, increased susceptibility to infections and the still controversial increase in infant mortality. National evidence at this point is insufficient to establish the recommendation, and as in the 2000 review of the Venezuelan RDAs, the actual recommendations are based on the reported for the United Stat

Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) has been recognized as a public-health issue in developing countries. Economic constraints, sociocultural limitations, insufficient dietary intake, and poor absorption leading to depleted vitamin A stores in the body have been regarded as potential determinants of the prevalence of VAD in South Asian developing countries. VAD is exacerbated by lack of education, poor sanitation, absence of new legislation and enforcement of existing food laws, and week monitoring and surveillance system. Several recent estimates confirmed higher morbidly and mortality rate among chil

A 35-year-old woman with morbid obesity and amenorrhoea underwent a bilo-pancreatic diversion (BPD). Surgery was successful with good weight loss, restoration of menstruation and almost immediately she conceived for the first time. She was commenced on routine vitamin supplements after surgery but failed to attend follow-up clinic. Five years later, she presented with limb girdle pains, lethargy, night blindness, skin pigmentation, amenorrhoea and dizziness. She had stopped taking supplements prescribed after the surgery. Investigations showed severe vitamin A and D deficiency along with iron

BACKGROUNDS: Ethiopia has been classified by the WHO as a country where vitamin A deficiency is a public health problem. Vitamin A deficiency is labelled as a public health problem based on its extensively studied endemicity among children. Maternal vitamin A deficiency has received little attention. Thus the principal objective of this study is to assess the vitamin A status of pregnant Ethiopians based on Conjunctival Impression Cytology (CIC) and serum levels of vitamin A.
METHODS: It is a descriptive study done among women attending ANC in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy at t

BACKGROUND: Studies showed a rise in obesity prevalence in world population and evidences point to a possible association with vitamin A deficiency (VAD). The objective of this study is to assess vitamin A nutritional status through functional [night blindness diagnosis-xerophthalmia (XN)] and biochemical (serum levels and retinol liver store) indicators of class III obesity individuals and its association.
METHODS: We studied 114 patients of both genders with BMI ≥40 kg/m2, candidates to bariatric surgery at Clínica Cirúrgica Carlos Saboya in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. XN was diagnosed through

Biliopancreatic diversion is a predominantly malabsorptive bariatric procedure that can lead to the development of several nutrition complications, including fat-soluble vitamin deficiencies. Routine supplementation with vitamins and trace elements and a strict medical follow-up are essential to prevent these nutrition risks. Vitamin A deficiency is common after bariatric surgery but rarely causes clinical symptoms. Case reports have described ophthalmological and fetal complications associated with vitamin A deficiency after malabsorptive bariatric surgery. Phrynoderma is a type of follicular

BACKGROUND: Three patients with Dent's disease presented with complaints of impaired night vision or xerophthalmia and were found to have severely decreased serum retinol concentrations. Retinol, bound to its carrier retinol-binding protein (RBP), is filtered at the glomerulus and reabsorbed at the proximal tubule. We hypothesized that urinary loss of retinol-RBP complex is responsible for decreased serum retinol.
OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: The study aim was to investigate vitamin A status and RBP in serum and urine of patients with genetically confirmed Dent's disease.
RESULTS: Eight patients w

Vitamins are essential nutrients for many body functions and particularly important during growth. Adequate supply in pregnancy and in early infancy is therefore crucial, but there is still a lack of knowledge about the needed amounts of vitamins of children older than six months and also during pregnancy. Recommendations for intake levels are generally derived by extrapolation from data for infants based in turn on the contents in breast milk and those for adults. A vitamin of particular importance in pregnancy is folic acid due to its role in the development of the brain and nerve system and

Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is an important public health problem worldwide that contributes significantly to the global burden of disease. Vitamin A deficiency disorders include xerophthalmia and increased risk of infectious diseases, both of which increase risk of mortality. Xerophthalmia is also a leading cause of preventable blindness. Areas with highly prevalent VAD often share common dietary and other environmental exposures, including poverty, infectious diseases, limited development and poor availability of vitamin A containing food. Globally, the prevalence of VAD has been declining, w

PURPOSE: In the Kaduna State Nigeria Onchocerciasis focus, the prevalence of reported night blindness (RNB) was 12.9%, higher than the national average (1%), and a control non-onchocercal community (0.83%, P < 0.0001). Risk factors for RNB were explored.
METHODS: This was an analysis of baseline data from the phase three ivermectin trials in Kaduna (1988-1995). 6831 subjects in the onchocercal zone and 1563 in the control zone were examined. Ordinal logistic regression was used to assess the relationship between microfilaria load (uninfected, low (<10 mf/mg), moderate (10-49 mf/mg) and high (
