Loss of the vitamin A receptor RBPR2 in mice disrupts whole-body retinoid homeostasis and the quantitative balance regulating retinylidene protein synthesis.

The distribution of stored dietary vitamin A/all-trans-retinol (ROL) from the liver throughout the body is critical for maintaining retinoid function in peripheral tissues and for generating visual pigments for photoreceptor cell function. ROL circulates in the blood bound to the retinol binding protein 4 (RBP4) as RBP4-ROL. Two membrane receptors, RBPR2 in the liver and other non-ocular tissues, and STRA6 in the eye are proposed to bind circulatory RBP4 and this mechanism facilitates the internalization of ROL. Herein, we conducted a longitudinal study to investigate the importance of RBPR2 a

Vitamin A Deficiency in Children With Neurodevelopmental Disorders: Case Reports of Ocular and Urinary Tract Complications in Two Patients.

Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is a nutritional disorder that is predominantly observed in developing countries due to malnutrition. However, it can also occur in developed countries, particularly in children with neurodevelopmental disorders associated with avoidant and restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) or malabsorption. The clinical manifestations of VAD include ocular complications, such as night blindness, xerophthalmia, and keratomalacia, as well as systemic effects, including impaired immunity, growth retardation, and increased susceptibility to infections. While there has been notabl

Implications of Celiac Disease in Prospective Corneal Refractive Surgery Patients: A Narrative Review.

Celiac disease (CeD) is a prevalent autoimmune disorder incited by gluten consumption, resulting in intestinal damage. Affecting approximately one in 133 people globally, CeD often remains undiagnosed due to its varied clinical presentations. The prevalence and diagnosis of CeD are influenced by several factors, including demographics and genetics, and it often coexists with other autoimmune diseases. Thus, the objective of this paper was to review the literature on ophthalmic manifestations of CeD and to create preliminary considerations for these patients wishing to undergo elective corneal

Vitamin a Deficiency in an Elderly Patient: A Diagnostic Challenge in the Age of AMD.

The presentation of vitamin A deficiency (VAD)-induced ocular complications can be challenging to diagnose in elderly patients, particularly due to the overlap with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) symptoms. This case report details the presentation, diagnosis, and management of an 88-year-old female with vision loss, highlighting the ocular manifestations of presumed VAD. Despite vitamin A levels being at the lower end of the normal range, the patient's symptoms and spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) findings suggested insufficient levels, leading to thinning of the o

Clinical, genetic and biochemical signatures of RBP4-related ocular malformations.

BACKGROUND: The retinoic acid (RA) pathway plays a crucial role in both eye morphogenesis and the visual cycle. Individuals with monoallelic and biallelic pathogenic variants in retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4), encoding a serum retinol-specific transporter, display variable ocular phenotypes. Although few families have been reported worldwide, recessive inherited variants appear to be associated with retinal degeneration, while individuals with dominantly inherited variants manifest ocular development anomalies, mainly microphthalmia, anophthalmia and coloboma (MAC). METHODS: We report here

Bilateral Keratomalacia Secondary to Diet Induced Vitamin A Deficiency in an Ethiopian Young woman: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Diet induced vitamin A deficiency is less commonly seen in otherwise healthy adults, due to large store of vitamin A in the body. Night blindness is the commonest manifestation of vitamin A deficiency in adults, whereas Keratomalacia is a rare manifestation. CASE REPORT: A 27 years old Ethiopian woman came to Jimma University Department of Ohthalmology with a compliant of protrusion of the globe content of both eyes within a week, after having redness and fear of light of both eyes for 2 months. She was a mother of twins and had low socioeconomic status. On general examination, sh

Pattern of ocular morbidities: A cross-sectional study on school-going children in Shillong city.

INTRODUCTION: India is plagued by ocular morbidities in school-children. However, there exists paucity of studies, school health check-ups, and health education in the north-eastern region. This study aimed at estimating the prevalence and pattern of various ocular morbidities in school-going children of Shillong. METHODOLOGY: It was a school-based cross-sectional study done in Shillong, Meghalaya among 540 school-going children from class VI to X. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 23. RESULTS: The most common ocular morbidity was refractive error (57.4%) followed by vitamin A deficiency

Pediatric Pseudotumor Cerebri Associated With Low Serum Levels of Vitamin A.

The aim of this study was to describe the association between pediatric pseudotumor cerebri and low serum vitamin A levels. We retrospectively reviewed the charts of 6 children (5 boys, 1 girl; mean age 8 years) with increased intracranial pressure and low serum vitamin A levels (mean 16.0 ± 8.8 µg/dL). The etiology of the vitamin A deficiency was a restricted diet (2 children), intestinal malabsorption caused by celiac disease (2 children), and undetermined cause (2 children). Only 1 child had ocular signs of xerosis. Poor visual acuity at presentation and lower serum vitamin A levels were as

[Ocular manifestations associated with vitamin A deficiency in a rural area of Burkina Faso].

Vitamin A deficiency can cause nyctalopia, hemeralopia, xerophthalmia, and even blindness. Studies have demonstrated the extent of this problem in various regions of Burkina Faso but extrapolation of these findings to other countries is difficult because of methodological problems. In the initial phase of study, signs of hemeralopia were noted in 14 of 466 children between the ages of 6 and 14, indicating an incidence of 3 p. 100 in this age group. In the second phase, examination of 281 subjects of all ages from 30 randomly selected families in the same village indicated that the incidence of

Vitamin A deficiency disorders.

The major cause of blindness in children worldwide is xerophthalmia caused by vitamin A deficiency. In addition it has other adverse effects, including increased mortality and the term vitamin A deficiency disorders (VADD) has been introduced to cover the whole clinical spectrum of disease. The ocular manifestations of xerophthalmia have been classified and a set of prevalence criteria for the detection of a problem of public health magnitude has been in use for more than two decades. The global prevalence of VADD is now well documented and World Health Organisation (WHO) receives information

Aetiology of severe vitamin A deficiency in children.

BACKGROUND: Severe forms of vitamin A deficiency or keratomalacia are common in young children. Keratomalacia is thought to be associated with malnutrition due to poor weaning practices and manifests at 3 to 4 years of age. As survival rates for infants have increased, keratomalacia is being seen in children less than 6 months of age. Hence, keratomalacia shows two peaks--one in early infancy and the other in the toddler or pre-school age groups. However, the reasons for its occurrence at these ages may be different. METHODS: Records of children admitted to the Nutrition Rehabilitation Centre

Nutritional ocular diseases and their association with diarrhoea in Matlab, Bangladesh.

The prevalence of visual defects, especially from causes associated with nutritional deficiencies, and their relation to diarrhoea in rural Bangladesh have been studied. A trained physician and a team of health workers examined visual defects in 149 villages, with a total population of 182 976. According to WHO classification, night blindness (XN) was found in only 0.03 persons/1000 population and 0.04 were found to have conjunctival xerosis (XIA) and Bitot's spot (XIB). Corneal xerosis (X2, X3A, X3B) also was found in 0.04 persons/1000. Night blindness combined with conjunctival xerosis and B
