Food Insecurity, Anemia and Vitamin A Deficiency in Brazilian Children Aged between 6 and 59 Months of Age: Brazilian National Survey on Child Nutrition (ENANI-2019).

BACKGROUND: Anemia and vitamin A deficiency (VAD) can be related to poverty and food insecurity (FI), which can increase risk of stunting and delayed child development. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to assess the association between FI and the occurrence of anemia and VAD in Brazilian children aged 6-59 months. METHODS: Data from 6020 children from the Brazilian National Survey on Child Nutrition (2019) were used. FI was assessed using the Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale, classifying households into food security (FS) and FI levels. The outcomes were anemia [hemoglobin <10.5 g/dL (6-23 months)

Causal Links Between Gut Microbiota and Vitamin Deficiencies: Evidence from Mendelian Randomization Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Vitamin deficiencies, particularly in vitamins A, B12, and D, are prevalent across populations and contribute significantly to a range of health issues. While these deficiencies are well documented, the underlying etiology remains complex. Recent studies suggest a close link between the gut microbiota and the synthesis, absorption, and metabolism of these vitamins. However, the specific causal relationships between the gut microbiota composition and vitamin deficiencies remain poorly understood. Identifying key bacterial species and understanding their role in vitamin metabolism cou

Vitamin A fortification: key factors and considerations for effective implementation.

Vitamin A fortification plays a crucial role in achieving long-term economic development in developing countries by supporting the growth and development of human capital. While fortification programs involve a range of nutritional, agricultural, economic, and political considerations, there is a lack of a comprehensive overview of the topic in the literature. Our review highlights the importance of holistic approach in designing fortification programs: the effective program should consider (a) the agronomic, economic, and administrative capability of the target regions in regard of fortificat

Subclinical vitamin A deficiency and associated factors among pregnant women in eastern Ethiopia.

INTRODUCTION: Vitamin A is essential for maternal and child health and plays a key role in reducing maternal and child mortality rates. A need exists for more evidence on the prevalence and associated factors of Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) among pregnant women in rural, underserved areas, such as eastern Ethiopia, where many risk factors for VAD may be concentrated. METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted with 397 randomly selected pregnant women at the Haramaya University Demographic Health Surveillance sites. Data were collected through structured questionnaires, anthr

Vitamin A supplementation coverage and its associated factors among children 6-59 months of age in Ethiopia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin A supplementation is a key strategy for preventing the consequences of vitamin A deficiency and childhood illnesses, notably in countries where vitamin A deficiency is a public health issue. However, studies in Ethiopia are inconsistent. Hence, this meta-analysis assessed coverage of vitamin A supplementation and associated factors among children aged 6-59 months in Ethiopia. METHODS: A search of articles from databases (PubMed, Science Direct, African Index Medicus, and HINARI), and search engines (Google Scholar, Google, and Worldwide Science) was done. All observational

Trends in burden and mortality of congenital birth defects in G20 countries (1990-2021) and predictions for 2022-2040.

OBJECTIVES: Congenital birth defects (CBDs) rank among the top five causes of death in children under the age of five. Despite their significant impact, studies on the burden of CBDs in G20 countries remain limited. This study sought to examine the temporal trends in the disease burden and mortality rates of CBDs across G20 countries from 1990 to 2021, identify potential risk factors contributing to these trends, and project the disease burden and mortality rates for the period 2022-2040. METHOD: Data for this study were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021 and GBD 2019 datab

Agroforestry for Food Security and Public Health: A Comprehensive Review.

Global food systems face mounting pressure from intersecting crises of food insecurity, malnutrition (affecting over 2.8 billion people), and climate change, necessitating transformative solutions. Agroforestry systems (AFS), integrating trees with crops and/or livestock, offer a promising pathway by synergistically enhancing food production, ecological stability, and public health outcomes. However, realizing this potential is hindered by gaps in understanding the complex interactions and trade-offs between these domains, limiting policy and practice effectiveness. This comprehensive review a

The field-ready tea-box adaptometer: colonial nutrition science and/in imperial economies in Malawi.

In the late 1930s, children in three Malawian villages were subjected to a peculiar test for vitamin A deficiency devised by Dr. Benjamin Platt, director of the Nyasaland Nutrition Survey and a leading colonial nutrition scientist. Platt constructed a makeshift adaptometer, appropriate for field conditions, that could be placed over a subject's head to measure retinal adaptation to light. He built this contraption from simple materials, including a five-pound tea-box and sticking plaster. This article takes the curious commingling of commodity objects and scientific materials (where a discarde

Dual Behavioral-Physiological Buffering of Mothers' Milk Facilitates Drought Adaptability of Pastoralists and Agropastoralists in Northern Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Mothers physiologically buffer key milk nutrient content against nutritional stress. How this is nested in upstream behavioral buffering is not well understood. OBJECTIVES: The study explored whether pastoralists and agropastoralists' economic or other behavioral coping strategies against droughts, such as livestock sales and child fosterage, influence maternal risk for malnutrition or milk nutrient content. METHODS: Using data from 221 breastfeeding mothers in drought-stricken northern Kenya, we estimated generalized structural equation models to evaluate pathways linking behavi

Impacts of a Homestead Food Production Intervention on Anaemia and Micronutrient Deficiencies Among Women and Children in Rural Bangladesh: A Cluster-Randomized Controlled Trial.

Micronutrient deficiencies affect over half of young children and two-thirds of reproductive-aged women worldwide. Nutrition-sensitive agriculture interventions have the potential to increase nutrient-dense food intake and thus improve micronutrient status. We evaluated the impact of a homestead food production (HFP) programme on micronutrient status and anaemia of women and their children (registered secondary outcomes) in the Food and Agricultural Approaches to Reducing Malnutrition (FAARM) trial, additionally assessing its impact on inflammation. We conducted a 1:1 parallel two-arm cluster-

Association Between Low Serum Vitamin A Level and Diabetic Retinopathy in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes: A Hospital-Based Study.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) has been shown to be associated with diabetic retinopathy (DR). However, only a small number of studies have examined the association between VAD and DR in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). The aim of this study was therefore to determine the association between serum vitamin A level and DR in T2DM patients. METHODS: From 2019 to 2024, information was retrospectively collected on 470 healthy controls and 1020 patients with T2DM (500 without DR and 520 with DR). Inclusion criteria included those older than 30 years and having undergone retinal examina

Genetic and environmental factors contributing to anophthalmia and microphthalmia: Current understanding and future directions.

Anophthalmia is defined as a complete absence of one eye or both the eyes, while microphthalmia represents the presence of a small eye within the orbit. The estimated birth prevalence for anophthalmia is approximately 3 per 100000 live births, and for microphthalmia, it is around 14 per 100000 live births. However, combined evidence suggests that the prevalence of these malformations could be as high as 30 per 100000 individuals. Microphthalmia is reported to occur in 3.2% to 11.2% of blind children. Anophthalmia and microphthalmia (A/M) are part of a phenotypic spectrum alongside ocular colob

Field selection of elite events of East African highland bananas expressing elevated levels of pro-vitamin A.

Biofortification of staple crops is a sustainable strategy to deliver essential micronutrients to impoverished populations in developing countries. Banana is a highly valued crop consumed by over 75% of Ugandans. However, the starchy green cooking bananas have very low levels of pro-vitamin A (PVA) and heavy dietary reliance on them has been associated with vitamin A deficiency (VAD). Two banana cultivars, hybrid M9 and Nakitembe, were selected for PVA biofortification. A phytoene synthase 2a (MtPsy2a) gene was transformed into the selected cultivars under the control of the constitutive maize
