Pyridoxine is a co-factor in many enzymatic reactions and impacts of deficiency have been observed in affected populations. A possible modifying effect of pyridoxine deficiency on benzene toxicity was assessed in male B6C3F1 mice fed either a pyridoxine-deficient diet or a control diet. This treatment was combined with benzene inhalation exposure (100 ppm) or no benzene treatment. Pyridoxine-deficient mice exposed to 100 ppm benzene had significantly lower body, thymus and spleen weights. While total white blood cell counts, percentage of lymphocytes, hematocrit and hemoglobin levels were lowe

Pyridoxine, one of the vitamin B6 vitamers, plays a crucial role in amino acid metabolism and synthesis of monoamines as a cofactor. In the present study, we observed the effects of pyridoxine deficiency on novel object recognition memory. In addition, we examined the levels of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), 3,4-dihydroxyphenethylamine (DA), 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid, and homovanillic acid and the number of proliferating cells and neuroblasts in the hippocampus. We also examined the effects of pyridoxine deficiency on protein profiles applying a proteomic

The effects of dietary pyridoxine (PN) on the gill immunity, apoptosis, antioxidant and tight junction of grass cap (Ctenopharyngodon idella) were investigated in this study. Fish were fed semi-purified diets containing graded levels of PN for 10 weeks, and then challenged with Flavobacterium columnare by bath immersion exposure for 3 days. The results indicated that compared with the optimal PN level, PN deficiency resulted in a decline in the antimicrobial compound production of gill. In addition, PN deficiency up-regulated the pro-inflammatory cytokines and down-regulated the anti-inflammat

We investigated the effects of pyridoxine deficiency on ischemic neuronal death in the hippocampus of gerbil (n = 5 per group). Serum pyridoxal 5'-phosphate levels were significantly decreased in Pyridoxine-deficient diet (PDD)-fed gerbils, while homocysteine levels were significantly increased in sham- and ischemia-operated gerbils. PDD-fed gerbil showed a reduction in neuronal nuclei (NeuN)-immunoreactive neurons in the medial part of the hippocampal CA1 region three days after. Reactive astrocytosis and microgliosis were found in PDD-fed gerbils, and transient ischemia caused the aggregatio

Pyridoxine is an important co-factor for many biochemical reactions in cellular metabolism related to the synthesis and catabolism of amino acids, fatty acids, neurotransmitters. Deficiency of pyridoxine results in impaired transcellular signaling between neurons and presents with muscular convulsions, hyperirritability, and peripheral neuropathy. Deficiency of pyridoxine is usually found in association with other vitamin B deficiencies such as folate (vitamin B9) and cobalamin (vitamin B12). Isolated pyridoxine deficiency is extremely rare. We present the case of a 59-year old female with typ

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression is a common psychiatric complaint of women following delivery and a multitude of psychosocial, maternal, newborn and husband-related factors were contributing to it. This condition has a detrimental impact on the mother-infant caregiving relationship and hastens the infant's cognitive, emotional and social development. However, a shortage of empirical evidence existed especially in developing countries including Ethiopia. Therefore, we implemented this study to determine the magnitude of postpartum depression and its correlates.
METHODS: A cross-sectional sur

Biallelic pathogenic variants in PLPBP (formerly called PROSC) have recently been shown to cause a novel form of vitamin B6-dependent epilepsy, the pathophysiological basis of which is poorly understood. When left untreated, the disease can progress to status epilepticus and death in infancy. Here we present 12 previously undescribed patients and six novel pathogenic variants in PLPBP. Suspected clinical diagnoses prior to identification of PLPBP variants included mitochondrial encephalopathy (two patients), folinic acid-responsive epilepsy (one patient) and a movement disorder compatible with

INTRODUCTION: Sideroblastic anemia is a rare cause of microcytic anemia, which is characterized by ring sideroblasts on bone marrow aspirate. This anemia can be congenital or acquired.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of an alcoholic 49-year-old man who presented with a severe microcytic sideroblastic anemia related to pyridoxine (B6 vitamin) deficiency. Acid folic deficiency was associated. The blood count normalized within one month after vitamin supplementation.
CONCLUSION: Pyridoxine deficiency must be sought in sideroblastic anemia in patients at risk.

Pyridoxine-dependent epilepsy (PDE) is a genetic metabolic disease caused by inborn errors affecting vitamin B6 metabolism, which typically presents with neonatal seizures resistant to antiepileptic drugs (AEDs). Treatment with pyridoxine terminates seizures and prevents neurological decline. We describe a case in which the diagnosis was established at the age of 22 years. Birth and development were normal, but there was a history of three isolated tonic-clonic seizures during childhood and adolescence. At the age of 18 years, she developed frequent focal motor seizures, many evolving into ton

BACKGROUND: Hyperprolinemia type 2 (HPII) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder of the proline metabolism, that affects the ALDH4A1 gene. So far only four different pathogenic mutations are known. The manifestation is mostly in neonatal age, in early infancy or early childhood.
CASE PRESENTATION: The 64-years female patient had a long history of abdominal pain, and episode of an acute neuritis. Ten years later she was admitted into the neurological intensive-care-unit with acute abdominal pain, multiple generalized epileptic seizures, a vertical gaze palsy accompanied by extensive lactic aci

BACKGROUND: Although low alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels have been associated with poor outcomes in the elderly population, the determinants subtending this association have been poorly explored. To gain insight into this topic, we analyzed data from a prospective population-based database (InCHIANTI study) in which frailty, disability, sarcopenia, and pyridoxine levels were systematically assessed.
METHODS: Data are from 765 participants aged more than 65 years (mean age 75.3 years, women 61.8%), without chronic liver disease, malignancies, or alcohol abuse. Frailty was defined accordi

The aim of this study was to assess the effects of dietary pyridoxine (PN) deficiency on intestinal antioxidant capacity, cell apoptosis and intercellular tight junction in young grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella). A total of 540 young grass carp (231.85 ± 0.63 g) were fed six diets containing graded levels of PN (0.12-7.48 mg/kg diet) for 10 weeks. At the end of the feeding trial, the fish were challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila for 2 weeks. The results showed that compared with the optimal PN level, PN deficiency (1) increased the contents of reactive oxygen species (ROS), malondialdehyd

West syndrome (WS) is an early life epileptic encephalopathy associated with infantile spasms, interictal electroencephalography (EEG) abnormalities including high amplitude, disorganized background with multifocal epileptic spikes (hypsarrhythmia), and often neurodevelopmental impairments. Approximately 64% of the patients have structural, metabolic, genetic, or infectious etiologies and, in the rest, the etiology is unknown. Here we review the contribution of etiologies due to various metabolic disorders in the pathology of WS. These may include metabolic errors in organic molecules involved

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article provides an update on the clinical presentation and management of neurologic disease related to key nutrient deficiencies.
RECENT FINDINGS: Major advances have been made in understanding the pathway related to vitamin B12 absorption and distribution. It is now known that deficiencies of vitamin B12 and copper have similar neurologic manifestations. Bariatric surgery is a risk factor for both. Alcoholism is just one of the many causes of thiamine deficiency. Early neurologic complications following bariatric surgery are often due to thiamine deficiency. Encephal

BACKGROUND: Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) is commonly used to provide renal replacement therapy in the intensive care unit. Limited published data suggest that CRRT may lead to depletion of water-soluble vitamins and trace elements. The goal of this study was to identify the incidence of trace element and vitamin deficiencies in critically ill patients during CRRT.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study is based on a retrospective chart review of patients who were referred to Emory University Hospital's nutrition support services and had at least 1 serum micronutrient level measured
