Vitamin C deficiency can lead to pulmonary hypertension: a systematic review of case reports.

BACKGROUND: In the early literature, unintentional vitamin C deficiency in humans was associated with heart failure. Experimental vitamin C deficiency in guinea pigs caused enlargement of the heart. The purpose of this study was to collect and analyze case reports on vitamin C and pulmonary hypertension. METHODS: We searched Pubmed and Scopus for case studies in which vitamin C deficiency was considered to be the cause of pulmonary hypertension. We selected reports in which pulmonary hypertension was diagnosed by echocardiography or catheterization, for any age, sex, or dosage of vitamin C. W

Vitamin C and Thiamin Deficiencies in Patients Undergoing Laparoscopic and Robotic Gastric Band Removal.

Outcomes after adjustable gastric banding (AGB) were unsatisfactory and many devices need to be removed for dysphagia. Vitamin C and thiamin deficiency are rare conditions in industrialized countries. Patients undergoing AGB removal (90% for dysphagia) from 2021 to 2023 (laparoscopic 15 and robotic 5) were tested for vitamin C and thiamin levels. Twenty patients (8 m/12 f median aged 56 (range 33.6-79.4) were included. BMI at AGB removal was 39.7 (range 24.4-50.1) kg/m2. Only 20% of patients had normal thiamin levels, 30% had low levels, 20% were deficient, and 30% were critically low. Only 25

Mucosal bleeding while on venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in the setting of vitamin C deficiency.

A major complication with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is bleeding which can occur in up to 40% of cases and can be life-threatening. Minor bleeding may be overlooked and under-reported. While some of the underlying mechanisms such as platelet injury and anticoagulation therapy have been identified, several other factors are still under-researched. Here, we describe a unique case of a subtle mucosal membrane bleeding that is found to be associated with vitamin C deficiency while on treatment with ECMO. Investigating vitamin C levels may be useful in understanding causes of bleedi

The association of combined vitamin C and D deficiency with bone mineral density and vertebral fracture.

PURPOSE: Both vitamin C and D deficiencies are extremely common in clinical practice, especially in elderly population. Unfortunately, the role of vitamin C deficiency in osteoporosis related consequences is often neglected. The aim of the present study is to analyse if combined vitamin C and D deficiency would have an association with bone mineral density (BMD) and osteoporotic vertebral fracture (OVF). METHODS: Ninety-nine post-menopausal female patients admitted in the department of spine surgery of third affiliated hospital of Sun Yat-sen University were enrolled in the study. The partici

Understanding the additional impact of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes mellitus on vitamin C requirements in people living with obesity.

Obesity and diabetes are known to negatively affect vitamin C status. However, whether the presence of diabetes, in addition to obesity, contributes an additional impact on vitamin C status is currently uncertain. In a cohort of 152 adults living with obesity, we assessed metabolic and nutrient parameters in participants without diabetes (n = 92), and with prediabetes (n = 22) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM; n = 35). Vitamin C concentrations were measured in plasma and leukocytes using HPLC and vitamin C intakes were assessed using 24-hour dietary recall. Metabolic severity scores were der

Prevalence of vitamin C deficiency and its association with stroke risk among U.S. adult population: A cross-sectional analysis spanning 15 years with over 13,000 participants.

Background: Stroke presents a significant global health challenge. Despite its potential for cardiovascular protection, the role of vitamin C (VTMC) in stroke risk remains contentious. Aim: This study aimed to assess VTMC deficiency in stroke patients and its association with stroke risk. Methods: We analyzed data from 13,339 adults aged 20 and above in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2003 and 2018, excluding those with missing serum VTMC and stroke status. We assessed the VTMC deficiency (<11.4 µmol/L) and stroke incidence association using multivariate w

Exploring the relationship between vitamin C deficiency and protein-energy malnutrition in adult hospitalised patients: A cross-sectional study.

AIMS: To explore the prevalence of vitamin C deficiency, 'undetectable' vitamin C status, and scurvy features, in adult hospitalised patients with protein-energy malnutrition diagnosed using validated malnutrition screening and assessment tools commonly used in clinical practice. METHODS: This study included adult inpatients from four acute hospitals within a single Australian tertiary health service, over a 3.5-year period. A medical file review activity retrospectively determined malnutrition risk and diagnosis, via Malnutrition Screening Tool, Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool, Subject

Oral Manifestations of Vitamin C Deficiency in a Toddler.

Vitamin C deficiency, colloquially known as scurvy, has become rare in modern times due to the widespread availability of ascorbic acid-rich foods. Despite this, it continues to be a concern in certain at-risk populations. The purpose of this report is to describe the case of a two-year-old girl who initially presented to a pediatric dental clinic with the chief complaint of hypertrophic gingiva and bleeding. Suspecting a systemic cause, the dental team referred the patient to a hematology clinic for further evaluation. Subsequent assessments and laboratory work confirmed a diagnosis of diet-r

Mesoscopic structural analysis via deep learning processing, with a special reference to in vitro alteration in collagen fibre induced by a gap junction inhibitor.

Dense connective tissue, including the ligament, tendon, fascia and cornea, is formed by regularly arranged collagen fibres synthesized by fibroblasts (Fbs). The mechanism by which fibre orientation is determined remains unclear. Periodontal ligament Fbs consistently communicate with their surroundings via gap junctions (GJs), leading to the formation of a wide cellular network. A method to culture Fb-synthesized collagen fibres was previously reported by Schafer et al. ('Ascorbic acid deficiency in cultured human fibroblasts'. J. Cell Biol. 34: 83-95, 1967). This method has been applied to in

Technical note: The use and misuse of threshold diagnostic criteria in paleopathology.

Weighted threshold diagnostic criteria approaches have emerged for diseases that involve skeletal/bony tissue that are readily diagnosed in the field of paleopathology such as Vitamin C deficiency (scurvy), Vitamin D deficiency (rickets) and treponemal disease. These criteria differ from traditional differential diagnosis in that they involve standardized inclusion criteria based on the lesion's specificity to the disease. Here I discuss the limitations and benefits of threshold criteria. I argue that while these criteria will benefit from further revision such as inclusion of lesion severity,

Vitamin C deficiency in osteogenic disorder Shionogi/Shi Jcl-od/od rats: effects on sour taste preferences, lick rates, chorda tympani nerve responses, and taste transduction elements.

Animals use sour taste to avoid spoiled food and to choose foods containing vitamins and minerals. To investigate the response to sour taste substances during vitamin C (ascorbic acid; AA) deficiency, we conducted behavioral, neural, anatomical, and molecular biological experiments with osteogenic disorder Shionogi/Shi Jcl-od/od rats, which lack the ability to synthesize AA. Rats had higher 3 mM citric acid and 10 mM AA preference scores when AA-deficient than when replete. Licking rates for sour taste solutions [AA, citric acid, acetic acid, tartaric acid, and HCl] were significantly increase

Mild Vitamin C Deficiency Is Common in the Inpatient Psychiatric Setting.

Objective: Mild vitamin C deficiency is a psychiatrically relevant nutritional state, with symptoms including apathy, fatigue, and low mood. Although complete vitamin C deficiency has largely been eradicated, mild deficiency remains common in certain populations. Here, we aimed to identify the prevalence of mild vitamin C deficiency in the inpatient psychiatric setting. Methods: We identified 221 patients with plasma vitamin C levels collected on an inpatient psychiatric unit serving a metropolitan area between January 1, 2015, and March 7, 2022. We identified demographic (age, sex, race, hous

A Case of Scurvy in a Child: An Uncommon but Important Diagnosis to Consider.

Scurvy is a rare disease resulting from a prolonged ascorbic acid deficiency. It commonly affects individuals with low incomes and limited access to fresh fruits and vegetables. The diagnosis of scurvy can be challenging for clinicians due to the non-specific symptoms, resulting in extensive investigations and a delayed diagnosis. We report the case of a 14-year-old girl who presented with symptoms of pallor, bone pain, inability to walk, petechiae, ecchymosis of the lower limbs, irritability, and swollen, bleeding gums. Initially, the symptoms raised suspicions of hematopoietic malignancies,

Vitamin C Deficiency Deteriorates Bone Microarchitecture and Mineralization in a Sex-Specific Manner in Adult Mice.

Vitamin C (VitC) is essential for bone health, and low VitC serum levels increase the risk for skeletal fractures. If and how VitC affects bone mineralization is unclear. Using micro-computed tomography (μCT), histologic staining, as well as quantitative backscattered electron imaging (qBEI), we assessed the effects of VitC on femoral structure and microarchitecture, bone formation, and bone mineralization density distribution (BMDD) in the VitC incompetent Gulo-/- mouse model and wild-type mice. In particular, VitC-supplemented, 20-week-old mice were compared with age-matched counterparts whe

Ascorbic acid intake during pregnancy.

The continuing global increase in allergic conditions and diseases in children is now a serious public health and scientific issue. Amongst other concerns is the maternal antenatal diet as intake of essential nutrients. Even small deficits in essential vitamin C can permanently impair the developing brain for example. In this article, we first review ascorbic acid deficiency in different organs of both mother and foetus. However, major emphasis is on the importance of vitamin C in foetal immunity with studies showing an inverse relationship between maternal intake of fresh fruit and vegetables

25 year experience of patterns of plasma vitamin C levels in patients requiring home parenteral support.

OBJECTIVE: Vitamin C deficiency is common in patients with chronic intestinal failure. Risk factors are poorly understood and guidelines for monitoring largely based on expert opinion. The aim of this study was to describe patterns of vitamin C deficiency in patients on long-term home parenteral support (HPS). DESIGN: A retrospective review of a prospectively collated database for 236 HPS patients cared for in Glasgow, from 1998 to 2023, was interrogated for subjects with paired CRP and vitamin C measurements. Following analysis of the impact of CRP on vitamin C levels, further review of asso

A Rare Presentation of Scurvy in a Well-Nourished Patient.

Vitamin C deficiency, otherwise known as scurvy, is a rare diagnosis among populations with adequate nutritional resources. We present a 37-year-old female patient with bilateral lower extremity edema, episodic anasarca, petechiae, and easy bruising who was diagnosed with scurvy. Given the clinical presentation, a broad differential was investigated with no findings suggestive of hematologic or cardiovascular pathology. Initial laboratory studies were unremarkable. Progression of cutaneous symptoms and subsequent laboratory findings demonstrating low vitamin C levels supported a diagnosis of s

Infantile scurvy as a consequence of agricultural intensification in the 1st millennium BCE Etruria Campana.

The 1st millennium BCE in Italy was a time of agricultural intensification of staple cereal production which shaped sociocultural, political, and economic spheres of pre-Roman groups. The lifeways and foodways of the Etruscans, the greatest civilization in western Europe before Roman hegemony, are traditionally inferred from secondary written sources, funerary archaeology, archaeobotany, and zooarchaeology. However, no direct data extrapolated from the study of human skeletal remains are available to evaluate the extent to which agricultural intensification and decreased dietary diversity impa

Release of SMP30 in Extracellular Vesicles under Conditions of Ascorbic Acid Deficiency Is Involved with Acute Phase Response in ODS Rat.

Senescence marker protein-30 (SMP30) is a senescence marker molecule that exhibits lactonase activity in the ascorbic acid (AsA) biosynthesis pathway, except in primate mammals, including humans. Although numerous studies have shown that hepatic AsA deficiency causes acute-phase responses, details of the relationship between SMP30 expression and acute-phase responses in AsA-deficient conditions remain to be elucidated. Here, we investigated the effects of AsA deficiency on the relationship between SMP30 and acute liver injury in osteogenic disorder Shionogi (ODS) rats, which have a hereditary
