The role of vitamin D deficiency in fetal growth restriction: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Fetal Growth Restriction (FGR) and Small-for-Gestational-Age (SGA) are major contributors to perinatal morbidity and mortality. Maternal vitamin D deficiency has been proposed to impair placental development and fetal growth through mechanisms involving angiogenesis, immune regulation, and oxidative stress. Increasing evidence suggests that maternal 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] status may play a significant role in the pathogenesis of impaired fetal growth. OBJECTIVE: To synthesize evidence on the association between maternal 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations and the r

Dilated cardiomyopathy and cardiogenic shock in a toddler with vitamin D deficiency: a case report.

Vitamin D deficiency is a common nutritional problem in exclusively breastfed infants. Dilated cardiomyopathy is a rare but potentially fatal complication of this condition. We describe a 15-month-old who presented with cardiogenic shock. Laboratory and radiographic findings were consistent with vitamin D deficiency. Metabolic parameters normalised within one week and echocardiography normalised by 19 months after supplementation. Although rare, severe vitamin D deficiency must be on the differential for young children presenting with new-onset dilated cardiomyopathy. Clinicians must maintain

A U-shaped association between vitamin D and ketone levels in type 2 diabetes: a metabolic state-dependent dual regulation mechanism.

BACKGROUND: Beyond bone health, vitamin D plays a pivotal role in glucose and lipid homeostasis. Vitamin D deficiency is prevalent in type 2 diabetes (T2DM), potentially exacerbating β-cell dysfunction and dysregulated energy substrate utilization. This study aimed to characterize the complex, potentially non-linear relationship between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D], β-hydroxybutyrate (β-OHB), and pancreatic β-cell reserve. METHODS: Hospitalized T2DM patients were enrolled, excluding those with acute complications or severe organ dysfunction. C-peptide area under the curve (AUC₀–₃h) from

Osteoarthritic knee: Advances in Epidemiology, Emerging Etiopathologies and Adipose-Derived Stem Cells-based Therapies.

Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a degenerative disorder that affects the joint in a non-uniform and focal manner. It is characterized by the loss of hyaline articular cartilage, along with bony remodeling, capsular stretching, and weakness of periarticular muscles. It could be ascribed to etiological factors that are modifiable (obesity, joint injury, occupational hazards, physical inactivity), non-modifiable (age, female gender, and genetic predisposition, racial/ethnic differences), or emerging, such as high blood pressure, vitamin D deficiency, and metabolic syndrome, which might contribute to

Association of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D and homocysteine "double-risk" status with executive dysfunction in older adults with hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Executive dysfunction is common in adults with hypertension and undermines self-management. Low 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and elevated homocysteine may damage the endothelium and white matter, while their non-linear dose-response and joint effects on executive dysfunction are unclear. METHODS: We conducted a single-center, prospective, cross-sectional study of inpatients aged ≥60 years with hypertension (November 2023-July 2024). Exposures were vitamin D deficiency [25(OH)D < 20 ng/mL] and hyperhomocysteinemia (hymocysteine ≥15 μmol/L), combined into a four-level dual-risk var

Association of Serum Vitamin D Status with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: An Experience from a Tertiary Level Specialized Diabetic Hospital in Bangladesh.

In recent years, there has been increased interest to find the association between gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and serum vitamin D status. Pregnant women all over the world have a substantial frequency of vitamin D insufficiency. There is much significant evidence that low vitamin D levels may be modifiable risk factors for GDM. The aim of the present study was to evaluate serum vitamin D status and observe its association with GDM. This cross-sectional study was conducted in the department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of BIRDEM General Hospital, Dhaka, Bangladesh from July 20

Unexplained Hyponatremia Revealing Vitamin D Deficiency: A Clinical Case Report.

"SIAD" (syndrome of inappropriate antidiuresis) is frequently encountered in clinical practice, often necessitating the exclusion of various differential diagnoses and involving expensive treatments. In cases of SIAD concomitant with vitamin D deficiency, treatment with vitamin D supplementation may not only correct hyponatremia but also improve accompanying clinical findings, offering a cost-effective alternative for clinicians. A 52-year-old Caucasian Turkish white male presented to the emergency department with symptoms of nausea, weakness, and altered consciousness. The patient was euvolem

Association Between Serum Vitamin D Levels and Mortality in Children Receiving Chronic Dialysis: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent among children on regular dialysis, affecting approximately 90% of patients. This deficiency (serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D < 50 nmol/L or 20 ng/mL) is associated with various complications, including skeletal problems, increased infection risk, arterial stiffness, vascular calcification, and higher cardiovascular mortality. Severe deficiency (< 30 nmol/L) particularly increases mortality risks. METHOD: In this cross-sectional retrospective study, we examined 53 pediatric patients (28 boys, 25 girls) undergoing regular dialysis (hemodialysis an

Too much vitamin D? a drug safety review.

Vitamin D is an essential pro-hormone that helps to regulate mineral metabolism and skeletal health. Epidemiological data suggest that many individuals have insufficient serum levels of 25-hydroxy vitamin D, the marker of vitamin D status, for most of the year. Recognition of this observation has led to replacement regimens for vitamin D that have often led to its overuse even in disorders not related to bone homeostasis. Since vitamin D toxicity is rare, safety issues related to vitamin D supplementation have not been carefully addressed recently. Overall safety issues related to administrati

Exploring the interplay of vitamin D, salivary antimicrobial peptides, and cytokines in oral immunity and disease prevention: an insight for implications in oral health policy.

INTRODUCTION: Oral diseases such as caries and periodontitis are complex, multifactorial diseases and remain the most prevalent worldwide. Both diseases are associated with vitamin D deficiency (VDD) and its pathophysiological process. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) is rising in developing countries, and studies have shown that oral diseases are more prevalent among the metabolic group. This study aims to assess and correlate the relationship between serum vitamin D levels, salivary antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), and their role in oral health. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 80

Relationships between diabetes, vitamin D status, depression, and Hispanic ethnicity: a project FRONTIER study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Vitamin D (VD) status has been linked to the development of diabetes. However, this relationship in the context of comorbid conditions remains understudied. Additionally, ethnic disparities in nutritional status and chronic disease prevalence within rural populations are a vastly underrepresented area of research. In our previous study, we explored VD levels and depression in a rural West Texas aging sample. In the present study, we investigated the associations between diabetes, vitamin D (VD) levels, depression, and Hispanic ethnicity (HE) among a sample of aging, rura

Vitamin D Deficiency in the Pregnant Population at University Hospital Birmingham: Does It Justify Universal Screening?

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D deficiency is a growing global health concern, particularly among pregnant women, due to its associations with adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. Birmingham represents a unique high-risk population with substantial ethnic diversity and socioeconomic deprivation, both of which may predispose to low vitamin D levels. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among pregnant women attending antenatal care at a large tertiary hospital and to evaluate whether risk-based screening adequately identifies deficient individuals. METHODS: This retrosp

Proteomic trajectories in human rotator cuff degeneration: a systematic review of immunohistochemical studies.

BACKGROUND: Rotator cuff (RC) repairs heal unreliably, particularly in chronic disease. The molecular mechanisms underlying failed repair remain poorly understood. While individual studies have examined protein expression in diseased RC tissue, no synthesis has investigated these findings across various disease stages. This systematic review explores the stage-specific protein expression of human RC degeneration using immunohistochemistry. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Library were systematically searched to September 2025 for human studies that use immun

Evaluation of bone safety and antiseizure medications: a multi-source pharmacovigilance and Mendelian randomization analysis.

The association between antiseizure medications (ASMs) and bone disorders remains inadequately investigated despite growing concern about drug-induced bone adverse events (AEs). We analyzed data from the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database (Q1 2004-Q2 2025), identifying 7688 reports of bone health-related AEs listing ASMs as primary suspect drugs. Disproportionality analysis was performed using the reporting odds ratio (ROR) for signal detection. Subsequently, network pharmacology was applied to explore underlying biological pathways. Finally, two-sample Mendelian randomization
