Etiology of Anemia in Older Mexican Adults: The Role of Hepcidin, Vitamin A and Vitamin D.

Anemia in older adults is a growing public health issue in Mexico; however, its etiology remains largely unknown. Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) and vitamin D deficiency (VDD) have been implicated in the development of anemia, though by different mechanisms. The aim of this study is to analyze the etiology of anemia and anemia-related factors in older Mexican adults. This is a cross-sectional study of 803 older adults from the southern region of Mexico in 2015. The anemia etiologies analyzed were chronic kidney disease (CKD), nutritional deficiencies (ND), anemia of inflammation (AI), anemia of mu

Review of the Nutrition Situation in Jordan: Trends and Way Forward.

Jordan is witnessing an escalating pace of nutrition transition, which may be associated with an increased burden of malnutrition and related non-communicable diseases. This review analyzes the nutrition situation in Jordan by exploring specific nutrition indicators, namely infant and young child feeding, low birthweight, micronutrient deficiencies, anthropometric indicators, and food consumption patterns. Results showed that although most children were ever breastfed and early initiation of breastfeeding had a two-fold increasing trend, rates of exclusive breastfeeding below 6 months of age a

Micronutrient's deficiency in India: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

India is coming to grips with a stage of nutrition transition. According to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), preventable micronutrient deficiency is arising public health precedence in India. However, the foremost public health concern is the lack of national prevalence data. The present study was carried out to estimate the pooled age-wise prevalence of six preventable micronutrient deficiencies (vitamin A, vitamin B12, vitamin D, iron, iodine and folic acid) in India. A systematic review was carried out on PubMed and Global Index Medicus databases using the Boolean s

Vitamin D status and obesity markers in older adults: results from West China Health and Aging Trends study.

BACKGROUNDS: Vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency in older adults seems to be common, but the prevalence estimates are lacking in West China. Previous studies suggested that low vitamin D status was associated with obesity. However, most of them evaluated obesity based on body mass index (BMI) and there are no studies at present exploring the association between vitamin D status and different obesity markers. The present study aims to investigate the prevalence of low vitamin D status and evaluate the association between the vitamin D status and different obesity markers among older adults i

The Role of Vitamin Deficiency in Liver Disease: To Supplement or Not Supplement?

Over the past few years, growing interest has been shown for the impact of dietary requirements and nutritional factors on chronic diseases. As a result, nutritional programs have been reinforced by public health policies. The precise role of micronutrients in chronic liver disease is currently receiving particular attention since abnormalities in vitamin levels are often detected. At present, treatment programs are focused on correcting vitamin deficiencies, which are frequently correlated to higher rates of comorbidities with poor outcomes. The literature reviewed here indicates that liver d

Nasal hemangiopericytoma presenting with oncogenic osteomalasia: A case report and literature review.

Sinonasal type hemangiopericytoma is a rare soft tissue tumor. Oncogenic osteomalacia (tumor-induced osteomalacia) is a rare syndrome that develops especially due to benign mesenchymal tumors. Nonspecific general bone pain and weakness delay the diagnosis and treatment of oncogenic osteomalacia, and it is difficult to determine the localization of the primary tumor causing oncogenic osteomalacia. A 43-year-old male patient with nasal hemangiopericytoma with symptoms of oncogenic osteomalacia is presented. The patient had musculoskeletal complaints at first and was diagnosed with lumbar disc he

Animal models for research on endometriosis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on the relationship between visual impairment and driving safety in older adults, with a focus on the visual functions required for safe driving, the impact of common visual deficits, and current approaches to clinical evaluation and management. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies have strengthened evidence that visual functions beyond high contrast visual acuity--particularly visual field sensitivity, contrast sensitivity, and visual processing speed--are associated with driving performance and crash risk. Emerging studies als

The Influence of Dietary Interventions on Chronic Kidney Disease-Mineral and Bone Disorder (CKD-MBD).

Chronic kidney disease is a health problem whose prevalence is increasing worldwide. The kidney plays an important role in the metabolism of minerals and bone health and therefore, even at the early stages of CKD, disturbances in bone metabolism are observed. In the course of CKD, various bone turnover or mineralization disturbances can develop including adynamic hyperparathyroid, mixed renal bone disease, osteomalacia. The increased risk of fragility fractures is present at any age in these patients. Nutritional treatment of patients with advanced stages of CKD is aiming at prevention or corr

Moderate to severe vitamin D deficiency increases the risk of mortality due to COVID‑19 in patients treated in a respiratory intensive care unit.

An international Consensus Meeting to determine a standard in the examination technique for the detection of right-to-left shunt (RLS) using contrast transcranial Doppler sonography (TCD) led to the following recommendations to standardize the examination procedure: The patient should be prepared with an 18-gauge needle inserted into the cubital vein and should be in the supine position. Insonation of at least one middle cerebral artery (MCA) using TCD is performed. The contrast agent is prepared using 9 ml isotonic saline solution and 1 ml air mixed with a three-way stopcock by exchange of sa

High prevalence of biochemical disturbances of chronic kidney disease - mineral and bone disorders (CKD-MBD) in a nation-wide peritoneal dialysis cohort: are guideline goals too hard to achieve?

INTRODUCTION: Chronic kidney disease - mineral and bone disorders (CKD-MBD) are common in dialysis patients. Definition of targets for calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), parathormone (iPTH), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and their treatment recommendations, are provided by international guidelines. There are few studies analyzing CKD-MBD in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients and the impact of guidelines on mineral metabolism control. The aim of our study was to describe the prevalence of biomarkers for CKD-MBD in a large cohort of PD patients in Brazil. METHODS: Data from the nation-wide prospecti

Consensus Recommendations for the Diagnosis and Management of X-Linked Hypophosphatemia in Belgium.

X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) is the most common genetic form of hypophosphatemic rickets and osteomalacia. In this disease, mutations in the PHEX gene lead to elevated levels of the hormone fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), resulting in renal phosphate wasting and impaired skeletal and dental mineralization. Recently, international guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of this condition have been published. However, more specific recommendations are needed to provide guidance at the national level, considering resource availability and health economic aspects. A national multidiscip

Validation of the Radiographic Global Impression of Change (RGI-C) score to assess healing of rickets in pediatric X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH).

BACKGROUND: Rickets is a primary manifestation of pediatric X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) - a rare progressive hereditary phosphate-wasting disease. Severity is quantified from radiographs using the Rickets Severity Scale (RSS). The Radiographic Global Impression of Change (RGI-C) is a complementary assessment in which a change score is assigned based on differences in the appearance of rickets on pairs of radiographs compared side by side. OBJECTIVE: The current study evaluated the reliability, validity, and sensitivity to change of the RGI-C specifically in pediatric XLH. METHODS: The re

Early Discrimination Between Tumor-Induced Rickets/Osteomalacia and X-Linked Hypophosphatemia in Chinese Children and Adolescents: A Retrospective Case-Control Study.

In children and adolescents, distinguishing tumor-induced rickets/osteomalacia (TIR/O) from hereditary hypophosphatemic rickets/osteomalacia (HR/O) is a medical challenge. We retrospectively studied 10 Chinese children and adolescents with TIR/O who underwent surgery at a mean age of 17.4 ± 2.1 years and compared their characteristics to 24 age- and sex-matched patients with X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH). Positive family history of HR/O and dental problems, such as enamel hypoplasia and dental abscess, were reported in 8 (33.3%) and 5 (20.8%) patients with XLX, respectively, but not in patie

Burosumab treatment for fibrous dysplasia.

BACKGROUND: Fibrous dysplasia/McCune-Albright syndrome (FD/MAS) is a rare mosaic disorder of Gαs activation. Fibroblast Growth Factor 23 (FGF23)-mediated hypophosphatemia is a feature of FD/MAS that has been associated with poor skeletal outcomes. Standard therapy includes oral phosphorus and vitamin D analogs; however, treatment is limited by potential adverse renal and gastrointestinal effects. Burosumab is a monoclonal antibody to FGF23 approved to treat patients with X-linked hypophosphatemia and tumor-induced osteomalacia. There is currently no safety or efficacy data to support burosumab

Rare PHEX variant with insidious presentation leads to a delayed diagnosis of X-linked hypophosphatemia.

A 7-year-old girl without a significant previous medical history was diagnosed with X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets (XLHR) due to a rare, most likely pathogenic, PHEX gene variant after a 4-year delayed diagnosis due to mild clinical presentation. At 2 years of age, her intoeing and femoral bowing were attributed to physiologic bowing and borderline vitamin D sufficiency, despite phosphorus not being measured. Hypophosphatemia was eventually detected after incomplete improvement of bowing and leg length discrepancy with suboptimal linear growth. This rare PHEX variant (c.1949T>C, p.Leu650Pro
