Transcriptomics identify the triggering of citrate export as the key event caused by manganese deficiency in Aspergillus niger.

UNLABELLED: For over a century, the filamentous Ascomycete fungus Aspergillus niger has played a pivotal role in the industrial production of citric acid. A critical fermentation parameter that sustains high-yield citric acid accumulation is the suboptimal concentration of manganese(II) ions in the culture broth at the early stages of the process. However, the requirement for this deficiency has not been investigated on a functional genomics level. In this study, we compared the transcriptome of the citric acid hyper-producer A. niger NRRL2270 strain grown under citric acid-producing condition

Sufficient manganese supply is necessary for OsNramp5 knockout rice plants to ensure normal growth and less Cd uptake.

The development of crop cultivars with less Cd uptake in roots and accumulation in shoots is a most efficient and environment-friendly approach to deal with soil Cd contamination. Recently repression of Nramp5 expression or its knockout is commonly recognized to be efficient for reducing Cd accumulation in plants, but such mutant plants suffer from manganese deficiency. In this study, we assessed the efficacy of exogenous Mn addition in mitigating Cd stress in a japonica rice cultivar Xidao 1 (Wild Type, WT) and its OsNramp5 knockout mutant. Exposure to Cd stress resulted in notable low photos

Turmeric counteracts manganese-associated deteriorations in liver and kidney tissues: histomorphometric and biochemical insights.

Nowadays, Manganese (Mn) become an unavoidable ingredient in agriculture, medical and manufacturing industries. Manganese deficiency is rare, and even though recurrent exposure to manganese is inevitable for humans, concerns have been voiced regarding public health hazards. This research was designed to evaluate the manganese toxicity and potential protective effects of turmeric in Swiss albino male mice. Eight-week albino mice (33 ± 01 g) were randomized equally into seven groups (n = 10), as control (untreated), VC-I (received 0.1 ml of saline water), Mn-I, Mn-II & Mn-III administrated manga

The Regulation of ZIP8 by Dietary Manganese in Mice.

ZIP8 is a newly identified manganese transporter. A lack of functional ZIP8 results in severe manganese deficiency in both humans and mice, indicating that ZIP8 plays a crucial role in maintaining body manganese homeostasis. Despite a well-acknowledged connection between ZIP8 and manganese metabolism, how ZIP8 is regulated under high-manganese conditions remains unclear. The primary goal of this study was to examine the regulation of ZIP8 by high-manganese intake. We used both neonatal and adult mouse models in which mice were supplied with dietary sources containing either a normal or a high

Effect of Mn Deficiency on Carbon and Nitrogen Metabolism of Different Genotypes Seedlings in Maize (Zea mays L.).

Manganese deficiency critically impairs the function and stability of photosystem II (PSII) and negatively impacts crop growth and yield. However, the response mechanisms of carbon and nitrogen metabolism to Mn deficiency in different genotypes of maize and the differences in Mn deficiency tolerance are unclear. Herein, three different genotypes of maize seedlings (sensitive genotype: Mo17, tolerant genotype: B73, and B73 × Mo17) were exposed to Mn deficiency treatment for 16 days using liquid culture with different concentrations of MnSO4 [0.00, 2.23, 11.65, and 22.30 mg/L (control)]. Metabolic Diseases in Beef Cattle.

Beef cattle are less prone to metabolic diseases as compared with dairy cattle; however, there are disease entities of concern in feedlot and cow-calf beef cattle operations. In one study, a prevalence of 2% was found for ruminant acidosis in a feedlot; however, there is little prevalence information published with regard to metabolic diseases in beef cattle.1 Metabolic diseases covered in this article are hypomagnesemia, ruminal acidosis, and all of the common sequelae, polioencephalomalacia, manganese deficiency, and protein-energy malnutrition (PEM).

Mutual Effect of Gypsum and Potassium on Nutrient Productivity in the Alfalfa-Grass Sward-A Case Study.

It was assumed that the production of alfalfa in soils naturally poor in available nutrients, such as potassium (K) and calcium (Ca), depends on the use of fertilizers. This hypothesis was validated in an experiment with an alfalfa-grass mixture carried out in 2012, 2013 and 2014 on soil formed from loamy sand that had a low content of available Ca and K. The two-factor experiment consisted of two levels of applied gypsum as a source of Ca (0, 500 kg ha-1) and five levels of PK fertilizers (absolute control, P60K0, P60K30, P60K60 and P60K120). The total yield of the sward was determined by the

Manganese sulfate application promotes berry flavonoid accumulation in Vitis vinifera cv. 'Cabernet Sauvignon' by regulating flavonoid metabolome and transcriptome profiles.

BACKGROUND: Flavonoids are vital for the development of high-quality grapes and wine, and manganese deficiency decreases grape berry coloration. However, the effects and underlying mechanisms of action of manganese sulfate on grape metabolic profiles have not been adequately researched. In this study, three concentrations of manganese sulfate solutions, 0.5 μmol·L-1 (low, L), 5 μmol·L-1 (middle, M - the standard manganese concentration of Hoagland nutrient solution, control), and 1000 μmol·L-1 (high, H), were applied to the 'Cabernet Sauvignon' grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) to explore the effe

NRAMP6 and NRAMP1 cooperatively regulate root growth and manganese translocation under manganese deficiency in Arabidopsis.

The essential micronutrient manganese (Mn) in plants regulates multiple biological processes including photosynthesis and oxidative stress. Some Natural Resistance-Associated Macrophage Proteins (NRAMPs) have been reported to play critical roles in Mn uptake and reutilization in low Mn conditions. NRAMP6 was demonstrated to regulate cadmium tolerance and iron utilization in Arabidopsis. Nevertheless, it is unclear whether NRAMP6 plays a role in Mn nutrition. Here, we report that NRAMP6 cooperates with NRAMP1 in Mn utilization. Mutation of NRAMP6 in nramp1 but not in a wild-type background redu

A weak allele of OsNRAMP5 confers moderate cadmium uptake while avoiding manganese deficiency in rice.

Decreasing cadmium (Cd) concentrations in rice grains can effectively reduce potential risks to human health because rice is the major contributor to Cd intake in many diets. Among several genes involved in rice Cd accumulation, the loss of function of OsNRAMP5 is known to be effective in reducing grain concentration by inhibiting root uptake. However, disruption of this gene simultaneously decreases manganese (Mn) uptake because OsNRAMP5 is a major Mn transporter. With the aim of improving Mn uptake in OsNRAMP5 mutants while still restricting the grain Cd concentration below the upper limit o

HIF-1α upregulation exerts the antagonistic effect against angiogenesis inhibition in manganese deficiency-induced tibial dyschondroplasia of broiler chicks.

Manganese (Mn) is an essential microelement for broiler breeding and its deficiency causes tibial dyschondroplasia (TD). Tibial growth plate (TGP) development and metaphyseal vascularization are crucial for tibia growth in fast-growing broiler chickens, but their roles in Mn deficiency-induced TD in chicks remain unclear. This study was designed to clarify this issue. A total of 36 one-day-old broilers were divided into the control group and Mn-deficiency (Mn-D) group, which were fed with a standard diet (60 mg Mn/kg) and Mn deficiency diet (22 mg Mn/kg) for 42 days, respectively. Manganese Deficiency Suppresses Growth and Photosynthetic Processes but Causes an Increase in the Expression of Photosynthetic Genes in Scots Pine Seedlings.

Manganese deficiency is a serious plant nutritional disorder, resulting in the loss of crop productivity in many parts of the world. Despite the progress made in the study of angiosperms, the demand for Mn in gymnosperms and the physiological responses to Mn deficiency remain unexplored. We studied the influence of Mn deficiency for 24 weeks on Pinus sylvestris L. seedling growth, ion homeostasis, pigment contents, lipid peroxidation, chlorophyll fluorescence indices and the transcript levels of photosynthetic genes and genes involved in chlorophyll biosynthesis. It was shown that Mn-deficient

Nutritional chondrodysplasia in cattle in Brazil.

In this work, we investigated cases of birth of calves with congenital defects in a farm in Southern Brazil. Only calves born from heifers were affected, and the disease occurred in both crossbred and purebred calves. Three necropsies were performed, tissues were collected for histopathology, and samples of liver of calves, blood serum, and food provided for cows and heifers were collected to quantify the levels of the minerals: manganese, copper, and zinc. The calves were born weak, with disproportionate dwarfism, limb deformities, and enlarged joints. Heads were shortened and domed. Long bon

Manganese Limitation of Phytoplankton Physiology and Productivity in the Southern Ocean.

Although iron and light are understood to regulate the Southern Ocean biological carbon pump, observations have also indicated a possible role for manganese. Low concentrations in Southern Ocean surface waters suggest manganese limitation is possible, but its spatial extent remains poorly constrained and direct manganese limitation of the marine carbon cycle has been neglected by ocean models. Here, using available observations, we develop a new global biogeochemical model and find that phytoplankton in over half of the Southern Ocean cannot attain maximal growth rates because of manganese def

Ca2+ signaling in plant manganese uptake: CPK21/23 kinases phosphorylate and activate manganese transporter NRAMP1.

This brief article highlights the results of Fu et al. (Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 119:e2204574119, 2022), who recently found that manganese (Mn) deficiency triggers long-lasting multicellular Ca2+ oscillations in the elongation zone (EZ) of Arabidopsis roots and revealed a Ca2+-CPK21/23-NRAMP1 axis as an important mechanism for plant tolerance and adaptation to low Mn.

Trehalose matrix effects on electron transfer in Mn-depleted protein-pigment complexes of Photosystem II.

The kinetics of flash-induced re-reduction of the Photosystem II (PS II) primary electron donor P680 was studied in solution and in trehalose glassy matrices at different relative humidity. In solution, and in the re-dissolved glass, kinetics were dominated by two fast components with lifetimes in the range of 2-7 μs, which accounted for >85% of the decay. These components were ascribed to the direct electron transfer from the redox-active tyrosine YZ to P680+. The minor slower components were due to charge recombination between the primary plastoquinone acceptor QA- and P680+. Incorporation o
