Micronutrient deficiency reshapes plant-microbe interaction networks: unraveling microbial community dynamics and functional adaptability in a sterile system.

Micronutrient deficiencies critically influence plant development and plant–microbe interactions, yet their role in reshaping microbial community dynamics remains poorly resolved. Here, we hypothesized that micronutrient deprivation alters plant-associated microbiomes through physiological and microbiota-mediated pathways, with cascading effects on plant growth and stress adaptation. Using axenic conditions, we subjected Gypsophila paniculata tissue culture seedlings to copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), and boron (B) deficiencies. We integrated 16S rRNA/ITS sequencing, functional p

Mechanistic insights into the treatment of iron-deficiency anemia and arthritis in humans with dietary molybdenum.

In the last few decades, there has been a resurgence in interest in the use of dietary supplements to treat diseases in humans and molybdenum has the potential to be used therapeutically. In humans, dietary molybdenum has been shown to treat iron-deficiency anemia and it may treat joint pain in arthritis. It has been proposed that the anti-anemic and tentative anti-arthritic properties of molybdenum are because it is increasing the activity of one or more mammalian molybdoenzymes. Molybdenum forms part of the active site of these enzymes. Despite this, it is unlikely that a molybdenum deficien

Integrated Analysis of Molybdenum Nutrition and Nitrate Metabolism in Strawberry.

Molybdenum (Mo) is a component of the Mo cofactor (Moco) of nitrate reductase (NR) and is therefore essential for nitrate metabolism. However, little is known about Mo deficiency phenotypes or about how physiological and molecular mechanisms of Mo uptake and transport influence nitrate uptake and utilization in strawberry. Here, we used physiological and cytological techniques to identify Mo deficiency phenotypes in strawberry. Seedlings cultured with MoO4 2- grew well and exhibited normal microstructure and ultrastructure of leaves and roots. By contrast, seedlings cultivated under Mo-deficie

Development of a rapid UPLC-MS/MS determination of urine sulfocysteine for diagnosis of sulfocysteinuria and molybdenum co-factor deficiencies.

AIM: Molybdenum co-factor deficiencies and isolated sulfite oxidase deficiency are rare autosomal recessively inherited diseases characterized by severe psychomotor impairment, intractable seizures, dislocated lens and dysmorphic facial features. The biochemical diagnosis of these diseases requires the determination of urine sulfocysteine. MATERIALS & METHODS: Urine sulfocysteine was quantified by an ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-MS/MS assay. The method was validated for linearity, accuracy, precision, recovery and stability. RESULTS & CONCLUSION: Total imprecision of accuracy

Medicago truncatula Molybdate Transporter type 1 (MtMOT1.3) is a plasma membrane molybdenum transporter required for nitrogenase activity in root nodules under molybdenum deficiency.

Molybdenum, as a component of the iron-molybdenum cofactor of nitrogenase, is essential for symbiotic nitrogen fixation. This nutrient has to be provided by the host plant through molybdate transporters. Members of the molybdate transporter family Molybdate Transporter type 1 (MOT1) were identified in the model legume Medicago truncatula and their expression in nodules was determined. Yeast toxicity assays, confocal microscopy, and phenotypical characterization of a Transposable Element from Nicotiana tabacum (Tnt1) insertional mutant line were carried out in the one M. truncatula MOT1 family

[Sulfite oxidase activity deficiency caused by cofactor molybdenum deficiency: A case of early severe encephalopathy].

Neonatal seizure incidence is approximately 3.5/1000 live births. Inborn metabolic diseases account for approximately 1-4% of neonatal seizure cases. Among them, the catabolism anomaly of sulfite to sulfate caused by sulfite oxidase or cofactor molybdenum deficiency (MoCD) is a rare metabolic disorder in which neurological damage is similar to that found in neonatal asphyxia. We report the case of a newborn child with a MoCD. Born of related parents, this child had intrauterine growth retardation predominating on size diagnosed in the third trimester of pregnancy. After an uneventful birth, he

Reduction Kinetics of La2Mo2O9 and Phase Evolution during Reduction and Reoxidation.

An amorphous reduced form of oxide ion conductor La2Mo2O9 had been proposed as sulfur-tolerant anode material for solid oxide fuel cell, but its oxygen content was not known. In this paper, we investigate the reduction kinetics by diluted hydrogen of La2Mo2O9 to amorphous, and the oxygen range of the amorphous form. The reduction kinetics is studied as a function of the powder specific surface area and of the temperature, on powders synthesized by solid state reaction and by polyol process using two different solvents. The reduction process was carried out by TGA under 10% H2 diluted in argon,

Nutrient deficiencies modify the ionomic composition of plant tissues: a focus on cross-talk between molybdenum and other nutrients in Brassica napus.

The composition of the ionome is closely linked to a plant's nutritional status. Under certain deficiencies, cross-talk induces unavoidable accumulation of some nutrients, which upsets the balance and modifies the ionomic composition of plant tissues. Rapeseed plants (Brassica napus L.) grown under controlled conditions were subject to individual nutrient deficiencies (N, K, P, Ca, S, Mg, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, Mo, or B) and analyzed by inductively high-resolution coupled plasma mass spectrometry to determine the impact of deprivation on the plant ionome. Eighteen situations of increased uptake under

Low molybdenum state induced by tungsten as a model of molybdenum deficiency in rats.

Organ molybdenum (Mo) concentration and the activity of hepatic sulfite oxidase and xanthine oxidase were compared in tungsten-administered rats as well as rats fed with a low Mo diet to evaluate the use of tungsten-administered rats as a model of Mo deficiency. Twenty-four male 6-week-old Wistar rats were divided into four groups according to diet (AIN93G diet (control diet) or the control diet minus ammonium molybdate (low Mo diet)) and drinking water (deionized water or deionized water containing 200 μg/mL tungsten in the form of sodium tungstate). Mo content in the control and low Mo diets

Molybdenum deprivation, purine ingestion and an astrocyte-associated motor neurone syndrome in sheep: assumed clinical effects of inosine.

BACKGROUND: An astrocyte-associated motor neurone syndrome was produced in molybdenum-deprived sheep fed xanthosine. Mo-deprived sheep fed inosine, adenosine or guanosine would be also expected to develop astrocyte-associated motor neurone syndromes, because all these purine nucleosides can act as neuromodulators and all depend on the Mo-associated enzyme xanthine oxidase-dehydrogenase for their catabolism. DESIGN: To investigate the relationship between inosine ingestion and low Mo concentration, eight sheep were fed lucerne chaff with a Mo value <0.10 ppm and the Mo antagonist, sodium tungs

Transcranial magnetic stimulation to understand pathophysiology and as potential treatment for neurodegenerative diseases.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a complex, centralized pain condition that is often difficult to diagnose and treat. FM is considered to have a genetic background due to its familial aggregation and due to findings from multiple candidate-gene studies implicating catecholaminergic and serotonergic neurotransmitter systems in chronic pain. However, a multi-factorial analysis of both genetic and environmental risk factors is lacking. A better characterization of the interplay of risk factors may assist in understanding the pathophysiology of FM, its clinical course, and assist in early diagnosi

What can we learn from a patient on dialysis for 42 years?

Molybdenum is an essential element in the form of the molybdenum cofactor (Moco). In humans, Moco is required for four enzymes: xanthine oxidase (XO), aldehyde oxidase, sulfite oxidase (SO), and mitochondrial amidoxime-reducing component (mARC). The enzymes are involved in the oxidation of purines to uric acid, metabolism of aromatic aldehydes and heterocyclic compounds, and in the catabolism of sulfur amino acids. Molybdenum cofactor deficiency is a rare autosomal recessive syndrome due to a defective synthesis of Moco, resulting in a deficiency of all the molybdoenzymes. There are no reports

Motor neurone disease in molybdenum-deficient sheep fed the endogenous purine xanthosine: possible mechanism for Tribulus staggers.

BACKGROUND: The occurrence of Tribulus terrestris motor neurone disease (MND) in sheep is linked with grazing Tribulus growing on cultivation paddocks. A previous survey found that the molybdenum (Mo) content of Tribulus growing on uncultivated soils in the Coonabarabran district of New South Wales was 3.03 ppm, but on cultivated soils it was <0.04 ppm. Tribulus contains the purine, xanthosine, which functions as a neuromodulator, and the catabolism of xanthosine is Mo-dependent. DESIGN: To investigate the relationship between xanthosine ingestion and low Mo concentration, eight sheep were fe

Role of trace elements in parenteral nutrition support of the surgical neonate.

BACKGROUND: Parenteral nutrition (PN) has transformed the outcome for neonates with surgical problems in the intensive care unit. Trace element supplementation in PN is a standard practice in many neonatal intensive care units. However, many of these elements are contaminants in PN solutions, and contamination levels may, in themselves, be sufficient for normal metabolic needs. Additional supplementation may actually lead to toxicity in neonates whose requirements are small. METHODS: An electronic search of the MEDLINE, Cochrane Collaboration, and SCOPUS English language medical databases was

Effects of molybdenum deficiency and defects in molybdate transporter MOT1 on transcript accumulation and nitrogen/sulphur metabolism in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Molybdenum (Mo) is a micronutrient essential for plant growth, as several key enzymes of plant metabolic pathways contain Mo cofactor in their catalytic centres. Mo-containing oxidoreductases include nitrate reductase, sulphite oxidase, xanthine dehydrogenase, and aldehyde oxidase. These are involved in nitrate assimilation, sulphite detoxification, purine metabolism or the synthesis of abscisic acid, auxin and glucosinolates in plants. To understand the effects of Mo deficiency and a mutation in a molybdate transporter, MOT1, on nitrogen and sulphur metabolism in Arabidopsis thaliana, transcr

Molybdenum intake influences molybdenum kinetics in men.

The objectives of this study were to determine physiologic adaptations that occur when humans are exposed to a wide range of molybdenum intake levels and to identify the pathways that are influenced by dietary intake. Four males consumed each of 5 daily molybdenum intakes of 22, 72, 121, 467, and 1490 microg/d (0.23, 0.75, 1.3, 4.9, and 15.5 micromol/d) for 24 d each. During each treatment period, oral and intravenous doses of (100)Mo and (97)Mo were administered. Serial plasma, urine, and fecal samples were analyzed for labeled and unlabeled molybdenum. Mineral deficiencies in tule elk, Owens Valley, California.

Male tule elk (Cervus elaphus nannodes) are susceptible to high rates of antler breakage in Owens Valley, California. We hypothesized that a mineral deficiency in the diet predisposed male elk to antler breakage. We analyzed elk antler, liver, and forage samples to identify mineral imbalances. We compared the mineral content of livers and antlers from elk in Owens Valley to samples taken from tule elk at Grizzly Island Wildlife Area, a population experiencing normal rates (<5%) of antler breakage. Antler and liver samples were collected from 1989 to 1993, and in 2002, and were tested for calci
