A genome-wide association study unveils the genetic architecture of morphological and biomass partitioning traits in maize under iron-deficient stress.

Iron (Fe) deficiency significantly constrains maize productivity and nutritional quality, particularly in alkaline soils. To address this challenge, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) was performed using the BLINK model on 93 diverse maize inbred lines genotyped with 230,657 SNPs. Eight morphological and biomass partitioning traits were evaluated under both optimum and Fe-deficient stress (Fe-DS) conditions over two growing seasons. Population structure analysis revealed five distinct genetic subpopulations. A total of 546 and 187 moderately significant marker-trait associations (MTAs) wer

Molecular basis of delayed leaf senescence induced by short-term treatment with low phosphate in rice.

Leaf senescence is a programmed plant developmental process that can also be regulated by environmental factors, like nutrient availability. Although phosphorus is an essential element determining plants' growth, mechanisms underlying adaptation to phosphorus availability in plants are not well understood. In this study, we combined physiological, biochemical and molecular approaches to investigate the effect of phosphate supply on leaf senescence in rice, one of the world's most important crops. We show that short-term treatment of rice seedlings with low phosphate increases photosynthetic pi

Costs and benefits of replacing preventive antenatal iron and folic acid with multiple micronutrients in 25 low- and middle-income countries.

INTRODUCTION: Micronutrient deficiencies during pregnancy have serious consequences for both mother and child; thus the longstanding standard of care in low- and low-middle income countries (LMICs) has been daily prenatal iron-folic acid (IFA) supplementation. While prenatal multiple micronutrient supplements (MMSs) provide additional significant benefits in comparison to IFA supplements, the view that MMS is too expensive has hindered national MMS adoption. However, increased competition, volume procurement and the use of advanced purchase commitments have significantly reduced the cost of MM

Micronutrient Status in Children Suffering From Anorexia Nervosa: A Cohort of 349 Patients in a Referral Center for Eating Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a serious illness in which more than half of all deaths are due to malnutrition. Critically low energy and protein intake are known causes of massive weight loss, whereas micronutrient deficiencies due to a low-calorie food pattern remain poorly characterized in children with AN. Micronutrient deficiencies in AN, such as selenium deficiency, are known to increase anxiety and the risk of suicide. Two large studies in adults highlighted frequent selenium and copper deficiencies; this information is lacking in children. The present study aimed to provide a comp

Melatonin in Health and Disease and its Metabolism by the Gut Microbes: Implications for Deuterium Homeostasis?

Deuterium (2H), a heavy isotope of protium (1H), is a naturally occurring element with a significant impact on human metabolism. Despite its natural presence, deuterium can impair mitochondrial function by damaging ATPase pumps; consequently, biological organisms have evolved sophisticated strategies to mitigate the risks of deuterium overload and protect mitochondrial integrity. Multiple enzymes have evolved to prefer hydrogen over deuterium in their reactions to protect these pumps. One class of enzymes is the cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes, which oxidize many substrates, mainly in the Endopl

DMT1 regulates systemic trace metal handling and developmental outcomes: Insights from targeted mutagenesis in zebrafish.

Divalent metal transporter 1 (DMT1) is thought to be the primary route for non-heme iron absorption in vertebrates, but its systemic role remains poorly understood. Using CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing, we generated a DMT1 knockout (dmt1-/-; KO) zebrafish mutant line to examine the developmental and physiological consequences of DMT1 loss. Phenotypic and hematological assessments were performed alongside measurements of whole-body and tissue-specific metal concentrations. Further, to identify potential compensatory pathways during DMT1 loss, the expression profile of candidate metal transporters or

Integrating hyperspectral reflectance and machine learning for rapid diagnosis of nutrient deficiencies in greenhouse chrysanthemum leaves.

Under greenhouse production conditions, variability in fertilization management, substrate properties, and microenvironmental factors can disrupt balanced nutrient uptake, often resulting in localized or transient multi-element nutrient imbalances. Hyperspectral sensing provides continuous and high-resolution spectral information for plant nutrient assessment. However, most existing studies focus on single-element deficiencies or simplified scenarios, which limits their applicability to complex nutritional environments encountered in practice. To address this limitation, we designed a series o

Essential Trace Elements Zinc, Iron, Copper and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Children and Adolescents: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Case-Control Studies.

Essential trace elements such as zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), and copper (Cu) play a critical role in neurodevelopment, influencing key processes like neurotransmitter regulation and neuronal signaling. To synthesize the existing evidence, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of case-control studies investigating the associations between these trace elements and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children and adolescents. A comprehensive literature search was performed up to March 2026 across multiple databases, including Web of Science, PubMed, and the Chinese National

Telomere-to-telomere genome of Stylosanthes guianensis uncovers symbiotic adaptation to phosphorus-deficient soils.

BACKGROUND: Stylosanthes guianensis, a representative tropical legume, exhibits remarkable adaptation to low-phosphorus acidic soils. As a symbiotic species, it forms root nodule associations with rhizobia to fix atmospheric nitrogen, potentially enhancing phosphate use efficiency. This study aims to decipher the mechanisms linking root nodule symbiosis to low-phosphate adaptation in Stylosanthes guianensis. RESULTS: We present the first gap-free, telomere-to-telomere genome of Stylosanthes guianensis (1.20 Gb), containing 82.28% repetitive sequences and 34,728 genes, with 99.30% BUSCO comple

Leveraging Salt Fortification Platforms to Address Multiple-Micronutrient Deficiencies in Africa: A Policy Opportunity.

Micronutrient deficiencies remain widespread across sub-Saharan Africa, reflecting not only inadequate diets but also limitations in how current interventions are designed and delivered. Universal salt iodization (USI) has achieved broad population coverage and represents one of the most successful large-scale nutrition interventions globally. However, most fortification strategies continue to target single nutrients in isolation, missing opportunities to address overlapping deficiencies. Recent evidence from Ethiopia demonstrates that folic acid can be co-fortified with iodized salt without c

Nitrogen Deficiency Outperforms Water Stress in Triggering Strigolactone-Dependent Responses in Maize.

Strigolactones (SLs) modulate multiple aspects of plant development and stress physiology. This study investigated their role in maize response to abiotic stress by comparing an SL-biosynthesis mutant (zmccd8) with wild-type (WT) seedlings grown for 4 weeks in vermiculite under nutrient and water limitation. Plant growth, time-course pigment accumulation, targeted gene expression, and root transcriptomic profiles were analyzed. Our results showed that zmccd8 plants were largely unable to induce leaf senescence and efficient nutrient remobilization toward younger tissues under nitrogen (N) defi

Sulfate starvation response modules connect sulfur metabolism to photorespiration and photosynthesis.

Mineral nutrients are essential for plant growth and development. Sulfur (S), as a macronutrient, is incorporated into numerous critical S-containing metabolites that play key roles in mitigating both abiotic and biotic stresses. Understanding how plants regulate S homeostasis and integrate it with other physiological processes is crucial for developing crops that can better withstand environmental challenges. Here, we demonstrate that the conserved sulfate starvation transcriptional response across Arabidopsis, tomato, rice, and Setaria is limited to only seven genes. We further characterize

Natural genetic variations underlying iron and zinc uptake efficiency in rice under direct-seeded cultivation conditions.

Iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) deficiencies frequently limit nutrient acquisition and grain micronutrient accumulation in rice grown under direct-seeded rice (DSR) systems due to reduced micronutrient availability in aerobic soils. Understanding the genetic architecture controlling micronutrient uptake and its association with root system architecture (RSA) is critical for developing nutrient-efficient rice varieties. In this study, a diverse panel of 290 rice genotypes was evaluated for RSA, agronomic traits, and grain Fe and Zn concentration under DSR conditions across three years. Genome-wide asso

Micronutrients and omega-3 PUFAs to promote healthy ageing: informing a physiology-based complementation strategy.

Global population ageing is increasing the burden of chronic disease, functional decline, and loss of independence. For most organs, decline in function starts during the 5th decade of life. Micronutrient (MN) insufficiencies/deficiencies are common and may accelerate biological ageing. MNs are required to support multiple physiologic processes, including mitochondrial homeostasis. Age-related declines in organ function are tightly linked to mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, inflammageing, and immunosenescence. Selected MNs (vitamins B, C, D, E, iron, selenium, zinc) are critical co

Toxoplasma GRA8 engages the host ESCRT accessory protein ALG-2 and is necessary for parasite metabolic integrity.

The endosomal sorting complex required for transport (ESCRT) is a hetero-multimeric membrane-remodeling machinery essential for endosomal sorting, intraluminal vesicle formation, cytokinetic abscission, and membrane repair. ESCRT is also hijacked by some pathogens including the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii, which subverts it at the parasitophorous vacuole membrane to support parasite ingestion of host cytosolic proteins. Although the ESCRT accessory protein, ALG-2 is recruited to the parasitophorous vacuole, nothing was known about how this happens. Herein we identify the dense granule protein

Zinc and Depression: From Neurobiological Functions to Gut-Brain Interactions.

The global prevalence of depression and its profound burden on public health create an urgent need to explore novel interventions beyond conventional therapeutic strategies. Zinc, a key regulator in the central nervous system, exerts multiple biological functions beyond maintaining neurotransmitter homeostasis, including inhibiting neuroinflammation, restoring neuroplasticity, and modulating gut microenvironmental homeostasis. This review summarizes the evidence linking zinc deficiency to the onset and development of depression, with a specific focus on the role of gut microbiota. It also disc
