Characterizing the wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) phosphate transporter gene family and analyzing expression patterns in response to low phosphorus stress during the seedling stage.

INTRODUCTION: Inorganic phosphorus (Pi) is an indispensable nutrient for plant growth, with phosphate transporter proteins (PHTs) having key roles in Pi uptake, transport, and signal transduction in plants. However, a systematic and comprehensive genomic analysis of the wheat PHT family (covering PHT1-5 and PHO1) is lacking. METHODS: In view of this, we successfully identified 180 Triticum aestivum PHT (TaPHT) members in 6 PHT families using bioinformatics, and performed in-depth phylogenetic analyses between these protein sequences and PHT family proteins from Arabidopsis thaliana and an imp

Nutrient limitations on photosynthesis: from individual to combinational stresses.

Liebig's law of the minimum states that increasing photosynthetic productivity on nutrient-impoverished soils depends on addressing the most limiting nutrient. Research has identified the roles of different mineral nutrients in photosynthetic processes. However, diffusional and biochemical regulation of photosynthesis both feature patterns of cumulative effects that jointly determine photosynthetic capacity. More importantly, responses to multiple nutrient stresses are not simply additive and require a comprehensive understanding of how these stresses interact and impact photosynthetic perform

Integrative spatial transcriptomic analysis pinpoints the role of the ferroxidase, TaMCO3, in wheat root tip iron mobilization.

Roots play a critical role in the sensing and absorption of essential minerals from the rhizosphere. Iron (Fe) deficiency, for example, triggers a well-known series of physiological and molecular responses within roots that facilitate uptake, which differs between monocots and dicots. In monocots, little is known about the molecular responses that occur within specific root development zones in response to iron deprivation, and how these differences result in overall nutrient uptake. Here, we conducted a transcriptome analysis of wheat root tips under Fe deficiency (-Fe) and performed a compar

Adaptive dynamics of extrachromosomal circular DNA in rice under nutrient stress.

Extrachromosomal circular DNAs (eccDNAs) have been identified in various eukaryotic organisms and are known to play crucial roles in genomic plasticity. However, in crop plants, the role of eccDNAs in responses to environmental cues, particularly nutritional stresses, remains unexplored. Rice (Oryza sativa ssp. japonica), a vital crop for over half the world's population and an excellent model plant for genomic studies, faces numerous environmental challenges during growth. Therefore, we conduct comprehensive studies investigating the distribution, sequence, and potential responses of rice ecc

Maternal multiple micronutrient supplementation in rural Pakistan increased some milk micronutrient concentrations, but not infant growth, at three-months postpartum: a randomized controlled trial substudy.

BACKGROUND: In Pakistan, maternal micronutrient deficiencies are highly prevalent, and stunting affects 43% of infants by 6-mo postpartum. Human milk composition for some micronutrients can be negatively affected by suboptimal maternal nutrition; however, it is unknown whether this affects infant growth. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to determine whether mothers receiving multiple micronutrient supplements (MMSs) compared with standard of care had 1) greater concentrations of iodine, vitamins A, E, and B12, and folate in their milk at 3-mo postpartum; and 2) improved growth of their offspring. Novel epidermal-cortical pattern and root apical silencing of VcCPC promoter activity in Arabidopsis might suggest a joint contribution to hairless roots in blueberry.

BACKGROUND: Root hairs are specialized tubular extensions that play a pivotal role in nutrient absorption and plant-soil interactions. Typically, they originate from epidermal cells, which differentiate into either hair cells or non-hair cells. In blueberry (Vaccinium spp.), the roots are devoid of root hairs. To examine the mechanisms responsible for the hairless root phenotype, this study conducted anatomical and molecular biological investigations on the hairless roots of blueberry. RESULTS: The epidermal cells of blueberry roots exhibit uniformity in size and cross-sectional dimensions, w

Zinc-Enriched Bifidobacterium longum subsp. longum CCFM1195 Alleviates Cutibacterium acnes-Induced Skin Lesions in Mice by Mitigating Inflammatory Responses and Oxidative Stress.

Background: Acne vulgaris, a prevalent inflammatory skin disorder, stems from factors like Cutibacterium acnes overgrowth, inflammation dysregulation, and immune dysfunction. Clinically, acne severity inversely correlates with serum zinc (Zn) levels, and oral Zn supplementation shows efficacy. Lactic acid bacteria are capable of converting inorganic Zn into organic forms via biological transformation, potentially generating Zn-enriched bacteria as superior Zn delivery vehicles. Methods: In this study, a Zn-deficient acne mouse model was established through dietary Zn restriction combined with

Trace Mineral Imbalances in Global Health: Challenges, Biomarkers, and the Role of Serum Analysis.

Background/Objectives: Trace minerals (TMs), both essential and toxic, are integral to human physiology, participating in enzymatic reactions, oxidative balance, immune function, and the modulation of chronic disease risk. Despite their importance, imbalances due to deficiencies or toxic exposures are widespread globally. While low-income countries often face overt deficiencies and environmental contamination, middle- and high-income populations increasingly deal with subclinical deficits and chronic toxic metal exposure. This review aims to explore the relevance of serum as a matrix for evalu

Association of trace element abnormalities and adverse outcomes in patients with acute heart failure.

BACKGROUND: Trace elements, including zinc, copper, and selenium may influence heart failure prognosis due to their roles in mitochondrial function. Previous studies have reported associations between individual trace element abnormalities-such as low serum zinc, high serum copper, and low selenium levels-and adverse clinical outcomes, including reduced exercise capacity in patients with heart failure. However, the impact of multiple trace element abnormalities remains poorly understood. This study aimed to explore the prevalence of these abnormalities, both individually and in combination, an

The interactome of the Bakers' yeast peroxiredoxin Tsa1 implicates it in redox regulation of intermediary metabolism, glycolysis, and zinc homeostasis.

Zinc (Zn) is an essential nutrient supporting a range of critical processes. In the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Zn deficiency induces a transcriptional response mediated by the Zap1 activator, which controls a regulon of ∼80 genes. A subset support Zn homeostasis by promoting Zn uptake and its distribution between compartments, while the remainder mediate an 'adaptive response' to enhance fitness of Zn-deficient (ZnD) cells. The peroxiredoxin Tsa1 is a Zap1-regulated adaptive factor essential for the growth of ZnD yeast. Tsa1 can function as an antioxidant peroxidase, protein chaperone, or

Phosphorus acquisition and pathogen defense: synergies versus trade-offs.

During their life cycle, plants encounter simultaneous biotic and abiotic stresses. A low availability of inorganic phosphorus (P) commonly limits plant growth in natural and agricultural ecosystems. Pathogen attacks pose risks to plant productivity and biodiversity, causing yield loss and ecosystem degradation. Plants evolved various strategies to cope with P limitation, which, in turn, affect their resistance to pathogens. However, a comprehensive understanding of how efficient plant P-acquisition strategies influence their pathogen resistance under P-limited conditions remains elusive. We h

Mineral nutrient acquisition under stress: Sensing, signaling, and transportation.

Plants commonly face abiotic stressors like drought, salinity, and limited nutrient availability which disrupt the homeostatic networks of mineral acquisition and hamper productivity. In this review we aim to clarify the molecular platforms by which plants sense and act in response to fluctuating availability of nitrogen and phosphorus under stress. Our data show that the dual-affinity nitrate transporter NRT1.1 functions as a sensor and transporter, controlling root architecture and downstream signaling through the TOR-NLP7-SnRK1 pathway to modulate nitrate homeostasis under water and nutrien

Association between maternal serum essential trace element concentration in early pregnancy and gestational diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) remains a major pregnancy metabolic issue. Although evidence suggested that essential trace elements (ETEs) may alter glycemic regulation during pregnancy, their associations with GDM remained uncertain. METHODS: From the Peking University Birth Cohort in Tongzhou (PKUBC-T) with a total of 5426 participants, we randomly selected 200 cases with GDM and 200 matched controls without GDM to conduct a nested case-control study. The matching was on maternal age ( ± 2 years) and gestational week at which the oral glucose tolerance test was performed. W

OsCK2 Phosphorylates OsSIZ1 to Regulate Phosphate Starvation Response and Defence Response in Rice.

Phosphorus is a crucial nutrient for the normal growth and development of rice. Enhancing the efficiency of phosphorus acquisition in plants is vital for optimising soil phosphorus utilisation. The SUMO E3 ligase OsSIZ1 is an important factor for regulating plant phosphorus acquisition and starvation response in rice. However, how its activity responds to Pi-supplied conditions remains unknown. In this study, we discovered that the mutations in OsCK2β3, which encodes a regulatory subunit of CK2, influenced the Pi starvation response. The global level of SUMOylation was found to decrease in Osc

Global impact of micronutrients in modern human evolution.

Micronutrients are essential components of the human diet, but dietary levels above or below their narrow, recommended range are harmful. Deficiencies increase the risk of stunted growth and metabolic, infectious, and respiratory disorders, and have likely been pervasive in human history, as local soils poor in micronutrients are widespread. Deficiencies are also common today, affecting approximately 2 billion people. Limited evidence exists for selenium, zinc, iodine, and iron deficiencies driving local adaptation in a few human populations, but the broader potential role of micronutrients in

Arabidopsis thaliana exhibits wide within-species variation in tolerance to boron limitation and root and shoot trait resilience associate with a pleiotropic locus.

To improve plant tolerance to suboptimal availability of the micronutrient boron (B), it is crucial to understand the mechanisms plants have evolved to tolerate B-limited conditions. We assessed temporal physiological, ionomic and molecular responses to B deficiency across 185 Arabidopsis thaliana accessions grown in soil-substrate in an automated phenotyping system and on agar plates. Whilst profound shoot- and root-growth inhibition was observed in most accessions under B limitation, seven highly B-deficiency tolerant accessions with < 20% reduced fresh and digital biomass accumulation were
