Responses to nutrient starvation in Pseudomonas putida KT2442: analysis of general cross-protection, cell shape, and macromolecular content.

The physiology of Pseudomonas putida KT2442 with respect to growth and carbon starvation was studied. During the transition from growth to nongrowth, the cell shape changes from cylindrical to spheric, a change which is accompanied by reductions in cell size, DNA and ribosome content, and the rate of total protein synthesis. In addition, a pattern of general cross-protection develops, which enables the cells to survive environmental stresses such as high and low temperatures, elevated osmolarity, solvents, and oxidative agents. Cultures are almost fully viable during 1 month of carbon, nitroge

Nutritional influences on linear growth: a general review.

The first section of this paper reviews what is known about the roles of specific nutrients in the general linear growth faltering that occurs in developing countries. Those reviewed are energy, protein, zinc, iron, copper, iodine and vitamin A. For none of these nutrients was there clear, consistent evidence that supplementation with the nutrient benefited linear growth. Rather, interventions with each specific nutrient had a positive effect on length gain in some studies, while in others these affected only weight gain or had no effect. Reasons for these conflicting results are suggested, in

[Role of malnutrition on immunity].

Although the relationship between starvation and reduced resistance to infection has been suggested by historical accounts of famines and pestilence and by recent epidemiologic studies, the concept of nutritional deficiency causing impairment of immunocompetence is relatively recent. In PEM (protein-energy malnutrition), most of the host defence mechanisms are breached, especially manifested in reduced cell-mediated immunity. One plausible reason is the reduction in mature fully differentiated T lymphocytes. Recent immunological methods made it possible to analyze its precise mechanism and pro

Prevention of esophageal cancer: the nutrition intervention trials in Linxian, China. Linxian Nutrition Intervention Trials Study Group.

In Linxian China, the esophageal/gastric cardia cancer mortality rates are among the highest in the world. There is suspicion that the population's chronic deficiencies of multiple micronutrients are etiologically involved. We conducted two randomized, placebo-controlled nutrition intervention trials to test the effects of vitamin and mineral supplements in lowering the rates of esophageal/gastric cancer. In the first trial, the dysplasia trial, 3318 adults with a cytological diagnosis of esophageal dysplasia received daily supplementation with 26 vitamins and minerals in doses typically 2-3 t

Iron deficiency: assessment during pregnancy and its importance in pregnant adolescents.

The assessment of iron deficiency in pregnancy requires the accurate determination of indicators that have significant within-subject variability. For instance, serum ferritin concentrations may vary by as much as 25% from one day to the next. Added to this uncertainty about biological variability is the influence of plasma volume expansion on concentration-dependent indexes such as ferritin, plasma iron, and hemoglobin. Multiple measurements of iron status are suggested, and, if this is not possible, within-subject variability needs to be included in the confidence of assigning individuals to

Protection of heme proteins by vitamin E, selenium, and beta-carotene against oxidative damage in rat heart, kidney, lung and spleen.

Effects of the combination of vitamin E, selenium, and beta-carotene on oxidative damage to rat heart, kidney, lung, and spleen were studied by measurement of the production of oxidized heme proteins (OHP) during spontaneous and prooxidant-induced oxidation. Male SD rats were fed with a vitamin E and selenium deficient diet or a diet supplemented with vitamin E, selenium, and beta-carotene. Homogenates of heart, kidney, lung, and spleen were incubated at 37 degrees C with and without the presence of bromotrichloromethane (CBrCl3). The diet supplemented with antioxidants showed a strong protect

Nutritional evaluation of copper-lysine and zinc-lysine complexes for chicks.

Three chick experiments were conducted to evaluate two mineral-Lys complexed products, Cu-Lys and Zn-Lys. Relative bioavailability of Lys, Cu, and Zn were assessed separately using diets specifically deficient in each of these nutrients and by employing criteria that respond in a straight-line fashion to supplementation with the nutrient in question. Common-intercept multiple linear regression (slope-ratio) of weight gain, bile Cu concentration, and total tibia Zn regressed on supplemental intake of Lys, Cu, and Zn, respectively, were used to assess bioavailability values relative to the stand

[Preliminary report on the results of nutrition prevention trials of cancer and other common diseases among residents in Linxian, China].

To examine whether vitamin/mineral supplementation may lower mortality and incidence from human cancer and mortality from other diseases as well as to provide the scientific basis and feasible approach for human cancer prevention and control, between 1982-1991 scientists from China and USA conducted two randomized, double-blind, and placebo-controlled nutrition intervention trials in Linxian, China, where the esophageal/gastric cardia cancer mortality rates are among the highest in the world and there is suspicion that the population's chronic deficiencies of multiple nutrients are etiological

Skin signs of nutritional disorders.

Children, especially infants, require adequate calories and nutrients to meet the high demands of normal growth and development; protein, essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals are all important in achieving this goal. Malnutrition results from deficiency in one or more of these basic nutrients. It may be caused by (1) insufficient dietary intake, (2) malabsorption, (3) poor utilization of nutrients, and (4) increased catabolism. A range of clinical and metabolic changes occurs as a result of profound and generalized abnormalities at a cellular level. Mucocutaneous changes constitute one

Treatment of iron-deficiency anemia complicated by scurvy and folic acid deficiency.

We present a case of a child with iron-deficiency anemia, folic acid deficiency, and scurvy. His anemia proved refractory to treatment with iron until he received both folic acid and vitamin C supplementation. This case illustrates the importance of the evaluation of ascorbic acid and folate status in treating iron-deficiency anemia initially refractory to iron supplementation, because multiple nutrient deficiencies may coexist.

Autophagy in yeast demonstrated with proteinase-deficient mutants and conditions for its induction.

For determination of the physiological role and mechanism of vacuolar proteolysis in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, mutant cells lacking proteinase A, B, and carboxypeptidase Y were transferred from a nutrient medium to a synthetic medium devoid of various nutrients and morphological changes of their vacuoles were investigated. After incubation for 1 h in nutrient-deficient media, a few spherical bodies appeared in the vacuoles and moved actively by Brownian movement. These bodies gradually increased in number and after 3 h they filled the vacuoles almost completely. During their accumula

Parenteral nutrition-related bone disease.

Parenteral nutrition (PN)-related bone disease remains a problem in patients of all ages. Understanding of the pathogenesis of PN-related bone disease is complicated by the effect of underlying illnesses, therapeutic interventions, and pre-existing nutrition deficiencies before the initiation of PN therapy. Interrelation of various nutrients, for example, calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D, in their effects on bone mineralization, demands simultaneous assessment of the role of multiple nutrients and increases the difficulty in defining the role of a single nutrient in the development of bone d

A review of magnesium intake in the elderly. A cause for concern?

Elderly people in the United States represent an emerging high risk group for nutritional deficiencies. A magnesium deficit in the elderly can occur due to inadequate nutrient intakes, multiple drug use, or altered gastrointestinal function. Magnesium has been targeted as a risk factor for elderly people and has been implicated in the aging process. Data presented in this review confirm decreased availability of magnesium in the food supply, lower intakes of magnesium by elderly people, and widespread supplementation practices. Conflicting data exist regarding levels of magnesium in the blood

Dietary methods in cardiovascular disease critique.

It is planned that a wide variety of questions related to nutrient intake and cardiovascular disease will be addressed in NHANES III. Given the scope of these questions and the number of different types of designs that may be utilized--cross-sectional, cohort, and case control--several different dietary methodologies will probably be needed within NHANES III. Assessment and ranking of current intake is a primary objective to the overall NHANES III design. The 24-hour recall will provide this assessment and maintain comparability with the previous extensive NHANES. In many instances, however, i

Trace element deficiencies in cattle.

Deficiency of cobalt, copper, iron, iodine, manganese, selenium, or zinc can cause a reduction in production. Reduced production occurs most commonly when a deficiency corresponds to the phases of growth, reproduction, or lactation. Because of environmental, nutrient, disease, genetic, and drug interactions, deficiencies of single or multiple elements can occur even when the levels recommended by the National Research Council for these nutrients are being fed. Additionally, random supplementation of trace elements above National Research Council recommendations is not justified because of the

Serum cholesterol and vitamins A and E in juvenile chronic arthritis.

Serum total cholesterol is decreased during acute infections and in adults with rheumatoid arthritis, probably partly because of enhanced lipid peroxidation. Oxidative stress also causes augmentation of inflammation and tissue damage in arthritic synovium. Therefore, concentrations of serum total cholesterol and the antioxidant vitamins A and E were studied in 125 children with juvenile chronic arthritis. Total serum cholesterol was significantly lower in the patients than in healthy children in most age groups and correlated with the markers of disease activity, haemoglobin and the erythrocyt

Dietary factors and their relation to respiratory symptoms. The Second National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

Dietary factors may influence inflammatory and antioxidant activity, and hence the development of chronic respiratory symptoms. To examine this hypothesis, the authors analyzed data from the Second National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES II). NHANES II was conducted on a sample representative of the civilian, noninstitutionalized US population, which included 9,074 white and black adults aged 30 years or older. Dietary factors were derived from serum levels and from a 24-hour dietary recall questionnaire. The authors examined the relations of these dietary factors to the prese

Geology, trace elements and health.

Both animal and vegetable life depend for their existence on appropriate amounts of various trace elements, albeit in very small amounts. This paper lists some of these trace elements and the ailments in which they play an important role. The elements discussed are gold, platinum, copper, lead, zinc, aluminium, silica, mercury, cadmium, selenium, arsenic, and iodine. The diseases involved range from multiple sclerosis, various cancers, arthritis, goitre, Down's Syndrome, and mental retardation. Less well known are Keshan, Alzheimer's, Itai-Itai, and Minamata diseases. Of particular interest in

Assessment of trace element status in humans.

Trace elements occur in the body in very small or 'trace' amounts. Deficiencies of essential trace elements produce multiple and diverse clinical signs and symptoms. These may arise from inadequate dietary intake, decreased bioavailability, iatrogenic factors, certain disease states in which decreased absorption, excessive excretion and/or utilization occurs, and physiological states in which trace element requirements are increased and/or body stores are reduced. This review discusses both the static and functional laboratory tests used for the assessment of chromium, copper, selenium, and zi

Geotoxicology of multiple sclerosis: the Henribourg, Saskatchewan, Cluster Focus. I. The water.

Some childhood-related, geographically-linked factor predisposes towards (or protects against) multiple sclerosis (MS). It is quite plausible that this factor could be one or more chemicals in the environment, and that chemical study of the environment or "focus" of an MS cluster might maximize the chances of detecting such an etiological link. The water chemistry of such a focus (Henribourg, Saskatchewan) was compared with North American norms, and with the chemistry of water from a nearby control area with a near-zero incidence of MS and of childhood homes of MS cases. Overall, the results s
