Curcumin and colorectal cancer: An update and current perspective on this natural medicine.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of most common malignancies worldwide and its incidence is still growing. In spite of recent advances in targeted therapies, their clinical efficacy has been limited, non-curative and unaffordable. A growing body of literature indicates that CRC is a multi-modal disease, where a variety of factors within the tumor microenvironment play a significant role in its pathogenesis. For instance, imbalance in gut microbial profiles and impaired intestinal barrier function contribute to the overall intestinal inflammation and initiation of CRC. Moreover, persistent chroni

Short-term social memory deficits in adult female mice exposed to tannery effluent and possible mechanism of action.

The accumulated organic residues in tannery-plant courtyards are an eating attraction to small rodents; however, the contact of these animals with these residues may change their social behavior. Thus, the aim of the present study is to investigate whether the exposure to tannery effluent (TE) can damage the social recognition memory of female Swiss mice, as well as to assess whether vitamin C supplementation could provide information about how TE constituents can damage these animals' memory. We have observed that resident females exposed to TE (without vitamin supplementation) did not explor

[Analysis of actual nutrition and energy expenditure in patients with circulatory system diseases in remission].

Actual nutrition assessment in overweight patients with hypertensive disease (HD) and coronary heart disease (CHD) in remission determined excess food rations in calorie content, nutrient composition imbalance, and inadequate intake of vitamins, mineral substances, and dietary fibers. This results in impaired metabolic processes. Nutrition optimization should be a constituent in the complex of maintenance therapy in patients with HD and CHD. Moreover, the patients need higher motor activity.

[Influence of vegetarian diet on serum values of homocysteine and total antioxidant status in children].

UNLABELLED: The vegetarian diet may play a preventive role in the development of chronic diseases such as coronary heart and cardiovascular disease. However increase of homocysteine (Hcy) concentration in peoples avoiding animal products may contribute to an increased atherosclerotic risk in these subjects. Recent evidence has suggested that role of hyperhomocysteinemia in atherogenesis is associated with process of autooxidation, which can promote the production of hydroxyl radicals, resulting in oxidative modification of low density lipoprotein and endothelium injury. The oxidant-antioxidant

Do we inherit or acquire mitochondrial dysfunction in the metabolic syndrome and Type 2 diabetes?

The rapid increase in the incidence of Type 2 diabetes mellitus as part of the metabolic syndrome in our current societies is largely the result of an increased caloric intake in combination with a sedentary lifestyle. Mitochondria are the organelles within our body that oxidize the constituents of our food, furthermore, they provide the energy for physical activity. An imbalance between energy supply and energy consumption at the mitochondrial level may be at the basis of the current epidemics of Type 2 diabetes. This review discusses underlying pathogenic mechanisms. In particular, it will f

Dietary imbalance in some communities of Transylvania.

The relationship between diet intake and nutritional needs may be the most important factor which influences the health status from a nutritional point of view. Essential for maintaining health status is to keep this two constituents in balance. To evaluate the diet and nutritional status, we enrolled in an observational cross-sectional study, a population of 312 people, 202 females and 110 males, categorized by age (20-40 years, 41-65 years and over 65 years) and by physical exertion (low, medium and high). The food intake was under reference values in the case of vegetable proteins (-9.99%),

The importance of (early) folate status to primary and secondary coronary artery disease prevention.

Folate, methionine, betaine, choline, zinc and Vitamins B(12), B(6) and B(2) are involved in one-carbon metabolism, which includes S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) substrated methylation. Inadequate enzyme activities and imbalances of substrates and cofactors in one-carbon metabolism, together referred to as the 'methyldietary' constituents, may cause homocysteine and S-adenosylhomocysteine accumulation. Hyperhomocysteinemia is associated with many disorders including coronary artery disease (CAD). CAD at adult age is also associated with low birth weight-induced 'programming', which prepares for un

Alteration of polyunsaturated fatty acid status and metabolism in health and disease.

Essential polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) cannot be synthesised in the body and must be ingested by food. A balanced intake of both n-6 and n-3 PUFA is essential for good health. PUFA are the basic constituents of phospholipid membranes and determine cellular membrane fluidity and modulate enzyme activities, carriers and membrane receptors. They are also precursors of active metabolites known collectively as eicosanoids (prostaglandins, prostacyclins, thromboxanes and leukotrienes) which regulate our cellular functions. Studies indicate that n-3 PUFA have anti-inflammatory, antithrombotic,

Glycerol hyperhydration in resting horses.

To determine whether administration of glycerol-containing solutions induces a state of transient hyperhydration in resting euhydrated horses, changes in plasma and urine constituents were measured in four horses for 1 h before and 5 h after nasogastric administration of each of four treatments (Experiment 1). Treatments were applied in a randomized fashion and included: (1) 1.0 g.kg(-)(1)glycerol in 8 L of water (G); (2) 8 L of water (W); (3) 8 L of 0.9% NaCl solution (S); and (4) 1.0 g.kg(-)(1)glycerol in 8 L of 0.9% NaCl solution (GS). In a subsequent study, voluntary water intake was measu

Functional food science and defence against reactive oxidative species.

This paper assesses critically the science base that underpins the argument that oxidative damage is a significant causative factor in the development of human diseases and that antioxidants are capable of preventing or ameliorating these disease processes. The assessment has been carried out under a number of headings, and some recommendations for future research are made based on the present day knowledge base. The knowledge database (1) Consideration of the basic science that underlies understanding of the role of free radicals in causing cellular pathologies, and the role of antioxidants i

A toxicological review of lactose to support clinical administration by inhalation.

Although lactose is widely used in the pharmaceutical industry as an excipient in preparations given by several routes of administration, including by inhalation, there is no comprehensive review of its toxicological properties. This document seeks to review the available oral preclinical and clinical safety data from the literature, together with that generated by Fisons in animals using the inhalation route. In animal toxicity studies, lactose has been administered primarily by the inhalation and dietary routes to the rat, dog and/or primate. Adverse findings, such as abdominal distension an

Polyunsaturated fatty acids, Part 1: Occurrence, biological activities and applications.

Polyunsaturated fatty acids form a unique class of food constituents that show a wide range of functions in biological systems. Investigations over the past two decades have uncovered their roles and those of their eicosanoid metabolites, and have highlighted their homeostatic functions in mammals. A growing number of common human medical conditions are thought to be traceable to dysfunctions in the eicosanoid system, which could in turn be due to imbalances in the intake and/or metabolism of polyunsaturated fatty acids. This, together with medical advances, has spurred the introduction of bio

Food and cancer.

There are good reasons to suspect that the quantity and quality of food influence both the overall risk of development of many forms of cancer and the types of cancer which occur most commonly. The evidence is briefly reviewed and the kinds of mechanisms that may be responsible listed. The striking effects of dietary restriction on cancer risk in laboratory rats and mice and the possibility that dietary restraint may be beneficial in man are discussed. Recent laboratory evidence that carcinogens may be formed in food during cooking is mentioned. Finally, the importance of avoiding mineral imba
