Background: Multiple studies demonstrated that nutritional risk and malnutrition were associated with prolonged hospitalization, extended rehabilitation duration, and increased mortality among patients with cardiovascular diseases (CVD). However, current research on dietary behaviors and nutritional status in hospitalized CVD patients remains insufficient. Objective: This study systematically evaluated the concordance between cardiology inpatients' and clinicians' subjective nutritional status assessments and objective energy and protein intake achievement rates, while comprehensively investig

Background/Objectives: Poor nutritional status and cachexia have been well-documented as predictors of adverse outcomes in individuals with chronic heart failure (HF). However, despite obesity being a common observation in this patient population, a growing body of evidence indicates that these individuals may still suffer from nutrient deficiencies and malnutrition. This study aimed to characterize the food and nutrient intake of participants enrolled in the Pro-HEART clinical trial-a study evaluating dietary interventions in overweight and obese individuals with HF-and to compare their consu

Nutrition is considered to play a key role in the multifactorial development of frailty. Conversely, frailty also affects nutrition. The aim of this article is to describe the interactions between these two entities in detail and to derive nutritional recommendations. On the one hand undernutrition and the resulting loss of body weight and muscle mass contribute to the development of sarcopenia and thus to the development of frailty. On the other hand obesity is associated with an increased risk of frailty even in middle age, presumably due to the accompanying chronic low-grade inflammation. A

Chronic pancreatitis (CP) precipitates complex malnutrition through synergistic mechanisms: exocrine pancreatic insufficiency-driven maldigestion, duodenal or pancreatobiliary strictures limiting nutrient flow, cholestasis impairing micelle formation, alcohol-related anorexia, pain-induced hypophagia, proteolytic catabolism from type 3c diabetes, and a chronic inflammatory milieu that accelerates sarcopenia and bone demineralisation. Consequent calorie-protein depletion, micronutrient and fat-soluble vitamin deficits, and metabolic derangements markedly amplify morbidity. Pancreatic enzyme rep

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Diet and obesity contribute to approximately 50% of tumor development. Therefore, nutrition plays a key role not only in cancer prevention but also in determining prognosis. Notably, between 30% and 90% of cancer patients experience malnutrition. Furthermore, the hypercatabolic state induced by tumors leads to widespread protein degradation, clinically manifesting as sarcopenia or cachexia, and ultimately accelerating mortality. This narrative review examines the potential role of amino acids (AAs) in inhibiting tumor growth and counteracting protein-energy malnutrition-

Malnutrition afflicts millions of the world's children and predisposes to death from diarrhea and infectious diseases. Children with severe acute malnutrition (SAM) are at highest risk. Our review of the endocrinology and metabolomics of SAM implicates critical roles for white adipose tissue and its regulatory hormones and growth factors in the adaptation to nutritional deprivation and the restoration of metabolic homeostasis: white adipose provides substrates and energy for hepatic glucose production and cardiopulmonary and central nervous system function, and products of fat metabolism inhib

INTRODUCTION: Oral nutritional supplements (ONS) have been reported to improve nutritional status, quality of life and clinical outcomes in many patient groups. This systematic review investigated the effects of high-protein ONS (HPONS), ≥20% energy from protein, on clinical outcomes in cancer patients.
METHODS: A systematic review (searches to January 2025) identified 32 publications reporting results from 29 randomised controlled trials (RCTs) (n = 2,279) of HPONS (mean daily intake 580 kcal, 34 g protein, ranging from 5 to 365 days) alongside dietary intake in patients with gastrointestina

Background and Objectives: Nutritional status is essential for outcomes in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Incremental HD (iHD) may help preserve residual renal function, but its effect on nutrition and body composition is unclear. Nutritional ultrasound (NUS) offers a non-invasive way to assess muscle and fat, complementing methods like BIA. This study compared nutritional status using morphofunctional assessment in patients on iHD versus conventional HD (cHD). Material and Methods: This single-center observational cross-sectional study included 74 stable adult HD patients (>3 months). Patients w

Patients with pancreatic cancer frequently present with protein-energy malnutrition, which can negatively affect prognosis and treatment tolerance. We report the clinical case of a 55-year-old man with locally advanced pancreatic adenocarcinoma, deemed unresectable at diagnosis, who experienced severe weight loss (-23 kg in the last 4 months) and marked clinical deterioration. The prescription of supportive parenteral nutrition (PN) allowed stabilization of body weight, improvement of fatigue, and the resumption of chemotherapy cycles that had previously been interrupted due to worsening clini

INTRODUCTION: Parathyroid hormone (PTH) induces browning of adipose tissue, leading to increased resting energy expenditure and loss of adipose and muscle tissues in animal models of kidney failure. However, its clinical significance in humans remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate whether PTH-lowering therapy with upacicalcet, a novel injectable calcimimetic, affects serum albumin levels as a surrogate marker of protein-energy wasting in patients on hemodialysis with secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT).

OBJECTIVES: Malnutrition and lean tissue loss are common in dialysis patients and are linked to increased morbidity and mortality. Lean Tissue Index (LTI), a measure of muscle mass adjusted for height, offers an objective assessment of nutritional status. However, its relationship with conventional nutritional markers remains poorly defined.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 365 adult dialysis patients from multiple centers. Baseline data included anthropometrics, body composition (LTI), and nutritional biomarkers: albumin, prealbumin, Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI),

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition is highly prevalent among gastrointestinal (GI) cancer patients and is associated with poor clinical outcomes. Early identification of nutritional risk is essential to optimize patient care prior to treatment initiation.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of malnutrition using Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA) and examine its association with demographic, clinical, anthropometric, and dietary intake as risk factors in newly diagnosed, treatment naïve GI cancer patients.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, i

Children with sickle cell disease (SCD) are at increased risk of growth faltering due to elevated energy demands that are often unmet by dietary intake. Effective strategies to address growth faltering emphasize routine growth monitoring, dietary assessment, and screening for food insecurity. Management includes higher-calorie, higher-protein diets, addressing food insecurity, and targeted micronutrient supplementation. Treatments, such as hydroxyurea and transfusions, may further support healthy growth patterns. Referrals to dietitians, pediatric gastroenterologists, and endocrinologists are

Single Anastomosis Duodeno-ileostomy with Sleeve Gastrectomy (SADI-S) is an emerging bariatric procedure that can sometimes lead to severe malnutrition. This report describes two cases of conversion surgery for post-SADI-S malnutrition and reviews management strategies. Both patients, who had undergone sleeve gastrectomy followed by SADI-S for weight recurrence, developed severe protein-energy malnutrition with hypoalbuminemia (1.6-1.8 g/dL) requiring parenteral nutrition, which normalized following conversion surgery. They underwent laparoscopic conversion to Roux-en-Y duodenojejunal bypass w

RATIONALE: Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by persistent energy restriction, distorted body image perception, and intense fear of weight gain. It frequently leads to severe malnutrition and multisystemic impairment. Prolonged energy deficiency disrupts hematopoietic function, resulting in pancytopenia. Refeeding syndrome represents a significant complication during nutritional support for anorexia nervosa patients, with hypophosphatemia potentially causing further hematopoietic damage.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 32-year-old female patient with anorexia nervosa was admitted for "

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD), risk factor reversals occur where obesity and elevated LDL cholesterol paradoxically associate with improved survival. This review synthesizes recent advances in understanding these obesity and lipid paradoxes, integrating insights from body composition, inflammation, and metabolism.
RECENT FINDINGS: Observational studies have shown stage-specific survival advantages of obesity, mainly in hemodialysis populations and among patients with inflammation. The lipid paradox is also largely explained by the confounding effect
