Association Between PS-OCT Derived Polarimetric Entropy and RPE Cellular Metrics Measured With Adaptive Optics Imaging in Retinitis Pigmentosa.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between entropy values derived from the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) layer using polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT) and RPE cellular metrics obtained by adaptive optics transscleral flood illumination (AO-TFI), including cell density, spacing, regularity, and dispersion. We further aimed to determine which cellular structural alterations in retinitis pigmentosa (RP) are reflected by entropy. METHODS: Healthy controls and patients with RP who underwent both PS-OCT and AO-TFI imaging were include

High-dose vitamin C supplementation in patients undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: A pilot randomized, triple-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

PURPOSE: Allogenic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) is a curative treatment for hematological disorders but often results in micronutrients deficiency and complications. Vitamin C, a potent antioxidant, may improve endothelial function, tissue protection, and immune recovery. This study evaluated the effects of early high-dose vitamin C supplementation on plasma vitamin C levels and post-HSCT complications. METHODS: In this pilot, triple-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 31 adult allo-HSCT patients were randomized to receive intravenous vitamin C (50 mg/kg/day) or placebo fr

Imaging hematomas in unforeseen sites - unveiling 2 cases of pediatric scurvy.

BACKGROUND: Scurvy, a nutritional disorder resulting from chronic deficiency in vitamin C, is now a rare occurrence in contemporary times. Nevertheless, instances can still arise in pediatric patients, typically linked to inadequate nutrition and socioeconomic factors. Diagnosing scurvy proves challenging due to its infrequency and nonspecific symptoms. Clinical and radiographic findings, coupled with low serum vitamin C levels, are crucial for diagnosis. Pediatric scurvy often exhibits prominent musculoskeletal manifestations with varying presentations. CASE PRESENTATION: We present two cases

Vitamin C-deficient gulo-/- mice exhibit increased susceptibility to Helicobacter pylori colonization and gastric pathology.

Low dietary intake of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) has been associated with unfavorable clinical outcomes of Helicobacter pylori infection in human studies. However, experimental evidence regarding the influence of host vitamin C status on H. pylori colonization remains inconsistent across animal models. In this study, we generated vitamin C-deficient L-gulono-γ-lactone oxidase-deficient (gulo-/-) mice on an FVB genetic background to evaluate host susceptibility to H. pylori infection under defined vitamin C supplementation conditions. FVB gulo-/- mice were orally infected with H. pylori and prov

Catalytic Reduction of H2O2 by Polyvinylpyrrolidone Nickel Oxide Nanozymatic Activity and Colorimetric Sensing of Ascorbic Acid.

Ascorbic acid (AA) or vitamin C is an important biomolecule that plays a crucial role in biological and physiological systems. Deficiency and/or excess of AA in the body can lead to severe diseases such as scurvy and gastrointestinal complications. Therefore, it is crucial to monitor the levels of AA in the body and supplements. Polyvinylpyrrolidone nickel oxide nanoparticles (PVP-NiONPs) are prepared and evaluated for their potential as nanozymes with peroxidase-like activity. o-Phenylenediamine (OPD) was used as a chromogen in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. The oxidized OPD was produced

Vitamins and oral mucosal diseases: From bench to the bedside.

Vitamins are essential biocatalysts that have wide-ranging functions in supporting cellular metabolism. Vitamin deficiencies can significantly impact oral health, manifesting in oral mucosal and periodontal conditions. Deficiencies in the vitamin B complex are associated with glossitis, angular cheilitis, and recurrent aphthous stomatitis. Vitamin C deficiency leads to scurvy-related periodontal issues, whereas vitamin A insufficiency predisposes to oral epithelial keratinization abnormalities such as dry mouth and susceptibility to Candida. A reduction in vitamin D levels is linked to the ris

Maternal Dyslipidaemia Aggravates Offspring Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease.

Paediatric metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and steatohepatitis (MASH) display a distinct and severe histopathology. Maternal metabolic status may program offspring susceptibility to MASLD. This study investigated if maternal dyslipidaemia and low vitamin C (VitC) status influence offspring MASLD using a validated guinea pig model. Thirty female guinea pigs received a low-fat (LF) diet until pregnancy was confirmed, then remained on LF or switched to a high-fat (HF) diet with or without reduced VitC. Offspring were evaluated at birth and after 10 weeks on postwe

Atypical Presentation of Scurvy in the Oral Cavity.

Vitamin C is crucial for normal physiology and function. Severely insufficient levels of vitamin C can disrupt these processes, resulting in scurvy, a condition characterized by compromised collagen production and tissue degradation. The purpose of this report is to present a complex case of a pediatric patient with autism spectrum disorder exhibiting nonspecific oral lesions. Histopathological examination of the lesions revealed granulomatous inflammation, suggesting an initial diagnosis of orofacial granulomatosis, with a recommendation to rule out Crohn's disease. Further investigation conf

Helicobacter pylori Infection and Anemia: The Potential Role of Vitamin C and Vitamin B12.

Anemia is a major global public health problem and is most commonly associated with iron deficiency; however, deficiencies in other micronutrients, including vitamin B12, may also contribute to its development. Increasing evidence suggests that Helicobacter pylori infection may influence the occurrence of anemia through several mechanisms related to alterations in the gastric environment. Chronic gastric inflammation and increased gastric pH associated with H. pylori infection may impair the absorption of non-heme iron and reduce the concentration of vitamin C in gastric juice. Since vitamin C
