BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at risk for vitamin C (VitC) deficiency.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate VitC status and its determinants across the spectrum of CKD and healthy individuals.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we measured plasma VitC concentrations (<10 μmol/L = deficient, 10‒35 μmol/L = inadequate) in 62 individuals on dialysis, 41 with CKD stage 4/5, 42 kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) (together: CKD population), and in 447 living kidney donors, and 385 healthy controls (together: healthy population). In the CKD population, we assessed

BACKGROUND: Delayed wound healing following implant placement surgery is an uncommon complication, usually attributed to systemic (smoking and alcohol), local (severely inflamed tissues), or technical (poor suturing) factors. However, delayed wound healing after implant placement caused by severe hypovitaminosis C has not been previously documented.
METHODS: This report describes the case of a 40-year-old systemically healthy male who developed delayed wound healing after implant placement, despite having quit smoking 10 months prior to the uneventfully completed surgery and having received s

This case report describes a woman in her late 50s with reversible pulmonary hypertension (PH) due to scurvy, a rare vitamin C (ascorbic acid) deficiency in the context of a long-standing eating disorder. The patient presented with cachexia, severe dyspnoea, fatigue and oedema. Initial tests showed pre-capillary PH with significantly reduced cardiac output (CO), while investigations ruled out common PH causes. Nutritional evaluation revealed a severe deficiency in vitamin C and mild vitamin B1 deficiency. Treatment with oral vitamin supplementation, diuretics and psychiatric support led to rap

Superoxide dismutase 1 (Sod1) and peroxiredoxin 4 (Prdx4) double knockout (DKO) causes symptoms similar to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) even at younger ages. This study revealed that DKO mice exhibited high mortality, and surviving DKO mice developed hepatocellular carcinoma within the first year of life. Administration of physiological doses of L-ascorbate (Asc; 1.5 mg/mL) in drinking water reduced mortality and effectively prevented tumor development. Oxidative stress due to SOD1 deficiency and endoplasmic reticulum stress due to PRDX4 deficiency may promote NASH, ultimately leading

BACKGROUND: Vitamin C (VC) is a water-soluble, essential micronutrient with multiple important physiological functions. Numerous studies have shown that VC deficiency is closely associated with adverse clinical outcomes in critically ill patients. Due to the extreme oxidative stress and inflammatory response associated with sepsis and its complications, which lead to a rapid depletion of VC. This study aims to explore whether VC supplementation can reduce the mortality of patients with sepsis-induced myocardial injury (SIMI). METHODS: This study used the MIMIC-IV database to extract data of pa

BACKGROUND: Young South African women face a double-burden of overweight or obesity and iron deficiency, with the former predicting the latter. Omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (LCPUFA) supplementation can reduce inflammation. It is uncertain if this effect extends to adiposity-related inflammation, thereby reducing hepcidin secretion and improving iron absorption.
OBJECTIVES: Using stable iron isotopes, we determined the effect of omega-3 LCPUFA supplementation on fractional iron absorption (FIA) from a meal containing iron as ferrous sulfate without and with ascorbic acid (AA).

Naphthalene toxicity is a rare but serious cause of methemoglobinemia and hemolysis, particularly in patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, in whom methylene blue is contraindicated. We present a case of a 6-year-old girl with a family history of G6PD deficiency who developed cyanosis, jaundice, dark urine, and an oxygen saturation of 50% after ingesting a mothball. Laboratory findings confirmed hemolytic anemia with suspected methemoglobinemia. Methylene blue was avoided, and initial treatment with high-flow oxygen, ascorbic acid, and N-acetylcysteine failed to imp

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The guinea pig is a unique experimental model because of the evolutionary loss of the GULO gene, which encodes an enzyme involved in vitamin C synthesis. Since vitamin C plays an essential role in collagen biochemistry, numerous studies have investigated the effects of pre- and postnatal vitamin C deficiency. However, only a few studies, including ours, have indicated a possible link between vitamin C deprivation and potential weakening of the basement membrane, which may lead to significant alterations in brain structure.
METHODS: The experiment included guinea pig foe

BACKGROUND: Scurvy is an uncommon disease in developed countries caused by deficiency of vitamin C. We present a case of scurvy in a 14-year-old male with autism with both novel presentation and imaging findings. This case had the novel presentation of lower limb deep vein thrombosis (DVT) secondary to compression of the external iliac vein from large bilateral iliac wing subperiosteal hematomas. Subperiosteal hematoma is a well-recognised feature of scurvy but large and bilateral pelvic subperiosteal hematoma causing DVT has not previously been described.

Scurvy is caused by vitamin C deficiency and is often thought of as an ancient malady. However, it still afflicts present-day patients with insufficient nutrition, excessive alcohol consumption and disorders of absorption. Scurvy is traditionally characterised by ecchymosis, petechiae, haemorrhages, poor wound healing, myalgias and arthralgias, but it can also present with non-specific symptoms, including mood changes, fatigue, malaise and dyspnoea. Although scurvy can present with signs of excess bleeding, it does not involve blood clotting. We present a case of concurrent scurvy and pulmonar

Scurvy is a disease caused by vitamin C deficiency. Although rare, in recent years, the number of scurvy cases in children with eating disorders has increased. Its manifestations are varied because vitamin C is a cofactor in numerous processes, such as collagen synthesis. The typical skin manifestations include petechiae, bruising, and hyperkeratosis. Mucosal involvement manifests as gingivitis with hypertrophy, bleeding, and loss of teeth. The diagnosis is based on clinical findings and may be confirmed by measuring plasma vitamin C levels. The objective of this study was to describe a cohort

BACKGROUND: In the early literature, unintentional vitamin C deficiency in humans was associated with heart failure. Experimental vitamin C deficiency in guinea pigs caused enlargement of the heart. The purpose of this study was to collect and analyze case reports on vitamin C and pulmonary hypertension.
METHODS: We searched Pubmed and Scopus for case studies in which vitamin C deficiency was considered to be the cause of pulmonary hypertension. We selected reports in which pulmonary hypertension was diagnosed by echocardiography or catheterization, for any age, sex, or dosage of vitamin C. W

Liver injury and progressive liver failure are severe life-threatening complications in sepsis, further worsening the disease and leading to death. Macrophages and their mediated inflammatory cytokine storm are critical regulators in the occurrence and progression of liver injury in sepsis, for which effective treatments are still lacking. l-Ascorbic acid 6-palmitate (L-AP), a food additive, can inhibit neuroinflammation by modulating the phenotype of the microglia, but its pharmacological action in septic liver damage has not been fully explored. We aimed to investigate L-AP's antisepticemia

Outcomes after adjustable gastric banding (AGB) were unsatisfactory and many devices need to be removed for dysphagia. Vitamin C and thiamin deficiency are rare conditions in industrialized countries. Patients undergoing AGB removal (90% for dysphagia) from 2021 to 2023 (laparoscopic 15 and robotic 5) were tested for vitamin C and thiamin levels. Twenty patients (8 m/12 f median aged 56 (range 33.6-79.4) were included. BMI at AGB removal was 39.7 (range 24.4-50.1) kg/m2. Only 20% of patients had normal thiamin levels, 30% had low levels, 20% were deficient, and 30% were critically low. Only 25
