In Vitro Screening and Characterization of Feline-Derived Lactic Acid Bacteria as Potential Probiotic Candidates with Bile Salt Hydrolase Activity and Cholesterol-Removal Capacity.

Feline obesity is an increasingly prevalent health concern and is closely associated with metabolic disorders and intestinal dysbiosis. This study aimed to screen feline-derived lactic acid bacteria (LAB) for bile salt hydrolase activity, in vitro cholesterol-removal capacity, and selected probiotic-associated characteristics. Approximately 700 LAB isolates were obtained from fecal samples of healthy domestic cats and evaluated for bile salt hydrolase (BSH) activity, among which 105 isolates were identified as BSH-positive. Further screening was performed based on BSH activity, cholesterol-rem

Hypoplastic lateral rectus muscle in a 39-year-old female with esotropia.

PURPOSE: Congenital hypoplasia of the extraocular muscles is a rare cause of strabismus. This article aims to report the case of a 39-year-old female with esotropia and a hypoplastic lateral rectus muscle (LRM). METHODS: Case report. RESULTS: The patient presented with esotropia measuring 35 prism diopters (PD), no evidence of stereoptic vision, and an otherwise normal examination. No surgery had ever been performed on her LRMs. During surgery for bilateral LRM resection, her left LRM was revealed to be severely hypoplastic, allowing for muscle hooks to be visible under the muscle sheath. Tumor or Inflammation? How Multi-Modality Image Fusion and Shear Wave Elastography Can Help Solve the Diagnostic Dilemma.

Differentiating intraocular tumors from inflammatory conditions remains a major diagnostic challenge in ophthalmology, particularly in masquerade syndromes where clinical and imaging features overlap. Despite advances in ocular imaging, no single modality provides sufficient diagnostic specificity. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on optical imaging modalities, ultrasonography, and elastography, focusing on their complementary roles in intraocular disease characterization, with emphasis on shear wave elastography (SWE) within a multimodal framework. Conventional imaging provi

A cardiac debut: Myocarditis revealing seronegative primary Sjögren's syndrome in a young woman-A case report.

Myocarditis as the inaugural manifestation of primary Sjögren's syndrome is exceptionally rare, and its occurrence in a seronegative patient without prominent sicca features represents a particularly challenging diagnostic scenario. We report a 20-year-old woman presenting with chest pain and inflammatory polyarthralgia, in whom echocardiography revealed moderate biventricular systolic dysfunction and cardiac MRI confirmed active myocarditis fulfilling the 2018 Lake Louise criteria. In the absence of anti-SSA, anti-SSB, and ANA, the diagnosis of seronegative primary Sjögren's syndrome was esta

Associations of Accelerated DNA Methylation Aging Algorithms with Chronic Liver Disease and All-Cause Mortality.

Background: Chronic liver disease (CLD) represents a substantial global health challenge, with significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Biological aging may be involved in CLD-related outcomes, but the associations of diverse DNA methylation (DNAm) aging algorithms with CLD phenotypes and long-term mortality remain incompletely characterized. Methods: Using a US nationally representative cohort, we analyzed 12 DNAm aging algorithms in 2522 adults aged ≥50. CLD was classified into viral, alcohol-related, metabolic syndrome (MetS)-related liver disease, or uncharacterized groups. Advanced

ADH1B and ALDH2 polymorphisms and restless legs syndrome during pregnancy: A cross-sectional study during 2023-2025.

OBJECTIVE: The prevalence of restless legs syndrome (RLS) among Japanese pregnant women surveyed from 2020 to 2021 was 17.2%, which is higher than that in the general adult population. The onset of this condition involves various factors against a background of genetic predisposition. The presence of the ALDH2*2 allele has been linked to Parkinson's disease, but its association with RLS remains unexamined. This study aimed to clarify the relationship between ALDH2 polymorphism as well as ADH1B polymorphism-already reported to be associated with RLS-and RLS in pregnant women. METHODS: This stu

Adaptive maintenance after incretin-induced weight loss: Moving beyond the continue-or-stop paradigm.

INTRODUCTION: Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists and dual GLP-1/glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) receptor agonists have transformed obesity treatment, but weight regain after dose reduction or discontinuation remains a major clinical challenge. Post-treatment regain may reflect the re-emergence of biological pressures favouring weight restoration rather than treatment failure. METHODS: This was a narrative perspective examining evidence from randomized withdrawal and maintenance trials of incretin-based obesity medications and emerging pharmacological, behavio

Pilot of a Micro-Randomized Factorial Trial of Self-Monitoring Feedback in a Behavioral Weight Loss Intervention.

BACKGROUND: The provision of self-monitoring feedback has been demonstrated to improve weight loss program outcomes; however, there is little evidence to support how this feedback should be delivered. Micro-randomized factorial trial designs can examine the proximal impact of intervention components, but their feasibility and acceptability in the context of behavioral weight management programs remain unknown. METHODS: The current pilot study evaluated the feasibility and acceptability of procedures for a micro-randomized factorial trial designed to optimize the provision of self-monitoring f

Omega-3 supplementation shows no clear benefit for fat-free mass or muscle strength in healthy adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

Omega-3 fatty acids (n-3 FAs) are polyunsaturated FAs incorporated into cell-membrane phospholipids and have been proposed to exert anabolic and anti-inflammatory effects. This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the effects of n-3 FAs supplementation on fat-free mass (FFM) and muscle strength in healthy adults without obesity. PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, and Web of Science were searched from inception to 25 February 2026. Randomized placebo-controlled trials of isolated n-3 FAs supplementation were eligible. Study selection was conducted using Rayyan; data were extracted in Microsoft

Genome-wide association meta-analysis of eating behavior traits revealed one susceptibility locus for emotional eating.

In order to identify new and genome-wide significant loci for eating behavior traits (cognitive restraint, uncontrolled eating and emotional eating), we conducted a meta-GWAS with seven studies of European ancestry (n = 11,250). Eating behavior was assessed using the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire. Genotype effects of single studies were estimated using additive models adjusting for age, sex, BMI, and principal components and single study results were combined by fixed-effect meta-analysis.For cognitive restraint and uncontrolled eating, no genome-wide significant association could be detec
