Ultrasound Evaluation of a Single Treatment With a Temperature Controlled Multi-Frequency Monopolar Radio Frequency Device for the Improvement of Localized Adiposity on the Abdomen and Flanks.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Energy modalities used for fat reduction include cryotherapy, focused and unfocused ultrasound, radiofrequency, and laser. Two devices have been proven to reduce fat layer thickness using ultrasound as measurement after a single treatment. We hypothesized that a novel, high frequency monopolar radiofrequency device could increase the fat temperature enough to reduce its thickness as measured by ultrasound, without excessively increasing the temperature of the skin, leading to a safe, tolerable, and clinically relevant reduction of fat. Carboxytherapy-Induced Fat loss is Associated with VEGF-Mediated Vascularization.

BACKGROUND: Carboxytherapy is the transcutaneous administration of CO2 gas for therapeutic purposes. Although this non-surgical procedure has been widely used for reducing localized adiposity, its effectiveness on fat loss in obese patients and its underlying mechanisms remain unclear. METHODS: C57BL/6 mice were fed with a high-fat diet for 8 weeks to generate obese animal models. Obese mice were randomly assigned to two groups: One group was administered air to both inguinal fat pads (air/air), and the other group was treated with air to the left inguinal fat pad and with CO2 to the right in

Cryolipolysis: patient selection and special considerations.

Cryolipolysis is considered a safe and effective procedure, with high patient satisfaction rates, especially when compared to other procedures for localized adiposity, such as high-intensity focused ultrasound and shock waves. Although this statement is present in the literature, the importance of the selection of suitable patients for this type of treatment is not well known. The objective of this study was to discuss the criteria to be considered in the selection of patients who are candidates for cryolipolysis and assess their profile regarding their anthropometric data, age, skin character

Pre-treatment with berberine enhances effect of 5-fluorouracil and cisplatin in HEP2 laryngeal cancer cell line.

Many patients with neurological disorders, such as Ataxia, do not have easy access to neurologists, -especially those living in remote localities and developing/underdeveloped countries. Ataxia is a degenerative disease of the nervous system that surfaces as difficulty with motor control, such as walking imbalance. Previous studies have attempted automatic diagnosis of Ataxia with the help of wearable biomarkers, Kinect, and other sensors. These sensors, while accurate, do not scale efficiently well to naturalistic deployment settings. In this study, we propose a method for identifying ataxic

Nordic walking increases circulating VEGF more than traditional walking training in postmenopause.

OBJECTIVES: Nordic walking (NW) is widely practiced by postmenopausal women. Its effects are peculiar owing to the involvement of more muscle groups than in traditional walking training (WT). Since mechanical load promotes secretion of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) from both skeletal muscle and muscle endothelium, the aim of the study was to compare the effect of NW and WT on VEGF levels. METHOD: Thirty postmenopausal women were randomly assigned to NW or WT. Both groups trained 40-50 min/day, three times per week, at a mean intensity of 12 on a 15-category scale of the ratings of

IDENTIFICATION OF POTENTIAL MARKERS FOR CUSHING DISEASE.

OBJECTIVE: Cushing disease (CD) causes a wide variety of nonspecific symptoms, which may result in delayed diagnosis. It may be possible to uncover unusual combinations of otherwise common symptoms using International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) codes. Our aim was to identify and evaluate dyads of clinical symptoms or conditions associated with CD. METHODS: We conducted a matched case-control study using a commercial healthcare insurance claims database designed to compare the relative risk (RR) of individual conditions and dyad combinations of

Lipedema: diagnostic and management challenges.

Lipedema is an uncommon disorder characterized by localized adiposity of the lower extremities, often occurring in females with a family history of the condition. The adiposity extends from hips to ankles and is typically unresponsive to weight loss. In addition to the aesthetic deformity, women also describe pain in the lower extremities, particularly with pressure, as well as easy bruising. Although the condition is well described, it is relatively rare and often misdiagnosed. The purpose of this review is to describe the initial evaluation and diagnosis of lipedema and discuss treatment opt

A CE-Marked Drug Used for Localized Adiposity Reduction: A 4-Year Experience.

BACKGROUND: Injectable fat-reducing therapies are not an alternative to liposuction. Rather, they may be best suited for patients who are unwilling or unable to undergo surgical reduction of small collections of fat, and for patients who desire touchups for liposuction-induced irregularities. OBJECTIVES: The authors report their 4-year experience with a novel injectable CE-marked drug, used in an off-label manner. METHODS: Between October 2009 and November 2013, 186 patients were treated by injection of an adipocitolytic solution in 1 of 4 private Italian aesthetic facilities, by 1 of 4 inde

Evaluation of ultrasound combined with chitosan for the control of weight and local fat in mice.

Ultrasound (US) has recently been used to reduce localized adiposity in humans. The study described here evaluated the combined use of chitosan, which is used to treat hyperlipidemic diseases and fatty liver, and US to control weight and local fat deposition in normal mice over a 5-wk experimental period. Female ICR mice were randomly divided into four groups (n = 5 animals per group): (1) control, (2) US only, (3) chitosan only and (4) chitosan + US. Body weight, epididymal fat pad and intra-abdominal fat thickness (via US imaging) and plasma concentrations of high-density lipoprotein cholest

Synergistic effects of cryolipolysis and shock waves for noninvasive body contouring.

BACKGROUND: Excess body fat, localized adiposity, and cellulite represent important social problems. To date, techniques using radiofrequencies, cavitation and noncavitation ultrasound, and carbon dioxide have been studied as treatments for noninvasive body contouring. Ice-Shock Lipolysis is a new noninvasive procedure for reducing subcutaneous fat volume and fibrous cellulite in areas that normally would be treated by liposuction. It uses a combination of acoustic waves and cryolipolysis. Shock waves, used normally in the treatment of renal calculi and musculoskeletal disorders, are focused o

Phospholipids do not have lipolytic activity. A critical review.

This article re-examines and refutes the theories of intra-adipocyte lipolysis activated by phosphatidylcholine and by phospholipids in general, when injected into adipose tissue to reduce localized adiposity. These theories have not been confirmed and at times they conflict with current, although incomplete, knowledge relative to adipocyte metabolism. In particular, those regarding adipose tissues with little-known biochemical characteristics such as the primary localized adiposities. The use of the term 'lipolysis' is considered inappropriate; instead, these types of treatments should be ind

Abdominoplasty without panniculus undermining and resection: analysis and 3-year follow-up of 97 consecutive cases.

BACKGROUND: Traditional abdominoplasty, with or without lipoplasty, can achieve pleasing aesthetic results but is associated with serious postoperative complications. OBJECTIVE: We describe an abdominoplasty procedure that combines resection of excess skin with lipoplasty but without panniculus undermining or resection. METHODS: The redundant pannus was marked, and the dermis in this region was resected, but the underlying subcutaneous fat, connective tissues, and all vessels were preserved. Lipoplasty of the abdominal wall was performed at a plane below Scarpa's fascia, allowing the cutaneo

Localized adiposity of the thyroid, clinically mimicking an adenoma.

A case of localized adiposity of the thyroid in a 35-year-old woman with a long history of steroid therapy for nephrotic syndrome is reported. A well-demarcated yellowish mass measuring 2 cm in diameter was found in the upper portion of the right lobe of the thyroid. Microscopically, this lesion was composed of mature adipose tissue partially mixed with thyroid tissue and had no distinct capsule. The nontumorous thyroid tissue showed features of Hashimoto's thyroiditis. At least two factors-hamartomatous malformation and metabolic disturbance-may be involved in the histogenesis of this localiz
