Screen time trajectories from 18 months to 3 years and dental caries at age 3 years: a population-based cohort study in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Screen habits change rapidly in toddlerhood, but whether changes in screen exposure are associated with early childhood caries and obesity remains unclear. METHODS: We used linked routine child health check-up records at 18 months and 3 years in Okinawa, Japan (2014-2019). Children were categorized into four screen time trajectory groups based on routine screen time at 18 months (yes/no) and screen time >1 h/day at age 3 (yes/no). The primary analysis included children with no reported screen use at age 3 years as 0 h/day (≤1 h/day). Dental caries and obesity were assessed at the

Metabolically healthy obesity in children and adolescents: A misleading label?

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The concept of metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) remains debated, particularly in pediatric populations. Beyond traditional risk factors, evaluating high-density lipoprotein (HDL) functionality may provide further insight into cardiometabolic risk in this population. The aim of this study was to assess cardiometabolic alterations in pediatric MHO, including insulin sensitivity, lipid profile, inflammation, and atheroprotective properties of HDL. METHODS AND RESULTS: This cross-sectional study included 21 children and adolescents with MHO, 15 with metabolically unhealthy

Metagenomic analysis of oral microbiota in Chinese children with obesity.

Childhood obesity represents an increasingly severe global public‑health concern, whose precise etiology remains incompletely elucidated and is likely multifactorial. In addition to genetic and lifestyle factors, mounting evidence indicates that the microbes in the digestive tract play a crucial role in the development and progression of obesity. Among them, the oral microbiota may contribute to obesity through mechanisms such as inducing systemic chronic inflammation and promoting gut microbiota dysbiosis. In the present study, saliva samples were collected from 9 obese children and 9 normal-

EXPRESS: Letter to the Editor Regarding "Much ado about eating: Intermittent fasting and post-stroke neuroprotection".

Vemuganti and colleagues highlight intermittent fasting (IF)'s neuroprotective potential post-stroke via autophagy and mitochondrial biogenesis. However, clinical translation faces hurdles in metabolically vulnerable patients. This letter critiques IF's bedside applicability, emphasizing post-stroke catabolic stress, dysphagia (~50% cases), sarcopenia risk, and cardiovascular concerns. Recent evidence links short eating windows to higher mortality, countering IF benefits. The obesity paradox suggests nutritional reserves aid survival. Strategies: protein-prioritized planning, dysphagia screeni

Perceptions of Dietary mHealth Apps Among Adolescents: Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents' high engagement with smartphones creates opportunities for mobile health (mHealth) apps targeting dietary behaviors. However, despite the availability of diverse dietary mHealth apps, user engagement remains low. Existing quantitative literature has identified barriers and facilitators to app effectiveness in youth (aged 10-19 years) but has not fully captured the nuanced perceptions of adolescents (aged 12-19 years), who represent a unique life stage. Synthesizing similarities and differences in adolescents' perceptions of what they value in dietary mHealth apps from

Predictive value of multimodal models combining CT body composition and clinical variables for short-term postoperative complications in colorectal cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition and sarcopenic obesity are prevalent in colorectal cancer (CRC) and linked to adverse surgical outcomes. Conventional screening often overlooks this occult malnutrition. Preoperative computed tomography (CT)-based body composition analysis (BCA) provides objective biomarkers for muscle depletion and fat distribution. This systematic review evaluates multimodal machine learning (ML) models integrating BCA and clinical variables to predict CRC postoperative complications and inform precision nutrition strategies. METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, Web o

[Medical, social, and economic conditionality of the population's microelement status in the context of the obesity epidemic].

INTRODUCTION: The obesity epidemic is a complex medical and social problem. A decrease in the purchasing power of the population provokes an increase in the consumption of cheap ultra-processed food. This leads to the paradox of «hidden hunger», when excessive caloric intake is combined with a pronounced deficiency of micronutrients. AIM: To assess the medical, social, and economic conditionality of the population's microelement status in the context of the growing obesity epidemic. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The empirical base consisted of federal statistics data (Rosstat), the results of regio

Lactobacillus gasseri LG-G12 Alleviates High-Fat Diet-induced Obesity through Gut Microbiota-Bile Acid Axis.

The role of probiotics in weight management remains controversial. In this study, we found that Lactobacillus gasseri LG-G12 exhibits gut colonization capacity and metabolic regulation potential in vitro. In vivo, LG-G12 alleviated high-fat diet-induced weight gain and visceral fat accumulation in mice. Fecal targeted metabolomics identified bile acid metabolism as a key pathway. Furthermore, LG-G12 might exhibit bile salt hydrolase and hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase activities, contributing to a bile acid profile characterized by low cholic acid and high ursodeoxycholic acid levels.
