Calorie labeling and food choices: a first look at the effects on low-income people in New York City.

We examined the influence of menu calorie labels on fast food choices in the wake of New York City's labeling mandate. Receipts and survey responses were collected from 1,156 adults at fast-food restaurants in low-income, minority New York communities. These were compared to a sample in Newark, New Jersey, a city that had not introduced menu labeling. We found that 27.7 percent who saw calorie labeling in New York said the information influenced their choices. However, we did not detect a change in calories purchased after the introduction of calorie labeling. We encourage more research on men

Fasting and postprandial adiponectin alterations anticipate NEFA and TNF-α changes in prepubertal obese children.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: It has been suggested that adipokine changes might precede changes in plasma non-esterified fatty acids and other obesity metabolic biomarkers. The aim of the present study was to evaluate changes in fasting and postprandial plasma levels of adiponectin, non-esterified fatty acids, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha in prepubertal obese children and age-matched normal-weight children. METHODS AND RESULTS: Fifty-four children of prepubertal age (34 obese, comprising 23 males and 11 females, and 20 normal-weight comprising 11 males and 9 females) were studied. A standard 438 k

Transcriptional and post-translational regulation of adiponectin.

Adiponectin is an adipose-tissue-derived hormone with anti-diabetic, anti-atherogenic and anti-inflammatory functions. Adiponectin circulates in the bloodstream in trimeric, hexameric and high-molecular-mass species, and different forms of adiponectin have been found to play distinct roles in the regulation of energy homoeostasis. The serum levels of adiponectin are negatively correlated with obesity and insulin resistance, yet the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. In the present review, we summarize recent progress made on the mechanisms regulating adiponectin gene transcription, multimer

CXCL5 drives obesity to diabetes, and further.

We have recently shown that the CXCL5 chemokine is secreted by adipose tissue in the obese state. We demonstrated that adipose tissue-derived CXCL5 mediates insulin resistance in muscle. We speculate in this paper that CXCL5 could also mediate other obesity, and diabetes-derived pathologies, such as cardiovascular disease, retinopathy, or inflammatory bowel disease. In this scenario CXCL5 targeted therapy would prevent not only the development of type II diabetes in obese subjects, but also several other obesity-related co morbidities. Finally we propose to analyze the CXCL5 gene to find parti

Reliability and relative validity of a child nutrition questionnaire to simultaneously assess dietary patterns associated with positive energy balance and food behaviours, attitudes, knowledge and environments associated with healthy eating.

BACKGROUND: Food behaviours, attitudes, environments and knowledge are relevant to professionals in childhood obesity prevention, as are dietary patterns which promote positive energy balance. There is a lack of valid and reliable tools to measure these parameters. The aim of this study was to determine the reliability and relative validity of a child nutrition questionnaire assessing all of these parameters, used in the evaluation of a community-based childhood obesity prevention project. METHODS: The development of the 14-item questionnaire was informed by the aims of the obesity prevention

Common variation in the fat mass and obesity-associated (FTO) gene confers risk of obesity and modulates BMI in the Chinese population.

OBJECTIVE: Genetic variants in the fat mass and obesity-associated (FTO) gene have been linked with obesity and type 2 diabetes in European populations. We aimed to test the role of FTO genetic variants in obesity and type 2 diabetes in the Chinese population. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We genotyped 19 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) spanning from the 3' end of the neighboring RPGRIP1L gene to the 5' flanking region of the FTO gene. We analyzed their associations with obesity (638 case and 1,610 control subjects), type 2 diabetes (759 case and 784 control subjects), and obesity-relat

Association of lactate with blood pressure before and after rapid weight loss.

BACKGROUND: The mechanism linking obesity with its downstream complications is poorly understood. Accumulating evidence suggests that insufficient oxidative capacity plays a central role in the development of insulin resistance and, perhaps, hypertension. METHODS: To investigate this hypothesis, we measured lactate, a marker of the gap between energy expenditure and oxidative capacity, in 40 obese subjects with the metabolic syndrome (Ob-MS), 40 obese subjects without the metabolic syndrome (Ob), and 20 lean controls (LCs). The 40 Ob-MS participants were then entered into a 12-20 week very lo

The angiotensin II type 2 receptor gene polymorphism and body mass index in healthy Japanese women.

BACKGROUND: Angiotensin II (AngII), through the AngII type 2 receptor (AT2-R), might exert some effect on adipocyte- and lipogenesis-related biology. The Adenine/Cytosine 3123 (A/C(3123)) polymorphism in the AT2-R gene is reportedly involved in some diseases, such as hypertension. METHODS: A total of 201 healthy Japanese women (mean age 43.2 years) were enrolled in the study to investigate the association among the AT2-R A/C(3123) polymorphism detected by polymerase chain reaction methods, body mass index (BMI) and other obesity-linked metabolic parameters (blood pressure, serum lipid/lipopro

Within-individual stability of obesity-related biomarkers among women.

OBJECTIVE: Novel biomarkers including proinflammatory cytokines and adipokines are being explored as potential mediators of cancer and other obesity-related conditions. Prospective studies linking biomarker levels with disease outcomes often measure biomarkers at a single time point and assume that the within-individual variation in levels is small compared with the interindividual variation. However, this assumption is seldom tested. METHODS: This study examined the within-individual stability over time of plasma adiponectin, resistin, leptin, plasma activator inhibitor type 1, hepatocyte gr

Prevalence and trends in obesity among aged and disabled U.S. Medicare beneficiaries, 1997-2002.

Given Medicare's recent national coverage decision on bariatric surgery, as well as potential coverage expansions for other obesity-related treatments, data on obesity in the Medicare population have great relevance. Using nationally representative data, we estimate that between 1997 and 2002, the prevalence of obesity in the Medicare population increased by 5.6 percentage points, or about 2.7 million beneficiaries. By 2002, 21.4 percent of aged beneficiaries and 39.3 percent of disabled beneficiaries were obese, compared with 16.4 percent and 32.5 percent, respectively, in 1997. Using 2002 da

Impact of bariatric surgery on type 2 diabetes.

The management and prevention of diabetes through lifestyle modifications and weight loss should be the mainstay of therapy in appropriate candidates. Although the results from the Diabetes Prevention Trial and the Finnish Prevention Study support this approach, over 95% of patients not participating in a prevention research study are unable to achieve and maintain any significant weight loss over time. Bariatric surgery for weight loss is an emerging option for more sustainable weight loss in the severely obese subject, especially when obesity is complicated by diabetes or other co-morbiditie

A re-examination of septal lesion-induced weight gain in female rats.

Previous studies that examined the effects of knife cuts ventral to the septal area, or the pattern of anterograde degeneration after other obesity-inducing lesions or cuts, have implicated the septal area in feeding behavior. However, lesion studies have been inconsistent. In the present study, large electrolytic lesions that destroyed all or nearly all of the septal area resulted in excessive weight gain in female rats (25 g/20 days compared to 1 g/20 days for controls). Lesions confined to the ventral septum produced equal weight gains, but rats with lesions confined to the dorsal septum di

Leptin levels among prepubertal children with Down syndrome compared with their siblings.

OBJECTIVES: To compare levels of leptin and other obesity-related hormones in prepubertal children with Down syndrome (DS), a population at high obesity risk, and those in unaffected siblings to better understand the pathophysiology of obesity in children with DS. STUDY DESIGN: This was a cross-sectional study of 35 children with DS and 33 control siblings, ages 4 to 10 years, with a fasting blood sample and anthropometric measurements to estimate body composition. Generalized estimating equations were used to account for the lack of independence between siblings. RESULTS: In addition to hav

Inequality in the built environment underlies key health disparities in physical activity and obesity.

CONTEXT: Environmental factors are suggested to play a major role in physical activity (PA) and other obesity-related behaviors, yet there is no national research on the relationship between disparity in access to recreational facilities and additional impact on PA and overweight patterns in US adolescents. OBJECTIVE: In a nationally representative cohort, we sought to assess the geographic and social distribution of PA facilities and how disparity in access might underlie population-level PA and overweight patterns. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Residential locations of US adolescents

The effects of obesity-related peptides on the vasculature.

Obesity and its related metabolic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, are associated with alterations in the circulating levels of various peptides. These include the adipocytokines (peptides released by adipocytes which circulate, such as leptin, adiponectin and resistin), and other peptides whose levels are altered in association with obesity (such as ghrelin, neuropeptide Y, interleukin-1 beta and tumour necrosis factor-alpha). While the primary action of these peptides is linked with the regulation and maintenance of energy balance and metabolism, many of them have also been shown to poss

Anthropometric measurements and their value in predicting complications following reduction mammaplasty and abdominoplasty.

Body mass index (BMI) is the traditional way of assessing patients for body contouring surgery and has been shown to have a predictive value for surgical complications. In recent years, there have been discussions about accuracy of BMI as an indicator of obesity, and other obesity indices have been developed. This study aimed to measure and compare different anthropometric variables and examine their association with surgical morbidity. Prospective measurements of height, weight, waist, and percentage body fat were obtained preoperatively in 60 patients undergoing body contouring surgery. Demo

The consequences of childhood overweight and obesity.

Researchers are only gradually becoming aware of the gravity of the risk that overweight and obesity pose for children's health. In this article Stephen Daniels documents the heavy toll that the obesity epidemic is taking on the health of the nation's children. He discusses both the immediate risks associated with childhood obesity and the longer-term risk that obese children and adolescents will become obese adults and suffer other health problems as a result. Daniels notes that many obesity-related health conditions once thought applicable only to adults are now being seen in children and wi

[Ghrelin and the gastro-hypothalamic axis].

Obesity is currently considered one of the most important diseases worldwide due to its high morbidity and mortality rates. The mechanisms involved in the control of satiation, body weight and energy expenditure has led to the discovery of new hormones that participate in the gastrichypothalamic axis in charge of regulating satiation and other obesity-related processes. Ghrelin a novel hormone secreted mainly by gastric tissue, has shed some light on this mechanism. It is a hormone that regulates satiation and body weight by centrally mediated mechanisms, involving neuropeptide Y and Agouti as

Fat tissue metabolism and adrenal steroid secretion.

Obesity has reached epidemic proportions in Western societies, contributing to metabolic diseases, hypertension, and vascular diseases. White adipose tissue has traditionally been regarded merely as lipid, and consequently, as energy storage. However, recent data revealed the importance of adipose tissue as a highly active endocrine organ and its involvement in the body's metabolism and homeostasis. Obesity is associated with several endocrine disorders, including adrenocortical malfunction. Because of the central role of adrenal function in the body's homeostasis, adrenal malfunction is impor
