Advertising and obesity: a behavioral perspective.

Concern over the levels of obesity observed in Western countries has grown as researchers forecast a rapid growth in the medical care that a progressively more obese population will require. As health workers deal with increased incidences of diabetes and other obesity-related disorders, policymakers have examined the factors contributing to this problem. In particular, advertising that promotes high fat and high sugar products to children has come under increasing scrutiny. Advertisers have rejected claims that advertising contributes to obesity by arguing that it cannot coerce people into pu

Association of esophageal adenocarcinoma with other subsequent primary cancers.

PURPOSE: Esophageal adenocarcinoma shares risk factors such as obesity and smoking with other common cancers. The association of esophageal adenocarcinoma with other primary cancers has not been systematically evaluated. The authors used the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End-Results database of the National Cancer Institute to explore the association of esophageal adenocarcinoma with other primary cancers. PATIENTS AND METHODS: All adult patients with esophageal cancers, both adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma diagnosed between 1973 and 2001, were identified from the Surveillance, Ep

Micro method for determination of nonesterified fatty acid in whole blood obtained by fingertip puncture.

Diagnostic tools for early identification of subjects at high risk for type 2 diabetes and other obesity-related disorders are important in prevention of these diseases. Nonesterified fatty acids (NEFAs) have been suggested to serve as a prediagnostic marker of diabetes and obesity-related disorders. In the current study, we developed a sensitive and reproducible micro method for quantification of NEFA in less than 10 microl whole blood. The method involves only two steps: (i) conversion of NEFA to fatty acid acyl-coenzyme A (acyl-CoA) esters using an acyl-CoA synthetase and (ii) quantificatio

Health insurance claims data as a means of assessing reduction in co-morbidities 6 months after bariatric surgery.

BACKGROUND: We measured the very short-term change in obesity-related co-morbidities following bariatric surgery. METHODS: Claims data were analyzed for 933 patients aged 18-62 who were covered by one of 11 New York State health plans and underwent bariatric surgery during calendar year 2002. Data covered 6 months before to 6 months after surgery. Logit regression and fixed effects logit regressions were estimated, to analyze change in the following co-morbidities after bariatric surgery: diabetes, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, asthma, sleep apnea, degenerative joint disease, gastroesophageal

Genetic effects on obesity assessed by bivariate genome scan: the Mexican-American coronary artery disease study.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the genetic determinants of obesity using univariate and bivariate models in a genome scan. RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: We evaluated the genetic and environmental effects and performed a genome-wide linkage analysis of obesity-related traits in 478 subjects from 105 Mexican-American nuclear families ascertained through a proband with documented coronary artery disease. The available obesity traits include BMI, body surface area (BSA), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and trunk fat mass as percentage of body weight. Heritability estimates and multipoint linkage analysis we

Importance of TNFalpha and neutral lipases in human adipose tissue lipolysis.

Catecholamines and natriuretic peptides stimulate human adipocyte lipolysis through an increase in cAMP and cGMP levels, resulting in phosphorylation and activation of hormone-sensitive lipase. A defect in hormone-sensitive lipase expression might contribute to the resistance to catecholamine-induced lipolysis observed in obesity. The respective roles and regulation of hormone-sensitive lipase and adipose triglyceride lipase in spontaneous and hormone-stimulated lipolysis remain to be determined. Tumor necrosis factor alpha stimulates triglyceride hydrolysis by multiple intracellular pathways

Plasma adiponectin levels and endometrial cancer risk in pre- and postmenopausal women.

BACKGROUND: Adiponectin, an adipocytokine secreted by adipose tissue, is decreased in obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and polycystic ovary syndrome, all of which are well-established risk factors for endometrial cancer. METHODS: We conducted a case-control study nested within the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition to examine the relation between prediagnostic plasma adiponectin levels and endometrial cancer risk. Among pre- and postmenopausal women who were not currently using exogenous hormones, 284 women developed incident endometrial cancer during an

INSIG-2 promoter polymorphism and obesity related phenotypes: association study in 1428 members of 248 families.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a major public health problem. Body mass index (BMI) is a highly heritable phenotype but robust associations of genetic polymorphisms to BMI or other obesity-related phenotypes have been difficult to establish. Recently a large genetic association study showed evidence for association of the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs7566605, which lies 10 Kb 5' to the first exon of the insulin-induced gene 2 (INSIG-2), with obesity in several cohorts. We tested this polymorphism for association with body mass related phenotypes in a large family study whose mean BMI was con

Vasodilation and visceral fat in elderly subjects: the Prospective Investigation of the Vasculature in Uppsala Seniors (PIVUS) study.

BACKGROUND: Although obesity has long been recognised as a cardiovascular risk factor, only in recent years has the role of visceral adipose tissue (VAT) been evaluated. In the Prospective Study of the Vasculature in Uppsala Seniors (PIVUS) study, we related VAT and other obesity indices to endothelium-dependent vasodilation in both capacitance and resistance arteries. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this population-based study, 1016 subjects aged 70 were evaluated by the invasive forearm technique with acetylcholine (EDV) and brachial artery ultrasound to assess flow-mediated vasodilation (FMD). The effect of weight loss on a stable biomarker of inflammation, C-reactive protein.

Inflammation is pivotal in all phases of atherosclerosis. Increasing body weight is positively associated with inflammation. Weight loss studies have shown that decreasing body weight significantly decreases C-reactive protein, the prototypic biomarker for inflammation. Reducing inflammation through weight loss could therefore be associated with reduced risk for cardiovascular disease and other obesity-associated chronic diseases.

Mice with MCH ablation resist diet-induced obesity through strain-specific mechanisms.

Genetics and environment contribute to the development of obesity, in both humans and rodents. However, the potential interaction between genes important in energy balance, strain background, and dietary environment has been only minimally explored. We investigated the effects of genetic ablation of melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH), a neuropeptide with a key role in energy balance, with chow and a high-fat diet (HFD) in two different mouse strains, one obesity-prone (C57BL/6) and the other obesity-resistant (129). Substantial differences were seen in wild-type (WT) animals of different stra

Does weight loss prognosis depend on genetic make-up?

The prevalence of obesity is rising throughout the world. Indeed, obesity has reached epidemic proportions in many developed and transition countries. Obesity is a complex disease with multifactorial origin, which in many cases appears as a polygenic condition affected by environmental factors. Treatment or prevention of obesity is necessary to reverse or avoid the onset of type 2 diabetes and other obesity-related diseases. Weight loss is a complex trait that depends on many environmental, behavioural and genetic influences. An effective programme for the management of overweight and obesity

Bariatric surgery: Asia-Pacific perspective.

BACKGROUND: There is a world-wide epidemic of overweight, obesity and morbid obesity. Bariatric surgery today, as the only effective therapy for morbid obesity, is expanding exponentially to meet the global epidemic of morbid obesity. Bariatric surgeons in the Asia-Pacific region had founded the Asia-Pacific Bariatric Surgery Group (APBSG) at Seoul, Korea on October 6, 2004. METHODS: E-mail requests for information were sent to the national bariatric surgery leaders. These requests were followed, if necessary, by second e-mail requests and communications seeking clarification. The summary dat

Role of interaction between variants in the PPARG and interleukin-6 genes on obesity related metabolic risk factors.

The combined effect of Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARG) Pro/Ala and interleukin-6 G174C gene variants, was evaluated in 429 Caucasian subjects in order to determine whether subjects carrying both variants were at different risk for obesity. In particular, the combined contribution of these two variants (both independent and interaction effects) to the total variation of obesity-related factors was estimated. All subjects were genotyped for codon 12 Pro/Ala locus variability and for the interleukin-6-174 C/G promoter polymorphism. Subjects with the Ala variant had signif

The prevalence of obesity and its relationship with lifestyle factors in Jamaica.

We surveyed the prevalence of obesity in the general population in Jamaica, and examined the relationship between it and lifestyle. The survey population consisted of 1,935 inhabitants in Jamaica, whose body weight, height, marital status, educational history, employment status and other obesity-associated lifestyle factors were surveyed. Six major findings emerged. The first finding is that the proportion of obesity in women was very high, and there was a big gender difference. Secondly, a lower prevalence towards obesity was associated with cohabitation of the subjects in both genders, and h
