Relation of abdominal height to cardiovascular risk factors in young adults: the Bogalusa heart study.

Obesity and fat patterns are important predictors of coronary heart disease risk. The relations of abdominal height (sagittal diameter) and various obesity measures to coronary heart disease risk factors were examined in a community-based sample of 409 Blacks and 1,011 Whites aged 20-38 years in Bogalusa, Louisiana (1995-1996). Obesity measures used included weight, waist circumference, waist:hip ratio, waist:height ratio, abdominal height, triceps and subscapular skinfold thicknesses, body mass index, and conicity index. Abdominal height was highly correlated with other obesity measures, espe

Obesity management in primary care: assessment of readiness to change among 284 family practice patients.

BACKGROUND: Most adults in primary care are overweight or obese; two thirds of patients with weight problems have other obesity-related conditions. The study objective was to explore the feasibility of a primary care obesity intervention based on the transtheoretical model (TM) of behavior change and principles of chronic disease (CD) care. METHODS: A prospective study of the initial version of the TM-CD intervention with obese family practice patients (n = 284) yielded cross-sectional data on baseline stage of change for six target behaviors: dietary fat, portion control, vegetable intake, f

Anthropometric obesity indices in relation to age and gender in Japanese adults.

The body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, waist to hip ratio, waist to height ratio and skinfolds (near-umbilical and iliac areas) in three age groups (35-44, 45-54 and 55-64 years) were compared in 3117 men and 997 women in Tokyo. In both genders, height was significantly shorter, while the waist to hip ratio and waist to height ratio were significantly higher, in the older groups. In the men, there were no significant differences in BMI and waist circumference among the three age groups, but the iliac skinfold was significantly thinner in each older group, and the paraumbilical skinfol

Quantitative trait loci for obesity and insulin resistance (Nob1, Nob2) and their interaction with the leptin receptor allele (LeprA720T/T1044I) in New Zealand obese mice.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: To locate genes responsible for obesity and insulin resistance, a backcross model of New Zealand obese (NZO) mice with the lean Swiss/Jackson Laboratory (SJL) strain was stablished. RESULTS: In female NZO x F1 backcross mice, two major quantitative trait loci for variables of obesity (body weight, body mass index, total body fat) and insulin resistance (hyperinsulinaemia) were identified on chromosomes 5 (Nob1) and 19 (Nob2) close to the markers D5Mit392 and D19Mit91. The aberrant alleles have presumably contributed by the NZO genome. Whereas Nob1 contributed mainly to higher

Melanocortin and leptin signaling systems: central regulation of catabolic energy balance.

The recent cloning of the ob gene (leptin) has revolutionized our understanding of obesity and the underlying factors that govern weight homeostasis. There is growing evidence that long term food intake regulation is controlled by the central nervous system by a number of peptide hormones in response to changes in leptin levels. Studies of these hormones, using both genetic and pharmacological approaches, have provided a foundation for decoding the molecular logic of the neuronal circuits which regulate food intake control and energy balance. A review of the current progress in the melanocorti

Identifying and developing empirically supported child and adolescent treatments.

Child and adolescent therapy outcome research findings attest to the efficacy of a variety of treatments. This article illustrates promising treatments for selected internalizing (anxiety and depression), externalizing (oppositional, and antisocial behavior), and other (obesity and autism) conditions, and for other aims (preparation for medical and dental procedures). Studies in these areas illustrate worthwhile characteristics that can help inform the search for empirically supported treatments. These characteristics include randomized controlled trials, well-described and replicable treatmen

Unraveling the central nervous system pathways underlying responses to leptin.

Here we summarize recent progress in the biology of leptin, concentrating on its central nervous system (CNS) actions. The product of the ob gene, leptin is a circulating hormone produced by white adipose tissue that has potent effects on feeding behavior, thermogenesis and neuroendocrine responses. Leptin regulates energy homeostasis, as its absence in rodents and humans causes severe obesity. We consider the physiological mechanisms underlying leptin action, along with several novel hypothalamic neuropeptides that affect food intake and body weight. The molecular causes of several other obes

Health care costs of obesity in New Zealand.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the costs of health care that are attributable to obesity in New Zealand. METHODS: The 1991 health care costs of non-insulin dependent diabetes, coronary heart disease, hypertension, gallstone disease, post-menopausal breast cancer and colon cancer were estimated and multiplied by the population attributable factor for obesity for each condition. The relative risk estimates were taken from the literature, the obesity prevalence from a 1990 New Zealand survey, and the costs and volumes of services were taken from a variety of sources and covered hospital (inpatient and o

Quantitative variation in obesity-related traits and insulin precursors linked to the OB gene region on human chromosome 7.

Despite the evidence that human obesity has strong genetic determinants, efforts at identifying specific genes that influence human obesity have largely been unsuccessful. Using the sibship data obtained from 32 low income Mexican American pedigrees ascertained on a type II diabetic proband and a multipoint variance-components method, we tested for linkage between various obesity-related traits plus associated metabolic traits and 15 markers on human chromosome 7. We found evidence for linkage between markers in the OB gene region and various traits, as follows: D7S514 and extremity skinfolds

The relationship of body mass index to reproductive factors in pre- and postmenopausal African-American women with and without breast cancer.

To date, there are virtually no existing data on the relationship between obesity, menopausal status, and breast cancer in African-Americans. Therefore, the present study was designed to test the following hypotheses in an African-American population: (1) there exists a positive association between BMI and breast cancer among postmenopausal women; (2) there exists an inverse association between BMI and breast cancer among premenopausal women; and (3) similar associations between BMI and reproductive factors exist for both pre- and postmenopausal breast cancer cases. The study population compri

Prevalence of obesity among adult Kuwaitis: a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: The association between obesity and different diseases is well documented, especially with non-insulin dependent diabetes, hypertension and heart disease. To prevent proliferation of these and other obesity-related diseases, and to plan adequate health education programmes for the control of obesity, base-line data are required on the prevalence of this condition. The present study is concerned with this need and its purpose is the determination of the prevalence of obesity among adult Kuwaitis. METHOD: A cross-section of 3435 Kuwaiti adults forms the study sample. Corpulence was a

[Measuring bone mineral content and soft tissue mass in living the cynomolgus monkey].

Bone mineral content and soft tissue (lean and fat) mass in living female cynomolgus monkeys were successfully measured with a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA; DPX-alpha, LUNARE, USA). Measurements were performed using a restraining bed made of forming polystyrol with 5cm thickness to support the animal in a supine position. Accuracy of measurements was checked by using a dummy consisted by various combinations of lean, lard and ribs. The results confirmed that this system is able to measure each constituent exactly. The percentage of fat in the soft tissue is seemed to be better index

Neomorphic agouti mutations in obese yellow mice.

Several dominant mutations of the mouse agouti coat colour gene have pleiotropic effects that include obesity and a yellow coat. The Ay allele is caused by a large deletion that affects the expression of several contiguous genes. We show that three other obesity-associated agouti mutations, Aiy, Asy and Avy, are due to different molecular alterations that result in ubiquitous expression of a chimaeric RNA that encodes a normal agouti protein. The Aiy and Avy alleles are caused by insertion of an intracisternal A particle element 1 kb or 100 kb, respectively, upstream of agouti coding sequences

The independent effects of obesity and body fat distribution on blood pressure in black adults: the Pitt County study.

The relationship of obesity measures to blood pressure and hypertension prevalence was assessed in a community probability sample of 25-50-year-old black adults (1101 women and 655 men) who were examined in 1988 in Pitt County, North Carolina. Among black women, both body mass index and waist-to-hip ratio had independent relationships with systolic and diastolic blood pressures and hypertension prevalence after controlling for the effects of age, socio-economic status, physical activity, alcohol, and the other obesity measure (P < 0.05). Body mass index also had independent relationships with

Special issues regarding obesity in minority populations.

Special attention must be given to obesity as it occurs in and affects ethnic minorities (that is, black Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian and Pacific Islander Americans, American Indians and Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians) in the United States. In most of these groups, the prevalence of obesity is substantially higher than in whites, especially among women. Poverty and lower educational attainment, which are associated with higher than average rates of female obesity (independent of ethnicity), affect proportionately more persons in these minority populations than in white population

Effects of gastrointestinal surgery on ingestive behavior in animals.

Surgical manipulations of the gastrointestinal system can have a major impact on the ingestive behavior of animals. Particularly well-documented are the feeding and drinking effects of JIB and vagotomy. These two surgical procedures are similar in that they reduce the food intake and body weight of obese animals more than that of lean animals, and of hypothalamic obese rats more than that of genetically obese rats. Intermediate effects are obtained with other obesity models. Given the multiple etiologies of human obesity, it is not surprising that gastrointestinal surgery has variable effects

Spontaneous obesity and weight loss: insulin binding and lipogenesis in the dormouse.

Obese dormice (Glis glis) become anorexic during the weight loss phase of the 2-mo (infradian) body weight cycle. We have shown previously that this phase is characterized by severe insulin resistance, manifested by impaired insulin-stimulated glucose utilization in isolated adipocytes. Contrary to other obesity models, the insulin resistance was not accompanied by hyperinsulinism. In the present study, impaired lipogenesis was associated with decreased maximal insulin-binding capacity (due to a reduction in receptor concentration) and a postreceptor defect, which were exacerbated rather than
