Association between weight-adjusted-waist index and urge urinary incontinence: a cross-sectional study from NHANES 2013 to 2018.

This study aimed to investigate the association between urge urinary incontinence (UUI) and weight-adjusted waist circumference index (WWI), a newly developed measure of obesity. Data from the 2013-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were included in the present cross-sectional study. Urge urinary incontinence was identified by self-reported urine leakage before reaching the toilet. Weighted multivariate logistic regression and generalized additive models were used to investigate the connection between WWI and UUI and its nonlinearity. The nonlinear relationship was

Could setmelanotide be the game-changer for acquired hypothalamic obesity?

Children with acquired hypothalamic obesity, e.g. following treatment for pediatric craniopharyngioma are at great risk for metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular health problems and premature mortality. Treatment for acquired hypothalamic obesity has thus far been disappointing. Several interventions were reported to be partially successful, including dextro-amphetamine and GLP-1R agonists, although results in acquired hypothalamic obesity are conflicting. Disruption of signaling through the melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R) pathway results in hyperphagia and severe early-onset hypothalamic obesity.

Fasting and meal-related zonulin serum levels in a large cohort of obese children and adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Zonulin recently emerged as a valuable biological marker to assess the integrity of the intestinal mucosal barrier. Nevertheless, data about zonulin in pediatric age are extremely scarce. Aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between serum zonulin levels, both fasting and postprandial, with body mass index (BMI) and biochemical markers of insulin resistance (IR), insulin sensitivity, b-cell function and cardio-metabolic risk in obese non-diabetic youths. METHODS: One hundred and four children and adolescents with obesity (BMI ≥ 2.0 SDS) were enrolled (mean age 11

Assessment of Different Indices as Predictors of Difficult Airway in Obese Patients.

Introduction Difficulties with tracheal intubation contribute to the morbidity and mortality associated with anesthesia. Suggested predictors for difficult airway include, history of obstructive sleep apnea, high Mallampati score, elderly, male, short neck, and high Wilson score. However, none of these has high diagnostic accuracy particularly in obese population. Parameters used to quantify obesity such as Body Mass Index(BMI), mid arm circumference, skin fold thickness, etc. have not been used as independent predictors of difficult airway. This study has been designed to evaluate the accurac

Ras/MAPK signaling mediates adipose tissue control of ovarian germline survival and ovulation in Drosophila melanogaster.

From insects to humans, oogenesis is tightly linked to nutritional input, yet little is known about how whole organism physiology matches dietary changes with oocyte development. Considering that diet-induced adipose tissue dysfunction is associated with an increased risk for fertility problems, and other obesity-associated pathophysiologies, it is critical to decipher the cellular and molecular mechanisms linking adipose nutrient sensing to remote control of the ovary and other tissues. Our previous studies in Drosophila melanogaster have shown that amino acid sensing, via the amino acid resp

A multifaceted and inclusive methodology for the detection of sarcopenia in patients undergoing bariatric surgery: an in-depth analysis of current evidence.

Bariatric surgery is widely recognized as the most effective intervention for obesity and offers benefits beyond weight loss. However, not all patients achieve satisfactory weight loss, balanced changes in body composition, and resolution of comorbidities. Therefore, thorough pre- and postoperative evaluations are important to predict success and minimize adverse effects. More comprehensive assessments require broadening the focus beyond body weight and fat measurements to consider quantitative and qualitative evaluations of muscles. Introducing the concept of sarcopenia is useful for assessin

Acupuncture for obesity and related diseases: Insight for regulating neural circuit.

Obesity is defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health. Obesity is associated with numerous pathological changes including insulin resistance, fatty liver, hyperlipidemias, and other obesity-related diseases. These comorbidities comprise a significant public health threat. Existing anti-obesity drugs have been limited by side effects that include depression, suicidal thoughts, cardiovascular complications and stroke. Acupuncture treatment has been shown to be effective for treating obesity and obesity-related conditions, while avoiding side effects. However, the me

Protein-truncating variants in BSN are associated with severe adult-onset obesity, type 2 diabetes and fatty liver disease.

Obesity is a major risk factor for many common diseases and has a substantial heritable component. To identify new genetic determinants, we performed exome-sequence analyses for adult body mass index (BMI) in up to 587,027 individuals. We identified rare loss-of-function variants in two genes (BSN and APBA1) with effects substantially larger than those of well-established obesity genes such as MC4R. In contrast to most other obesity-related genes, rare variants in BSN and APBA1 were not associated with normal variation in childhood adiposity. Furthermore, BSN protein-truncating variants (PTVs)

Association between predicted fat mass, predicted lean mass, predicted percent fat and type 2 diabetes mellitus in Japanese adults: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is known to have obesity as a risk factor. Body mass index cannot distinguish between lean mass and fat mass. We aimed to examine the association between predicted fat mass, predicted lean mass, predicted percent fat and risk of T2DM in Japanese adults. We also explored whether these three new parameters could predict T2DM better than other obesity markers. METHODS: This present study is a secondary data analysis. The study enrolled 20,944 Japanese individuals who participated in the NAGALA medical assessment program between 2004 and 2015. 15,453 pa

Association between weight-adjusted-waist index and depression: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Depression has become a multifaceted global health issue, with complex connections to obesity. Weight-adjusted-waist index (WWI) can effectively evaluate central obesity, but the relationship between WWI and depression has not been well studied. The study aims to investigate the potential correlation between these two health parameters. METHODS: According to the data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, this cross-sectional study used multiple regression analysis, subgroup analysis, and smooth curve fitting to explore the relationship between WWI and depression.

The past, present, and future of behavioral obesity treatment.

Over the last century, hundreds of evaluations have been conducted to examine weight-management interventions related to diet, physical activity, and behavior therapy. These investigations have contributed to a growing body of knowledge that has consistently advanced the field of obesity treatment, while also revealing some persistent challenges. This narrative review summarizes key findings from randomized controlled trials conducted in adults that have combined diet, physical activity, and behavior therapy, an approach variously referred to as behavioral treatment, comprehensive lifestyle mo

Carry that weight: Parental separation and children's Body Mass Index from childhood to young adulthood.

Research has shown that parental separation is associated with worse physical health and unhealthy weight gains during childhood. However, limited empirical attention has been given to the evolution of child health before, upon and following parental union dissolution. Drawing on data from the Child Development Supplement and the Transition to Adulthood Supplement of the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (1997-2017), I investigate whether parental union dissolution during childhood is associated with children's Body Mass Index (BMI) and the risk of developing overweight/obesity in the short and l

Chinese visceral adiposity index and its relation to abnormal left ventricular remodeling assessed by relative wall thickness and left ventricular mass index.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The Chinese visceral adipose index (CVAI) is more significantly associated with cardiometabolic risk factors than other obesity indices. This study investigated the relationship between CVAI and left ventricular (LV) remodeling. METHODS AND RESULTS: This study included 75,132 Koreans who underwent echocardiography during a health checkup. They were grouped according to quartile levels of the CVAI, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and visceral adiposity index (VAI). LV remodeling was defined as the presence of abnormal relative wall thickness (ARWT) and lef

Urinary enterolignans and enterolignan-predicting microbial species are favourably associated with liver fat and other obesity markers.

Aims: Plant-derived lignans may protect against obesity, while their bioactivity needs gut microbial conversion to enterolignans. We used repeated measures to identify enterolignan-predicting microbial species and investigate whether enterolignans and enterolignan-predicting microbial species are associated with obesity. Methods: Urinary enterolignans, fecal microbiota, body weight, height, and circumferences of the waist (WC) and hips (HC) were repeatedly measured at the baseline and after 1 year in 305 community-dwelling adults in Huoshan, China. Body composition and liver fat [indicated by

Regional fat distribution and hepatic fibrosis and steatosis severity in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and type 2 diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic findings suggest that measures of body fat distribution predict health outcomes independent of the overall body fat assessed by body mass index (BMI). This study aimed to evaluate the associations of overall and regional body fat with the severity of hepatic steatosis and fibrosis in type 2 diabetic patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. METHODS: Bioelectric impedance analysis and two newly developed anthropometric indices, namely, A Body Shape Index (ABSI) and Body Roundness Index (BRI), were used to estimate the body fat.
