Practical guideline on obesity care in patients with gastrointestinal and liver diseases - Joint ESPEN/UEG guideline.

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic gastrointestinal disease such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), celiac disease, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), pancreatitis, and chronic liver disease (CLD) often suffer from obesity because of coincidence (IBD, IBS, celiac disease) or related pathophysiology (GERD, pancreatitis and CLD). It is unclear if such patients need a particular diagnostic and treatment that differs from the needs of lean gastrointestinal patients. The present guideline addresses this question according to current knowledge and evidence. OBJ

Associations between sleep characteristics, chronotype and body mass index among Chinese college freshmen.

Research indicates that sleep problem is a behavioral risk factor of obesity. However, few research have applied a multi-dimensional approach to investigate the relationship between sleep health and adiposity. Therefore, the current study aimed to examine the associations of sleep characteristics (duration, quality) and chronotype with overweight/obesity as measured by body mass index. Data were obtained from 2014 college students from the Dali University in the Yunnan province of China in the year 2021. Sleep characteristics and chronotype were measured using self-reported questionnaires. The

Apple-shaped obesity: A risky soil for cytokine-accelerated severity in COVID-19.

Obesity has been recognized as one of the most significant risk factors for the deterioration and mortality associated with COVID-19, but the significance of obesity itself differs among ethnicity. Multifactored analysis of our single institute-based retrospective cohort revealed that high visceral adipose tissue (VAT) burden, but not other obesity-associated markers, was related to accelerated inflammatory responses and the mortality of Japanese COVID-19 patients. To elucidate the mechanisms how VAT-dominant obesity induces severe inflammation after severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavir

Outcomes of single anastomosis duodeno ileal bypass and single anastomosis stomach ileal bypass for type II diabetes: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Bariatric surgery has demonstrated long-term effectiveness in inducing weight loss and improving metabolic parameters for obesity. Single anastomosis duodeno-ileal (SADI) bypass and single anastomosis sleeve-ileal (SASI) bypass have both emerged as new promising bariatric procedures. In this paper, we review the existing literature and compare the outcomes of SADI and SASI bypass procedures in regard to weight loss, complication rate, and improvement of type II diabetes (T2DM). This has not yet been done in the preexisting literature. AREAS COVERED: We conducted a systematic lit

Adipocyte-Derived Adipokines and Other Obesity-Associated Molecules in Feline Mammary Cancer.

Obesity has been identified as a serious health concern in domestic cats. Feline mammary cancer (FMC) is also a concern, as it is highly prevalent and aggressive. Considering the identified connection between obesity and breast cancer, it is worthwhile to investigate the potential obesity-cancer relationship in FMC. This review investigated the association between adipokines and other obesity-associated molecules and FMC, with the aim of identifying gaps in the current literature for future research. Based on the reports to date, it was found that tissue concentrations of leptin, serum concent

Decoding the obesity-cancer connection: lessons from preclinical models of pancreatic adenocarcinoma.

Obesity is a metabolic state of energy excess and a risk factor for over a dozen cancer types. Because of the rising worldwide prevalence of obesity, decoding the mechanisms by which obesity promotes tumor initiation and early progression is a societal imperative and could broadly impact human health. Here, we review results from preclinical models that link obesity to cancer, using pancreatic adenocarcinoma as a paradigmatic example. We discuss how obesity drives cancer development by reprogramming the pretumor or tumor cell and its micro- and macro-environments. Specifically, we describe evi

Association between weight-adjusted-waist index and chronic kidney disease: a cross-sectional study.

AIMS: We aimed to investigate the potential association between weight-adjusted-waist index (WWI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). DESIGN AND METHODS: This research examined data collected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning from 1999 to 2020. CKD was defined as the low estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) or the existence of albuminuria (urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) ≥ 30mg/g). Low-eGFR was described as eGFR < 60 mL/min/1.73m2. The associations between WWI with CKD, albuminuria, and low-eGFR were examined using generalized additive

Abdominal Obesity May Play a Significant Role in inflammation Exacerbation in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Patients.

OBJECTIVE: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine disorder that seems to be pro-inflammatory at many levels, abdominal obesity (AO) is a prevalent pro-inflammatory phenotype in PCOS patients, and it seems to contribute to the initiation or worsening of inflammation in PCOS patients. In this study, we investigated the role of the AO phenotype in the occurrence of other obesity indicators (neck and arm) and augmentation of inflammation in the follicular fluid (FF) of PCOS patients. METHODS: 40 patients under the age of 35 were divided into four groups: PCOS with AO, PCOS without AO, n

Advances in obesity pharmacotherapy; learning from metabolic surgery and beyond.

Currently, metabolic surgery (MS) constitutes the most effective means for durable weight loss of clinically meaningful magnitude, type 2 diabetes remission and resolution of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, as well as other obesity-related comorbidities. Accumulating evidence on the mechanisms through which MS exerts its actions has highlighted the altered secretion of hormonally active peptides of intestinal origin with biological actions crucial to energy metabolism as key drivers of MS clinical effects. The initial success of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists regarding weight
