In critical disability studies and crip theory, a key intervention has been to challenge Cartesian dualism by using terms such as bodyminds, body-minds, mind/bodies, and other hybrids. While the concept of "bodyminds" integrates physical and cognitive experiences and challenges dualistic thinking, it has been criticized by scholars for prioritizing Eurocentric notions of the mind and subjectivity over other understandings of bodily normality and difference. Drawing on ten years of ethnographic research in Tanzania, this article argues that the concept of "bodyminds" remains rooted in a Eurocen

Forensic DNA phenotyping (FDP) has emerged as an essential tool in criminal investigations, enabling the prediction of physical traits based on genetic information. This review explores the genetic factors influencing skin pigmentation, particularly within Asian populations, with a focus on Thailand. Key genes such as Oculocutaneous Albinism II (OCA2), Dopachrome Tautomerase (DCT), KIT Ligand (KITLG), and Solute Carrier Family 24 Member 2 (SLC24A2) are examined for their roles in melanin production and variations that lead to different skin tones. The OCA2 gene is highlighted for its role in t

A 29-year-old Moroccan with oculocutaneous albinism presented with a history of exertional dyspnea, recurrent epistaxis, and bacterial infections, raising suspicion of Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome (HPS). Further evaluation revealed neutropenia, impaired platelet function, pulmonary fibrosis, and mild pulmonary hypertension. An ECG identified ventricular pre-excitation with a postero-septal right accessory pathway, consistent with Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome. Genetic testing confirmed a homozygous mutation in the AP3B1 gene and a diagnosis of Type 2 HPS (HPS-2) was made. HPS-2 is an extre

Trichilemmal carcinoma (TC) is a rare adnexal neoplasm derived from the outer sheath of the hair follicle. Despite its aggressive histological features, TC typically exhibits low-grade clinical behavior, with local recurrences being more common than metastasis. This case report describes a 47-year-old Hispanic female with oculocutaneous albinism and a history of numerous nonmelanoma skin cancers (NMSCs) who presented with an erythematous papule on her forearm. Histopathology revealed TC characterized by basaloid keratinocytes with clear cytoplasm and peripheral palisading and a high proliferat

Oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) is a condition inherited in an autosomal recessive manner, leading to reduced pigmentation in the skin, hair, and eyes. Oculocutaneous albinism type 2 (OCA2) is one of the most common forms of OCA, caused by OCA2 mutations. This case report presents a newborn with suspected OCA. Postnatal examination revealed white skin, golden-colored hair, and reduced visibility of the retinal pigmented epithelium on fundus photography. Genomic DNA was extracted from the peripheral blood of the patient and her parents. Whole Exome Sequencing (WES) was conducted using chip captur

BACKGROUND: Albinism in plants causes slow growth, dwarfing and even death. Most albinism is mainly focused on leaf albinism. Studies of seed albinism are still lacking and scarcely studied in higher plants with asexual reproduction.
RESULTS: In this study, two seed albinism mutations (AM1 and AM2) in lotus were unable to survive in normal condition, exhibiting a decline in carotenoid and chlorophyll contents compared with wild type (WT). Metabolome analyses illustrated a total of 51 differentially changed metabolites (DCMs) in embryo of AM1 (AM1-E), AM2 (AM2-E) and WT (WT-E), along with 94 D

Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome (HPS) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by clinical features including oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) and bleeding diathesis due to platelet storage pool deficiency. In this article, we report a 12-year-old boy with recurrent epistaxis who was referred to the Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization (IBTO) reference coagulation laboratory for platelet function analysis. Based on the laboratory diagnostic tests in this study and the patient's clinical presentation, the probability of HPS type 2 is more likely.

Oculocutaneous albinism is a rare genetic disorder characterized by the absence or reduction of melanin pigment in the skin, hair, and eyes, leading to various visual and dermatological challenges. To shed light on the molecular pathology of OCA in consanguineous Pakistani families, we conducted whole-exome sequencing on affected individuals from two families. We identified disease-causing homozygous mutations in the TYR (NM_000372) and OCA2 (NM_000275.3) genes that segregated within their respective pedigrees. In family AL01, we identified a novel mutation in the TYR gene, resulting in a miss

Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome (HPS) type 1 (HPS-1) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by oculocutaneous albinism, platelet dysfunction, and pulmonary fibrosis (HPS-PF), the leading cause of mortality in these patients. HPS-PF manifests earlier than idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, typically between 30 and 40 years of age. The etiology and drivers of HPS-PF progression remain poorly understood, and no FDA-approved therapies exist. Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) and neutrophil-derived mediators have emerged as key players in fibrosis, promoting lung injury, inflammation, and fibro

To elucidate the genetic etiology of hearing impairment (HI) in South Africa, 45 nonsyndromic HI (NSHI) and syndromic HI (SHI) families with ≥ 2 affected members were analyzed. Exome and sanger sequencing were used to identify causal genes. For NSHI, 14 of 24 families segregated variants in NSHI genes, that is, CDH23, GJB2, MITF, MYO7A, MYO15A, PCDH15, POU3F4, REST, SLC26A4, TMPRSS3, and WFS1. For the 21 SHI families, 14 have Waardenburg syndrome, two Branchio-Oto-Renal syndromes, and one each with Bartter, Chudley-McCullough, Deafness-Albinism, MYH9-related disorder, and Pendred syndromes. Carotenoids are essential pigments in plants, playing critical roles in photosynthesis, photoprotection, and stress tolerance, particularly under environmental conditions such as high light intensity and drought. To enhance β-carotene content in durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.), a TILLING approach was used to generate null mutants for the lycopene ε-cyclase (LCYE) and β-hydroxylases 1 (HYD1) genes, which are key players in carotenoid biosynthesis. Homozygous mutants for both genes were obtained by crossing single homeoallelic mutant lines, resulting in three distinct mutant lines (LxH_1, LxH

Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome (HPS) is a rare inherited disorder caused by defects in lysosome-related organelles (LROs) in various tissues, including platelets, melanocytes, and endothelial cells. Key features of HPS include oculocutaneous albinism, bleeding tendency, and, in some cases, pulmonary fibrosis, granulomatous colitis, and immunodeficiency. The condition is linked to mutations in 11 genes involved in the formation of LROs. Currently, treatment options for HPS are limited and often ineffective. Though cell and gene therapies have been explored for melanosomes and epithelial cells, there

The detection of chlorophyll is a convenient method for assessing gene editing efficiency when generating mutations in the phytoene desaturase (PDS) gene, which is related to chlorophyll biosynthesis. Various instruments and protocols are available for measuring chlorophyll; however, a minimum leaf area is required for precise quantifications. In vitro plant regeneration often requires several months to produce enough leaf tissue for chlorophyll content analysis. In this study, we optimized an existing chlorophyll quantification method by using a minimal amount of in vitro leaf tissue (<2.0 mg

Mowat-Wilson syndrome (MOWS) is a congenital disease characterized by intellectual disability, delayed motor development, characteristic facial features, epilepsy, and a wide spectrum of neurocristopathies. MOWS is caused by de novo heterozygous loss-of-function mutations or deletions in the zinc finger E-box-binding homeobox2 (ZEB2) gene, which is a multifunctional regulator of neuronal development and cancer progression/metastasis through epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition. We recognized that patients with MOWS have brown to red hair. In the present study, we report that hair from patients
