Will my child see me again? Addressing children's vision impairment through surgeries, optical correction, and low vision services in Northern Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Blindness and low vision in children remain significant public health concerns, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. These conditions are often underdiagnosed and undertreated due to limited access to specialized services, spectacles, and assistive devices, posing critical challenges to health equity. The Childhood Blindness and Low Vision Programme (CBLVP) in Northern Malawi, Africa aimed to address these gaps through capacity building, advocacy, improved access to regular eye health and low vision assessments, and the provision of spectacles and low vision devices. "In me you see the Almighty's wondrous Power": Amelia Newsham, Race, and Black Women's Intellectual History in Georgian Britain.

Born enslaved in Jamaica, Amelia Newsham had albinism, a condition not fully understood in the eighteenth century that contributed to nascent understandings and debates regarding racial difference. Known as the "white negro," Amelia was examined and exhibited across England by "men of the Enlightenment" who sought scientific explanations for her white skin. Their ideas were published or traceable in their correspondence. But what of Amelia? This paper places a brief archive from 1791 within the context of the ongoing "race debates" of the eighteenth century to consider how she understood her o

Mild Oculocutaneous Albinism Type 1B With Subtle Cutaneous Findings: A Dermatology-Oriented Case Report.

Oculocutaneous albinism type 1B (OCA1B) may present with subtle dermatologic manifestations and be initially suspected through ophthalmologic abnormalities. We report a 16-year-old female with normal psychomotor development who presented with progressive decreased visual acuity beginning in childhood. Ophthalmologic evaluation demonstrated reduced best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and fundoscopic findings, including pale optic discs and increased visibility of choroidal vessels. Suspicion of albinism increased after optical coherence tomography (OCT) revealed the absence of foveal depression

Curriculum Resources for Integrating Respectful Maternity Care Into Health Professions Education: A Rapid Scoping Review.

INTRODUCTION: Respectful maternity care (RMC) ensures that every childbearing woman is treated with dignity, safety, and respect. Health care professionals play a critical role in RMC but can also contribute to disrespectful and abusive practices, inflicting lasting trauma. Educating pre-service health care learners is one promising strategy for change. As part of our larger Mothering and Albinism research project, we sought timely evidence to develop educational resources supporting RMC for people impacted by albinism. METHODS: Our international team conducted a rapid scoping review to answe

A Comparative Analysis of the Critical Resilience and Gender Equity of Mothers Impacted by Albinism: Promising Practices From Tanzania and South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Women bear the brunt of human rights violations faced by persons with albinism, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. In addition to insufficient access to skin and eye care, increased rates of skin cancer, stigma and discrimination, and threats of mutilation and murder as they are reportedly trafficked for economic gain, they face heightened gender-based violence linked to misbeliefs about albinism. This study explored through a human rights lens the resilience of mothers affected by albinism, at the intersection of gender, colorism, and religion in Tanzania and South Africa. METHODS

Co-option of Lysosomal Machinery for Sponge Biosilicification.

Biomineralization evolved repeatedly across animals, resulting in novel strategies for buoyancy, locomotion, and defense. Sponges are the only metazoans that build a silica-based skeleton and the mechanisms underlying their biosilicification are relatively understudied compared to other major silicifiers. Here, we show that in freshwater sponges, cells specialized for biosilicification, termed sclerocytes, highly express lysosomal-associated genes, including the V-H+-ATPase (VHA) proton pump, oculocutaneous albinism type 2 (OCA2) anion channels, cathepsins, silicateins, TMEM55A/B, TMEM192, TME

The human fovea.

While the fovea occupies only about 0.1% of the total retinal surface area, it is arguably the most important region of the human retina. The human fovea is characterized by unique anatomic specializations relative to the rest of the retina, which include an absence of inner retinal layers and the accompanying vasculature, an increased density of cone photoreceptors, a near-absence of rod photoreceptors, and a unique "private-line" midget ganglion cell circuitry. These anatomic specializations are responsible for our high-acuity vision. Unfortunately, as a result, even minor disruptions to fov

A human rights-based analysis of the experiences and challenges faced by children with albinism and their mothers: Insights from the African film 'Can You See Us?'.

BACKGROUND: This study utilises the cinematic work 'Can You See Us' as a prism to elucidate contemporary discourse surrounding the intricate tribulations confronted by children with albinism and their mothers. Despite increasing academic research on the connection between albinism and motherhood experiences, meaningful critical discussions on this topic remain inadequately addressed within both scholarly frameworks and African policy and human rights paradigms. OBJECTIVES: Utilising a human rights-based approach, the inquiry elucidates how systemic sufferings besiege a child with albinism and

Gene therapy induces pigmentation in induced pluripotent stem cell-derived retinal pigment epithelium of OCA1A patients and albino rat eye.

Oculocutaneous albinism type 1A (OCA1A), the most severe and prevalent form of albinism, is caused by recessive mutations in the TYROSINASE gene. We provide proof-of-principle of an effective gene therapy-based strategy for future human application in OCA1A patients. Here, we show that an AAV-based TYROSINASE gene delivery under the control of human BESTROPHIN promoter VMD2 can successfully induce pigmentation in human retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) monolayer tissue, derived from OCA1A patients, via induced pluripotent stem cells. Pigmentation was induced without significantly compromising t

Whole-genome sequencing uncovers diverse genetic causes and phenotypic signatures in infantile nystagmus and albinism.

We combined deep phenotype data and whole-genome sequencing results from the UK 100,000 Genomes Project (100KGP) to characterize the genetic spectrum of infantile nystagmus and albinism, and to explore genotype-phenotype correlations in this cohort. Participants were enrolled in the study based on the clinical codes for albinism or infantile nystagmus. Whole genome sequencing data was retrieved and variants in known nystagmus/albinism genes (PanelApp R39 panel) were analysed alongside genome-wide findings. We ascertained 473 affected individuals (388 families). Positive genetic findings were o

A comparative analysis of monascin and ankaflavin biosynthesis in Monascus purpureus and its albino variant.

Red mold rice (RMR), a functional food ingredient, is produced via Monascus spp. fermentation, a process that yields a diverse range of bioactive compounds, most notably the Monascus yellow pigments monascin and ankaflavin. This study provides the first report of spontaneous albinism in Monascus species. Although the specific mechanisms and conditions triggering the transition to albino strains remain to be definitively elucidated, our analyses reveal that the albino strain of Monascus purpureus exhibits a faster growth rate and significantly lower yellow pigment production compared to the wil

A Dosage-Dependent Dominant-Negative Mechanism of SLC45A2(W74R) in Autosomal Dominant Oculocutaneous Albinism Revealed by Zebrafish Modeling.

PURPOSE: To investigate the clinical characteristics of autosomal dominant oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) and functionally validate the heterozygous SLC45A2(W74R) variant using a zebrafish model. METHODS: Three members of a Korean family with OCA underwent comprehensive clinical examinations. Targeted panel and genome sequencing were performed on the proband, and Sanger sequencing was performed on all affected family members. To assess the pathogenicity of the genetic variant, a slc45a2 knockout (KO) zebrafish model was generated using CRISPR technology. RESULTS: All three affected patients e

Insights from Computational Dynamic Active Site Mapping into Substrate Recognition and Mutation-Induced Dysfunction in Human Tyrosinase.

The ability of enzymes to recognize and process structurally diverse substrates is fundamental to metabolic flexibility and biological regulation. In melanin biosynthesis, human tyrosinase (Tyr) catalyzes the oxidation of several chemically distinct intermediates, including L-tyrosine, L-DOPA, DHICA, and DHI. Although its catalytic chemistry is well established, the structural basis of substrate selectivity and how it is altered by disease-associated mutations remains unclear. Using molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations, we mapped the Tyr active site and identified 23 evolutiona

Pigment loss and pseudo-albinism in Birdshot chorioretinitis.

OBJECTIVES: To describe a rare phenotype of birdshot chorioretinitis (BSCR) characterised by diffuse retinal depigmentation and to evaluate its relationship with disease chronicity and visual outcomes. METHODS: This observational study included patients from the CO-BIRD cohort with ultra-widefield fundus imaging. Retinal depigmentation was graded using the albinism scale by Kruijt et al. (grades 0-3). Eyes with a grade ≥ 2 in at least one image were included. Disease activity and severity were assessed using best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), vision-related quality of life (VFQ-25), visual
