Pulmonary actinomycosis and pulmonary nocardiosis are rare chronic respiratory infections that may closely resemble lung cancer due to their overlapping clinical, radiological, and bronchoscopic characteristics. This hybrid case series and narrative review aims to elucidate the presenting patterns, diagnostic pathways, management strategies, and practical implications of these infections in the differential diagnosis of lung cancer. We analyzed four consecutive cases managed at the Sotiria Thoracic Diseases General Hospital in Athens from 2021 to 2025, supplemented by eight additional cases id

Pulmonary actinomycosis is a chronic respiratory infection caused by Actinomyces. Actinomyces graevenitzii is a rare species of Actinomyces with rare cases of infections. Herein, we report a case of endobronchial actinomycosis due to foreign-body aspiration in which A . graevenitzii was identified. The patient was a 48-year-old woman with a prior history of childhood asthma. She presented with a three-month history of hemoptysis, green sputum, and cough. Plain computed tomography of the chest revealed an elongated foreign body at the left inferior lobar bronchus, with infiltrative opacities ex

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary actinomycosis is a rare chronic infection that frequently mimics lung malignancy, often leading to delayed diagnosis due to its non-specific clinical and radiological presentation. Given the diagnostic challenges associated with this condition, the aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical presentation, diagnostic pathways, treatment strategies, and outcomes of patients diagnosed with pulmonary actinomycosis in a single center.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients diagnosed with pulmonary actinomycosis at our institution between January 2014 and December 20

Pulmonary actinomycosis is a rare cause of granulomatous and suppurative lung disease that often presents with non-specific symptoms leading to misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis. Complications include sepsis, infective endocarditis and rarely empyema necessitans. In our report, we present a case of a gentleman in his late 50s, with poor oral hygiene and a number of other risk factors who presented with severe weight loss and an expanding chest wall mass. Following a thorough physical examination and biochemical, radiological and microbiological investigations, the patient was diagnosed with an

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary actinomycosis is a rare, chronic, suppurative infection caused by anaerobic, Gram-positive Actinomycesspecies, characterized by a notoriously high misdiagnosis rate. Due to non-specific clinical and imaging presentations, it is frequently misdiagnosed. This study aims to establish the first CT-based classification system to improve diagnostic accuracy and guide individualized treatment.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients with pathologically or molecularly confirmed pulmonary actinomycosis between February 2003 and April 2024. Their chest CT featu

BACKGROUND: This is the first review of literature and synthesis of data on community onset methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CO-MRSA) infections in Australia. Incidence of CO-MRSA varies considerably in Australia, depending on geographic and demographic factors.
METHODS: Data for the rates of MRSA infections were collected from articles identified using PubMed, Scopus, the grey literature and data from State and Federal Government Surveillance Systems. We synthesized data and developed a framework for how data was selected, collated, linked, organized and interpreted.
RESULTS: Th

CASE SUMMARY: A 3-year-old, female spayed domestic shorthair with 7 months of pyogranulomatous panniculitis was referred after culture isolation of Actinomyces species. Despite initial improvement, clinical resolution was not achieved with the dosage and duration of clindamycin therapy previously reported as adequate for actinomycosis. Surgical resection with antibiotic impregnated calcium sulfate carrier material for local delivery of ampicillin-sulbactam was pursued. The patient developed severe hypercalcemia (21.6 mg/dl, reference interval 7.8-11.3) after surgery, resolving after 7 days of

Atomoxetine (Strattera(R)) is a selective norepinephrine (noradrenaline) reuptake inhibitor that is not classified as a stimulant, and is indicated for use in patients with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Atomoxetine is effective and generally well tolerated. It is significantly more effective than placebo and standard current therapy and does not differ significantly from or is noninferior to immediate-release methylphenidate; however, it is significantly less effective than the extended-release methylphenidate formulation OROS(R) methylphenidate (hereafter referred to as osm

Whipple's disease (WD) is a rare infectious disease caused by Tropheryma whipplei , which primarily affects the gastrointestinal tract but may also involve the joints, central nervous system, and skin. Although cutaneous manifestations are often overlooked, they can provide valuable diagnostic clues. We report the case of a 54-year-old male with long-standing seronegative migratory polyarthritis refractory to conventional treatment, who subsequently developed multiple subcutaneous inflammatory nodules and systemic symptoms. Histopathological examination of these lesions revealed a non-vasculit

UNLABELLED: Pseudomonas aeruginosa AG1 (PaeAG1) is a Costa Rican strain that was isolated in 2010 in a major Hospital. This strain has resistance to multiple antibiotics such as β-lactams (including carbapenems), aminoglycosides, and fluoroquinolones. PaeAG1 is considered critical (Priority 1) due to its resistance to carbapenems, and it was the first report of a P. aeruginosa isolate carrying both VIM-2 and IMP-18 genes encoding for metallo-β-lactamases (MBL) enzymes (both with carbapenemase activity). Owing to these traits, we have studied this model for 10 years using diverse approaches inc

BACKGROUND: Schaalia turicensis (previously classified as Actinomyces turicensis) may lead to actinomycosis, typically presented as a chronic, granulomatous infection marked by suppuration and sinus tract formation, with a propensity for recurrence. This report details a rare case of chronic post-traumatic osteomyelitis attributable to S. turicensis.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 57-year-old woman was presented with a 4-year history of recurrent redness, swelling, and ulceration of the left lower leg after surgical intervention. Debridement of the lesion was performed by orthopedists. Metagenomic next

Actinomyces (A.) hyovaginalis is a Gram-positive, rod-shaped, polymorphic bacterium. In domestic pigs, the infection is typically associated with pyogranulomatous pneumonia. In wild boars, this infection was never associated with such lesion. We report the gross, histopathological, and bacteriological findings in a case of pyogranulomatous pneumonia caused by A. hyovaginalis infection in a free-ranging wild boar. Fragments of the lungs, lymph nodes, and heart from a wild boar were sent by boar hunters for histopathological analysis with a presumptive tuberculosis diagnosis. Grossly, in the lun

The Journal of Genetics, started by William Bateson in 1910, played a distinguished role in the early years of genetics. However, it stopped publishing in 1978. The Indian Academy of Sciences revived it in 1985, and has published it regularly since then. To commemorate this landmark, I highlight one of the 17 articles published that year. 'The isolation and genetic analysis of a Caenorhabditis elegans… X-chromosome balancer' by András Fodor and Péter Deak, of the Institute of Genetics, Biological Research Centre, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Szeged, Hungary. This article is an abridged version of the AWMF mould guideline "Medical clinical diagnostics of indoor mould exposure" presented in April 2016 by the German Society of Hygiene, Environmental Medicine and Preventive Medicine (Gesellschaft für Hygiene, Umweltmedizin und Präventivmedizin, GHUP), in collaboration with the above-mentioned scientific medical societies, German and Austrian societies, medical associations and experts. Indoor mould growth is a potential health risk, even if a quantitative and/or causal relationship between the occurrence of individual mould species and health problems

BACKGROUND: Use of the ergot-derived dopamine receptor agonists (cabergoline and pergolide) is associated with an increased risk of cardiac valvulopathy. Pergolide was withdrawn from the US market in 2007 because of the risk of valvular heart disease, while the European Medicines Agency (EMA) required a reduction in the maximum daily dosage of cabergoline and pergolide from 6 mg/day to 3 mg/day in 2008. In Japan, the package inserts of both drugs were revised in April 2007 to request that physicians conduct periodic ultrasonic cardiography (UCG) examinations for patients taking cabergoline or

Hepatic actinomycosis is an uncommon diagnostic mimic of pyogenic or amoebic liver abscess. A 34-year-old healthy man presented with fever, vomiting, and right upper quadrant pain after recent travel. Computed tomography showed a 7 x 7 x 5 cm subcapsular segment VIII hepatic abscess. Empirical piperacillin-tazobactam and metronidazole were started, followed by ultrasound-guided drainage with catheter placement. Blood cultures grew Actinomyces odontolyticus, and the abscess aspirate grew Streptococcus intermedius, supporting a mixed actinomycotic-pyogenic abscess rather than incidental bacterem

PURPOSE: Increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) released by NADPH oxidase and inflammation are associated with arterial hypertension and eye diseases associated with high blood pressure, including glaucoma, retinopathies (e.g., age-related macular degeneration), and choroidopathies affecting ocular function; however, the mechanisms underlying these adverse outcomes remain undefined. The present study was designed to highlight the importance of oxidative stress in severe hypertension-related eye damage.
METHODS: Male Wistar rats (n = 7, unless otherwise specified for specific experiments) wer

A healthy 65-year-old postmenopausal woman with a 15-year history of copper intrauterine device use presented to the emergency room with several days of lower abdominal pain and diarrhea. Laboratory testing revealed leukocytosis (white blood cell count, 26.15 × 103/µL) and elevated C-reactive protein (19.81 mg/dL). Contrast-enhanced computed tomography demonstrated multiple cystic and heterogeneous abdominopelvic lesions, including extension across the abdominal wall fascia and muscles, with involvement of the uterus and urinary bladder, raising suspicion for advanced gynecologic malignancy wi

Actinomycosis is a rare infection that can easily be confused with a neoplasm when it forms mass-like lesions. We report the case of a 21-year-old male patient who presented with dyspnea, cough, and stridor. Imaging studies revealed a tracheal mass obstructing the airway. Bronchoscopy confirmed the presence of the mass, and tissue samples were obtained for pathological examination. Histopathological examination revealed actinomycosis. Following treatment with ampicillin/sulbactam, surgical resection, and tracheostomy, the patient made a satisfactory recovery. This case highlights the importanc
