Pulmonary Actinomycosis is a rare clinical situation whose diagnosis is important but not always easy to make. It is a chronic infection caused by the anaerobic gram- positive filamentous bacterium Actinomyces. We present a case report of a 32 year-old man previously healthy with no co-morbidities, with fever, productive cough and chest pain, with radiological evidence of right superior lobar pneumonia. He began antibiotic therapy with amoxicillin/clavulanate, with good clinical and analytic response, but the radiological finding persisted. Thoracic computerized tomography revealed discretely

A 65-year-old asymptomatic man was admitted to our hospital because a chest abnormal shadow had been pointed out on a medical examination. Our investigation resulted that the consolidation in the left lung had been initially documented in 2002, and had been expanding every year. Bronchofiberscopy showed flare, swelling and stenosis of the left B8, B9 and B10. Because the biopsy specimen from the B9 showed a mass of bacteria and surrounding granulation tissue, pulmonary actinomycosis was diagnosed. Pulmonary actinomycosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of abnormal chest shad

Actinomycosis is an uncommon disease, which is usually manifested as cervicofacial infection and related to poor oral hygiene or compromised immune function. Pulmonary actinomycosis is rare, but its diagnosis is changing due to its variable presentation and the similarity in appearance to other intrapulmonary diseases. Here we report an 80-year-old man with a solitary pulmonary nodule over the left upper lobe. Pulmonary neoplasm was highly suspected in this patient and thus resection of the mass was undertaken through video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS). Histopathological examination demons

Actinomycosis is a bacterial infection due to Gram-positive bacteria of the Actinomyces genus. The authors describe two cases: one of them occurred in a woman with a clinical presentation of a right submandibular indurative mass. After surgery, histological examination showed a granulomatous tissue with many actinomycetes. The second case was observed in a man admitted to hospital with a diagnosis of pulmonary heteroplastic lesion. Also in this case, histological examination showed many actinomycotic colonies. Actinomycosis is an uncommon disease. Establishment of definite diagnosis requires a

The use of anti-tumour necrosis factor (TNF) agents has expanded significantly over the past few years, particularly for rheumatological diseases and Crohn's disease. A number of associated opportunistic infections have been observed as a result of suppression of T cell-mediated immunity, the most frequent being tuberculosis. We report the first case of pulmonary actinomycosis in a patient receiving regular infusions of infliximab, an anti-TNF agent, for Crohn's disease.

Actinomycosis is a rare condition which, in the thoracic localisation, can mimic cancer or tuberculosis. We report a series of three case of thoracic actinomycosis treated in the Ibn Sina University Thoracic Surgery Unit in Rabat, Morocco. CASE N degrees 1: This 45-year-old patient presented a tumefaction on the left anterior aspect of the chest. Physical examination identified a parietal mass with fistulisation to the skin. Radiography demonstrated a left pulmonary mass. Transparietal puncture led to the pathological diagnosis of actinomycosis. The patient was given medical treatment and impr

A 12-year old girl presented with an unusual problem of recurrent discharging multiple skin sinuses on her right anterior and posterior chest wall for a year. There was ipsilateral lower lobe pneumonia and imaging showed multiple abscesses in her lower back muscles bilaterally. A purulent fluid was aspirated from her back muscles and the histology examination showed sulphur granules with gram positive branched filaments. She responded well to the treatment for actinomycosis with penicillin and doxycycline.

INTRODUCTION: Actinomycosis is a suppurative infection caused by bacteria of the genus actinomyces. It is a rare cause of pulmonary infection and can be difficult to diagnose as its presentation may mimic cancer or tuberculosis. In the absence of treatment of pulmonary lesions fistulae can develop. We report a case of pulmonary actinomycosis complicated by a chest wall fistula that was managed by the thoracic surgery unit at Chu Ibn Sina de Rabat.
CASE REPORT: A 45 year old man who was previously fit and well presented with a left sided chest wall swelling with cutaneous fistulae. Pulmonary a

PURPOSE: To evaluate a case of orbital actinomycosis presenting as Tolosa-Hunt syndrome in a patient with a history of carcinomas of the kidney and breast.
METHODS: A woman with ingravescent painful ophthalmoplegia was brought to our observation. Brain and orbital and total body CT scans showed the presence of two orbital neoformations and a miliary pattern of dissemination in the lung. The initial diagnosis, which pointed to secondary localisations of the previous kidney and breast tumours, was changed to orbital and pulmonary actinomycosis following microbiological analysis of lung biopsy s

The patient was a 75-year-old male who consulted the department of respiratory tract internal medicine in our hospital for left chest pain occurring from the beginning of December 2003. Chest X-ray indicated a tumorous shadow in the left lower lung field. A chest CT also revealed an irregularly shaped mass shadow in the left lower lobe. Since bronchoscopy failed to establish a definitive diagnosis, the patient was referred to our department for surgery to undertake thoracotomy. After left pneumonectomy being performed based on a suspicion of lung abscess, pathological examination of specimen f

Plasma cell granuloma (PCG) of the lung is a rare disease that usually presents as a pulmonary nodule or mass on incidental radiographic examination without symptoms. Although the etiology of PCG is still controversial, many findings have lent support to the lesion being a reactive inflammatory process rather than a neoplastic one. We describe a 53-yr-old male who presented with a hemoptysis and have a lung mass at the left upper lobe on chest radiograph. The lung mass was primarily diagnosed as PCG by percutaneous needle aspiration and biopsy, and the patient was treated with oral steroid bec

A 51-year-old man complaining of cough and bloody sputum, was admitted to our hospital because of antibiotic-resistant chronic pneumonia in the right upper lobe. Initially, bronchoscopic examination and sputum culture revealed no evidence of malignancy or any specific infection, either pathologically or microbiologically. However, pathological examination of a solid body expectorated with sputum revealed typical sulfur granules, indicating pulmonary actinomycosis. Two actinomyceses named Actinomyces odontolyticus and Actinomyces meyeri were detected later. Pulmonary infection caused by these t

A clinical analysis of four patients diagnosed as pulmonary actinomycosis in our respiratory division during the last seven years was performed. All of the patients were males with an average age of 61 years. Three patients had a past history. The clinical diagnosis on admission was lung cancer or pulmonary suppuration in three patients showing a mass-like shadow and pneumonia in one patient with an infiltration shadow. Suspected pulmonary infectious disease was detected from clinical symptoms in two patients, while suspected lung cancer was detected in the other two patients during health exa

Actinomycosis is an uncommon disease in children and most cases are cervicofacial infections. To date, there have been only a few reports on children with chest wall involvement due to actinomycosis. Here we report a 9-year-old girl with a mass lesion in the chest wall mimicking Ewing's sarcoma of the rib. Thoracic actinomycosis without typical features of the disease is often evaluated with the suspicion of neoplasia. This rare entity should be considered in the differential diagnosis of mass lesions of the chest wall in children. The disease responds well to penicillin treatment.

We present a rare case of pulmonary actinomycosis complicated with massive hemoptysis. The patient was a 41-year-old male farmer, who had experienced prolonged fever and off-and-on blood streaked sputum for 2 years. He was admitted to our hospital because of 3 days of massive hemoptysis. He had no underlying medical illnesses, but was a heavy smoker and an alcoholic. The chest radiograph revealed patchy alveolar infiltration of the right upper lobe, mimicing tuberculosis. Massive hemoptysis was not controlled using conservative treatment and anti-tuberculous drugs. Emergency right upper lobe l

Although pulmonary artery aneurysms are a rare vascular anomaly, they are seen in a wide variety of conditions, such as congenital heart disease, infection, trauma, pulmonary hypertension, cystic medial necrosis and generalized vasculitis. To our knowledge, mycotic aneurysms caused by pulmonary actinomycosis have not been reported in the radiologic literature. Herein, a case of pulmonary actinomycosis complicated by mycotic aneurysm is presented. On CT scans, this case showed focal aneurysmal dilatation of a peripheral pulmonary artery within necrotizing pneumonia of the right lower lobe, whic
