Pulmonary Actinomycosis in a Patient with AIDS/HCV.

Pulmonary actinomycosis is a rare bacterial lung infection which is caused mainly by Actinomyces israelii. This non contagious infection can destroy parts of the lungs. There are variable presentations of pulmonary actinomycosis with similarity in manifestations to other infectious diseases of the lungs. Pulmonary actinomycosis is diagnosed by fine needle aspiration, bronchoscopy and finding of typical sulfur granules. We present a case of pulmonary actinomycosis in a middle aged (AIDS/HCV) man with massive hemoptysis and progressive dyspnoea. The bronchoscopy findings showed endobronchial mas

A case of relapsed lung abscess caused by Eubacterium brachy infection following an initial diagnosis of pulmonary actinomycosis.

We report a rare case of lung abscess due to Eubacterium brachy. In this case, an analysis of the aspirate from frank pus revealed Gram-positive coccobacilli. We initially strongly suspected lung abscess associated with actinomycosis because of the chronic/recurrent clinical course and radio-pathological findings such as a granuloma lesion. Although a biochemical analysis revealed Actinomyces sp., 16S rRNA gene sequencing and a phylogenetic tree analysis of the isolated strain confirmed the presence of E. brachy. Some cases previously diagnosed as actinomycosis might be correctly diagnosed as

Pulmonary actinomycosis masquerading as lung cancer: A case report.

Pulmonary actinomycosis is a rare yet important and challenging diagnosis to make. It is commonly confused with other lung diseases, such as tuberculosis and bronchogenic carcinoma, leading to delay diagnosis or misdiagnosis. A 49-year-old man presented with a chronic cough, hemoptysis, and pleuritic chest pain. His initial imaging studies including computed tomography (CT) was suggestive of bronchogenic carcinoma. A subsequent CTguided biopsy was consistent with pulmonary actinomycosis and excluded the possibility of bronchogenic carcinoma. He was treated with antibiotic therapy and achieved

Pulmonary actinomycosis - the great imitator.

Pulmonary localisation represents only 15% of all cases of actinomycosis. The clinical symptoms and radiological changes of this disease are non-specific and sometimes it can be misdiagnosed, usually as tuberculosis, lung cancer or lung abscess. In the reported case, what might look like the lung cancer, finally turned out to be actinomycosis. The interesting case is presented of lung actinomycosis in a 77-year-old farmer, admitted to the Department of Pneumonology, Oncology and Allegology in Lublin due to a massive haemoptysis. CT scan of the chest showed, apart from other changes, the spicul

Pulmonary actinomycosis presenting as post-obstructive pneumonia.

Actinomycosis is a chronic suppurative infection caused by filamentous Gram-positive bacilli, leading to a purulent discharge due to sulfur granule formation. Thoracic actinomycosis represents around 20% of Actinomyces infections, with endobronchial involvement being fairly uncommon. Pulmonary actinomycosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of non-resolving lobar pneumonia or a lobar mass suspicious for malignancy on endobronchial biopsy. A case of endobronchial actinomycosis presenting as post-obstructive pneumonia and mimicking right upper lobe endobronchial carcinoma, which

Empyema necessitans caused by actinomycosis: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary actinomycosis is an uncommon clinical entity that the practicing thoracic surgeon rarely encounters. Empyema necessitans represents an even less common presentation of this pathology, and the often indolent disease course leads to early misdiagnosis in many cases. Familiarity with the varied presentations and possible operative strategies is essential to obtaining successful outcomes. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 56-year-old male presented with swelling and pain over the lateral chest wall. Initial imaging studies demonstrated a mass concerning for infection vs. neoplasia.

[Pulmonary actinomycosis and tuberculosis. A comorbidity pediatric case].

UNLABELLED: Actinomycosis is a chronic suppurative infection, produced by anaerobic Gram-positive bacteria or microaerobic Actinomyces species. It is rare in children and adolescents and it is more common in immunocompromised. Mycobacterium tuberculosis collaborates on the development of the disease. Pulmonary involvement appears as a picture of chronic condensation that does not improve with conventional antibiotic treatment. Classic complications affecting the thoracic wall with drainage in «sulfur granule» and fistulization are described less frequently nowadays. The diagnosis is a real cha

Profile of illness in Syrian refugees: A GeoSentinel analysis, 2013 to 2015.

OBJECTIVE: Pulmonary actinomycosis is a rare and chronic infectious disease that mimics malignancy and is frequently misdiagnosed. There are few reports that address the clinical characteristics of pulmonary actinomycosis. The objective of this research is to evaluate the clinical features, radiological findings, diagnostic approaches and treatment outcomes of pulmonary actinomycosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty-seven patients with pulmonary actinomycosis histopathologically diagnosed from 2009 to 2021 were analyzed retrospectively. RESULTS: The mean age at presentation was 53.7 (±13.3) yea

A Retrospective Study of Pulmonary Actinomycosis in a Single Institution in China.

BACKGROUND: Actinomycosis is a rare indolent infectious disease caused by Actinomyces. Although pulmonary actinomycosis is thought to be more prevalent in developing countries, data from developing countries are scanty. This study was to reveal the current situation of pulmonary actinomycosis in developing countries and the difference from that in developed countries. METHODS: Patients fulfilling the inclusion criteria for pulmonary actinomycosis from Peking Union Medical College Hospital in China between January 2003 and December 2014 were retrospectively analyzed. Baseline characteristics,

Primary Bronchopulmonary Actinomycosis Masquerading as Lung Cancer: Apropos of Two Cases and Literature Review.

Actinomycosis is a rare and slowly progressive infectious disease that can affect a variety of organ systems including the lung. It is caused by filamentous Gram-positive anaerobic bacteria of the genus Actinomyces. Despite its rarity, pulmonary actinomycosis can involve lung parenchyma, bronchial structures, and chest wall. The disease can mimic lung malignancy given its nonspecific clinical and radiological presentation, thus posing a diagnostic dilemma to the attending physician. In this paper, we describe two patients with pulmonary actinomycosis mimicking bronchogenic carcinoma; the forme

A Case of Pulmonary Actinomycosis Associated With Aspiration of Cedar Leaves.

The aspiration of foreign bodies may induce various infectious diseases, including actinomycosis, and its association with foreign bodies has been reported. We encountered a patient who developed Actinomyces-induced lung abscess associated with aspiration of cedar leaves. The patient was a 56-year-old Japanese woman who aspirated decorative cedar leaves contained in a lunch box while eating a meal, and coughing and bloody phlegm occurred thereafter. A mass was noted in the right lower lobe of the lung on plain chest computed tomography on the first consultation, and granules of Actinomyces wer

[Postoperatively Diagnosed Pulmonary Actinomycosis;Report of Three Cases].

Three cases of pulmonary actinomycosis have been postoperatively diagnosed in our hospital in the past 3 years. All the cases were preoperatively difficult to differentiate from lung cancer, and all were diagnosed in men. One of the patients was diagnosed on the basis of clinical symptoms, while the other 2 patients were diagnosed during the treatment and follow-up of other diseases. On radiological examination, 2 patients showed mass-like shadows, and the 3rd showed a cavitary lesion; fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) -positron emission tomography showed high FDG accumulation in all the patients. Pulmonary Actinomycosis Imitating Lung Cancer on (18)F-FDG PET/CT: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Here we report a case of 41-year-old man with a soft tissue density mass at right upper lung and palpable abscesses at right upper backside and right wrist. (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography demonstrated a 7.8 × 5.0 cm mass with soft-tissue density in the upper lobe of the right lung with high metabolic activity. The infiltrative mass extended to adjacent chest wall soft tissue. Final diagnosis of pulmonary actinomycosis with multiple abscesses was made. The patient responded well to antibiotics treatment.

An Unusual Cause of a Pulmonary Mass: Actinomycosis.

We present the case of a 62-year-old male with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and poorly controlled diabetes mellitus who presented with haemoptysis. A radiograph of the chest showed a right lower parahilar opacity which on the contrast enhanced computed tomography was seen to be an irregular, spiculated mass localised to the middle lobe. Considering malignancy as the most probable diagnosis, a bronchoscopic endobronchial biopsy was performed which surprisingly established pulmonary actinomycosis as the diagnosis. The patient was successfully managed with amoxicillin and clavulanic acid

[Disseminated pulmonary actinomycosis - an unusual presentation].

Actinomycosis is a rare, chronic infectious disease caused by anaerobic Gram-positive bacteria Actinomyces spp. They induces suppurative inflammation in tissues. They live as commensals in the oropharynx, interstitial tract and genital mucosa, causing almost exclusively endogenic infections. Beacause variable clinical course, its chronicity, quite often actinomycosis mimics rather neoplasmatic disease than infection. We present the case of 56-year old male with unusual pulmonary actinomycosis manifestation as bilateral disseminated lung nodules with systemic symptoms, after initial antitubercu

Multivariate analysis of prognostic factors in patients with pulmonary actinomycosis.

BACKGROUND: There have been few studies of pulmonary actinomycosis, which is an uncommon anaerobic infection. Consequently, the optimal therapeutic regimen, appropriate duration of treatment, long-term prognosis, and factors predicting prognosis are not well established. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of histopathologically confirmed cases of pulmonary actinomycosis seen between November 2003 and December 2012. RESULTS: The study included 68 patients with a mean age of 58.4 ± 11.6 years. Of the 68, initial surgery was performed in 15 patients (22.1%), while the rema
