Actinomycosis is a chronic suppurative bacterial infection caused by Actinomyces species. Actinomyces israelii is the organism most commonly found in human disease. Actinomycosis usually manifests with abscess formation, dense fibrosis, and draining sinuses. The disease is further characterized by the tendency to extensively spread beyond normal fascial and connective tissue planes. Actinomycosis occurs most commonly in the cervicofacial region (50%-65%), followed by the thoracic (15%-30%) and abdominopelvic (20%) regions, but rarely involves the central nervous system. Most cases of cervicofa

Actinomycosis is a rare chronic disease caused by Actinomyces spp., anaerobic Gram-positive bacteria that normally colonize the human mouth and digestive and genital tracts. Physicians must be aware of typical clinical presentations (such as cervicofacial actinomycosis following dental focus of infection, pelvic actinomycosis in women with an intrauterine device, and pulmonary actinomycosis in smokers with poor dental hygiene), but also that actinomycosis may mimic the malignancy process in various anatomical sites. Bacterial cultures and pathology are the cornerstone of diagnosis, but particu

A 35-year-old man was referred to our hospital, because of recurrent pneumonia. His chest X-ray film and computed tomography showed mass-like consolidation with a cavity in the right upper lobe. He underwent a bronchoscopic examination, but no diagnosis was established. Therefore a surgical biopsy was performed, but the pathological findings revealed that it was only an inflammatory change without any malignant component. For a while, antibiotic and the steroid treatment was continued resulting in the aggravation of clinical findings. Finally, an upper lobe excision was performed for the compl

Pulmonary actinomycosis is a rare chronic pulmonary infection caused by actinomyces, a Gram-positive, microaerophilic bacterium. Pulmonary involvement other than cervicofacial or abdominopelvic actinomycosis is uncommon and often leads to a misdiagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis or lung cancer. Endobronchial involvement is very rare in pulmonary actinomycosis. Here in, we describe the case of a 66-year-old male patient, referred with a history of massive hemoptysis since a few weeks ago. Plain chest radiograph and computerized tomographic scan revealed a dens consolidation in the right upper l

We present a patient with advanced Hodgkin's disease treated with escalated BEACOPP chemotherapy. The result from the interim fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography with CT (PET-CT) after two cycles of chemotherapy is crucial for treatment guidance for the clinical trial HD18 from the German Hodgkin Study Group. An increase in size and standard uptake value (SUV) of a pulmonary lesion suggesting refractory Hodgkin's disease was documented. Since all other manifestations of the lymphoma responded well to the treatment, the discordant behaviour was suspicious for another reason for this

Pulmonary actinomycosis is a rare disease that is often misdiagnosed as tuberculosis or lung cancer. Actinomyces graevenitzii is a relatively new recognized Actinomyces species isolated from various clinical samples. The authors report a case of pulmonary actinomycosis caused by A graevenitzii. A computed tomography examination revealed an excavated consolidation in the middle right lobe of a previously healthy young man who presented with a long history of moderate cough. Cultures of the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid confirmed the diagnosis of pulmonary abscess caused by A gravenitzii. At the

A 51-year-old woman visited our hospital with massive hemoptysis. She had suffered from recurrent hemoptysis for five years and had undergone bronchial artery embolization many times. The patient had a history of pulmonary tuberculosis and bronchiectasis. Chest radiography showed consolidation around the nodule in the lateral basal segment of the right lower lobe. We successfully performed a right lower lobectomy. The histological study of the resected specimen showed a vegetable foreign body and clumps of Actinomyces, indicating actinomycosis, which was suggested to be the cause of the hemopt

Actinomyces meyeri is rarely isolated in cases of actinomycosis. The identification of A. meyeri had historically been difficult and unreliable. With the recent development of 16S ribosomal RNA (16S rRNA) sequencing, Actinomyces species such as A. meyeri can be isolated much more reliably. A. meyeri often causes disseminated disease, which can be secondary to frequent pulmonary infections. A penicillin-based regimen is the mainstay of A. meyeri treatment, with a prolonged course usually required. Here, we report a case of pulmonary actinomycosis with brain abscess caused by A. meyeri that was

INTRODUCTION: Actinomycosis is a suppurative infection caused by bacteria of the Actinomyces genus. It is a rare cause of pulmonary infection and can be difficult to diagnose because its presentation may mimic tuberculosis or cancer. In the absence of treatment of pulmonary lesions fistulae can develop. We report a case of thoracic actinomycosis with chest wall involvement in a child, managed in the pediatric department at Moulay Youssef University Hospital in Rabat, Morocco.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 13-year-old boy with a history of trauma to the right chest 1 year earlier, admit

Actinomycosis is a chronic granulomatous disease caused by Gram-positive anaerobic bacteria of the genus Actinomyces. Pulmonary actinomycosis is a rare infection in children, and its extension into the chest wall is infrequently reported. We report a case of pulmonary actinomycosis in a 14-year-old girl of Mapuche descent who presented with chronic respiratory symptoms and multiple discharging skin sinuses on her right lower chest wall. The diagnosis was made by skin biopsy, which showed sulfur granules with actinomyces colonies. She was successfully treated with intravenous ceftriaxone and pe

UNLABELLED: Actinomycosis of the spine with spinal cord compression is rare. Only 22 cases are reported in the literature. The authors describe a remarkable case of a large lesion leading to bony destruction and spinal cord compression in the cervicothoracic junction with a large intrathoracic extension, which was considered to be a metastatic pulmonary disease but turned out to be actinomycosis.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 55-year-old man presented with acute tetraparesis. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) imaging showed vertebral body collapse of T1 and partially C7

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary actinomycosis is a chronic pulmonary infection caused by Actinomyces. Both improving oral hygiene and early application of antibiotics to the case of suspicious pulmonary infections result in changes in incidences and presentations of pulmonary actinomycosis. However, there are little reports dealt with the recent clinical characteristics of pulmonary actinomycosis. This study aimed to review the characteristics of pulmonary actinomycosis occurred during the first decade of 21st century.
METHODS: This retrospective study was performed on 94 subjects with pulmonary actino

We report a case of broncholithiasis secondary to pulmonary actinomycosis. Broncholithiasis has occasionally been reported in association with actinomycosis, but it is unclear if actinomycosis leads to lymph node calcification with subsequent erosion into the airway, producing a broncholith, or if an existing generic broncholith is secondarily colonized with Actinomyces. The patient had post-obstruction pneumonia, and computed tomography showed calcified nodules obstructing the bronchus intermedius and distal necrotizing pneumonia. The nodules included sulfur granules containing Gram-positive

Pulmonary actinomycosis is a rare disease frequently misdiagnosed, even by experienced clinicians, as primary or metastatic lung cancer or as other more conventional lung infections. It is often an unexpected disease that is basically detected only on cytological⁄histological examination. A case involving a patient who presented with a mass in the bronchial stump (of a previous pulmonary lobectomy) is described. Despite a strong suspicion of recurrent lung cancer, positron emission tomography confirmed a diagnosis of a suture-related bronchial actinomycosis.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary infections occasionally present with infectious pseudotumour of the lung not easily distinguishable from true pulmonary neoplasm. In such cases, radiographic findings and clinical manifestation are highly suggestive of lung cancer. These inflammatory lung lesions cause significant diagnostic problems and appropriate therapy is often considerably delayed. We therefore report on our experience with infectious pseudotumour of the lung caused by bacterial, mycobacterial and fungal pulmonary infections.
METHODS: In a retrospective case series, patients with lung infections si

Pulmonary actinomycosis is a rare disease caused by Actinomyces sp. Its symptoms and radiological findings are not characteristic, so the diagnosis might be difficult to establish. We report a case of a 59 year old male, who developed bronchopulmonary Actinomycosis due to poor dental hygiene. The infectious process affected lung parenchyma and infiltrated chest wall causing multifocal sternal osteolisis and multiple cutaneous fistulas. The radiological findings sugested neoplasmatical process. The diagnosis was based on histopatological findings of fistular scrapes. The material contained Acti

Actinomycosis is a rare, chronic, suppurative, granulomatous infection caused by a group of gram-positive anaerobic bacteria belonging to the natural flora of the oral cavity and gastrointestinal and urogenital tracts. It may involve several organs. This case study refers to pulmonary actinomycosis with chest wall involvement and cord compression in a 29-year-old male who presented with fever, cough, hemoptysis, neck pain, and paresis and plegia of the lower limbs of 5-month duration.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary actinomycosis may create a diagnostic and therapeutic dilemma especially in cancer patients.
CASE REPORT: A 64-year-old male patient presented with a productive cough, bloody sputum, and weight loss. Thoracic computed tomography (CT) showed a 5-cm mass in the upper lobe of the right lung, and a 2-cm mass in the lower lobe of the left lung. Bronchoscopic examination did not show any endobronchial lesions. CT-guided needle biopsy of the right pulmonary lesion showed lung adenocarcinoma. Wholebody positron emission tomography/CT revealed an increase in fluorodeoxyglucose ac
